  1. The GCD and Overstreet say nothing about the contents of Rex Dexter, other than listing the characters. The Keltner index lists four Rex Dexter stories in RD and three of them are reprints (6 pages each). I am assuming that issues 2-4 of Mystery Men were the source. But it could have been any of the first 6 issues. Do you know what the story line was for each of the short stories? Keltner must have had all of these issues at one time. He didn't just collect MLJ. bb
  2. I own that comic and I never noticed that page. BZ, Can you confirm that the Briefer story in Rex Dexter is the same as the Mystery Men #4 story? I just noticed that someone (RyanH) posted a photo of the RD comic which had a familiar story. bb
  3. I was wondering whether the Rex Dexter spread was from the comic or is from Mystery Men 4. If it is from Rex Dexter then it should be listed as a reprint from Mystery Men. Can anyone confirm? bb
  4. My Fast Action collection is only good at best but the Big Big books scan well. Tracy (and others) scans are below. bb
  5. BB, you've outdone yourself. I tried to convince my wife that I was collecting comics because of the investment potential. I don't think she bought it. I will probably see that model as exhibit A in divorce court. bb
  6. I found this interesting page in Mystery Men 14 And if you find you have too much free time, then you can assemble one of these models from the same issue. bb I still need to seal up some cracks and attach the Tesla receiving antenna but then "All Civilized Planets Will Be Destroyed".
  7. BZ, I thought I had a lot of Tracy but you seem to have gotten the bug. My collection is from Wally who also purchased Popular comics. I added the Big Big and Fast Action books. I still have most of the Tracy books but not all of the first 20 issues. Did you show all of the Four Color Tracy books too. I have a few of those. bb
  8. BZ, Thanks for posting the Tracy. I am sorry I missed the quiz (I don't think I would have gotten the first three or four clues but the last one was pretty good). I kind of enjoy collecting Tracy, Crime Does Not Pay, etc. I don't know what Wertham had against crime comics. They were action packed and gave equal opportunity for both genders. bb
  9. This is one of the artist proofs for Four Color 147. A nice thing to have if you can't get the original. bb
  10. And it looks like when they are through with the rubber band and the garden tool, they are going to have a pillow fight! I admit that the covers weren't as gruesome as Crime Does Not Pay but there was a string of Harvey issues where someone was getting shot on the cover with bullets (not just paper clips).
  11. BZ, I think Gutman's department store must have given away comics in 1937 or 1938 as part of a Toy Store promotion. When I checked the history of the store in Baltimore, I found information about someone who hated working there but did very well in the stock market. bb
  12. Bringing Up Father was very popular in the twenties. Cupples and Leon published 26 issues of the platinum age comic and two Big Books. I suspect that Barks read the work. A lot of the humor seems similar. I noticed a lot of background figures in the paintings that reminded me of Gyro Gearloose's helper. But someone else could be responsible for all of that too. The style reminds me of Farr who probably was influenced by McManus (or vice-versa). Scan below is from the 1926 Big Book 1 which reprinted strips from 1919. bb
  13. I think the cigar and the dapper dress makes McManus remind me of Jiggs.
  14. I found this in the Harvey edition of Jiggs and Maggie. bb
  15. While searching through my stack of Sunday pages, I found this Superman page that made me a little sad. From June 10, 1951 which brought back memories of 9/11. bb
  16. I agree. As Maurice Horn noted in his entry for this strip in The World Encyclopedia of Comics: The luxurious setting of the action, an astounding mixture of rococo architecture, Art Nouveau furnishings and weird shaped curios form the backdrop for this battle of the sexes. And speaking of the sexes, he never shied from drawing the kinder gentler sex under its best light. One strip will stretch your screen, sorry - McManus also did the Snookums strip at the top of each page. His work became more ornate with the years. I have a magazine article which featured him on the cover. He looked a lot like his famous Jiggs character. bb
  17. The covers of the Harvey issues were a little more violent sometimes. Tracy kicked the ladder in the story to get Big Shoulders down in a hurry. bb
  18. I have a few more Feature Books that are worth showing. I would like to have all listed in the ad from FB 9 but unfortunately I don't. bb
  19. Love that Dragon cover BZ. Thanks for the Quiz update. I will expect my six "no prizes" in the mail soon. :banana:bb A Spaceman 6 cover to celebrate my sixth win. I can't figure out what the Thing looks like other than green pasta. YUM!
  20. I don't know who Robie is, but I'd like to have his collection. Dave Robie advertises in the Overstreet guide and is one of the advisors. Most of the stuff I saw was for sale although I think he is happy to keep the books. bb
  21. And speaking of Tracy, he had some pretty good stories in Large Feature Book 8. and he starts the story with a bang. and sometimes the inside front cover had some nice ads. bb I saw a collection owned by Robie this weekend which had most of the Fast Action books, and most of the Pop up books too, in nice shape. I was very envious.
  22. Smilin' Jack is kind of a Clark Gable character. He was very popular and in Popular and Large Feature Comics 25. bb
  23. Good Work Scrooge!! Either you don't sleep or you are visiting the west coast. I missed that quiz entirely (sleeping) but it looks like I wouldn't have got the answer from the first two clues. I would like to get a couple of Slam Bang issues but all I have found is a few bad Fiche scans. bb
