  1. The contest will be finished before the books ship from CGC, meaning the submitter won’t know the grades yet. We’ll organize this to where there is no delay in their order due to their books being used.
  2. We're not going to reveal the source but, we will be getting permission from the Submitter(s).
  3. I wouldn't be in favor of adding any that could widely be used to troll but, would consider a +1 or smile emoji. Leaning heavy towards a +1 I think that emojis only replace posts that include a quote with a laugh, thumbs up or similar emoji reply. If someone truly has something to add, they will post.
  4. Someone has brought up adding a few more reaction emojis. What do you guys think? Here is what was posted. We currently have the five basic 'default' reaction options provided by Invision, the forum software supplier: Like Thanks Confused Sad Haha There are some interesting discussions about their use on the Invision site, and many users of the software on other forums have requested additional ones. One that caught my eye was the 'plus one' option - here is what it looks like in use: Historically, I haven't been a fan of the reactions system but they are firmly embedded now and I don't see that changing. So the next best thing would be to update them, and perhaps tailor them better to our users needs. I would like to see a basic smiley face myself. When someone makes a post that makes me smile, I sometimes feel that the laugh is too much, but the standard 'like' fails to adequately covey my feelings. I know, I really did just post that. Anyway, maybe you could canvass opinion on this, as you have done the emojis? That seemed to get members engaged and freshened things up a bit. Here are some of the options I saw on the Invision site:
  5. I can't make a decision if they will be an alternate first place prize, in case the winner doesn't submit books but, I will discuss that with management.
  6. Hey all: I have posted this in comics general but, I thought I would share here, too. Matt Nelson and I have been discussing the possibilities of CGC hosting some grading contests. These contests will most likely start in January. Here is CGC’s proposed grading contest. The scoring format has been used by CGC over the past several years to test convention attendees and dealers, as well as CGC graders in-house. The contest will take place four times a year. Images of the front and back of 15 books will be posted on the boards to begin the contest. Each participant will PM all 15 grades at once to Mike. Participants have one week to PM their grades before the contest closes. The final grades and individual/collective results will be posted the following week. The lower the score, the higher the ranking. Nailing the grade equals 0 points; each grade off in either direction adds a point. Example: guessing a 7.5 or 9.6 on a 9.0 garners 3 points. Those who place in the top ten will immediately participate in a second grading round, grading five additional books for final ranking and prizes. CGC was planning on offering a very nice grand prize, that will most likely be grading credit. If other prizes are donated by contestants, they would be divided up by 2nd through 5th place. The dividing of the donated prizes between 2nd through 5th place isn't etched in stone yet. We are open to opinions on how to divide up these prizes. Would you prefer that we do: 1 contest with Modern age books, 1 with copper age books, 1 with silver age books and 1 with golden age books, or have each grading contest contain mixed aged books?
  7. I started a thread about future grading contests, hosted by CGC.

  12. Some of these are a little heavy on the mischief side.
  13. Thank you for your post. You make some very good points. I agree that heavy handed moderation is not the way to go. Just before I became "official", I started posting missing rules in most of the FS threads, and allowed people 24 hours to make changes. I also marked most of the reports complete vs taking action. I have also communicated will multiple board members privately, to help them understand ways to avoid moderator action. The ones that listened saw a huge change for the better regarding posting restrictions. Also, some people that were in conflict have resolved their differences. Another thing I do is make a post in the thread where an argument is occurring, vs issuing warnings. In the past, many things were marked under review, and left for an admin, who would show up once a week for an hour. That led to a lot of warnings, and set a precedent for future moderation action. Since, I have took over and am here full time, I have taken a different approach. I first reached out to the admin towards the end of September, saying I would be taking over soon, and explained my new direction. So, that person basically stopped then. Yesterday, I was looking at 2 graphs. The 1st graph shows the warnings, and the second shows reported content. Note the downhill trend.

  15. Someone would have to provide me an appropriate size rocket. I was not able to resize it.
  16. We are still working out the details. I expect they will start soon after the holidays are over.
