  1. Hariri's second purchased Action 1 9.0 (sold by Adams) makes me say Hmmmmmm. Spine splits top and bottom. Piece almost falling out on bottom of spine. Divot on interior pages that looks like it extends through the book.
  2. Funny thing is, I've seen certain pulps graded for years. There's four copies of the LB Cole cover pulp "A How-To Book" issue 7 ("Complete How-To Book of Space") on the census.
  3. The other 8.0 is the Larson. The other 8.5 is this: It sold for a bit over $2M in 2018. Resold in 2021 for $3.25 million. Which 8.5 is better? I guess we're going to see how big an impact the Pandemic had on perceptions of value.
  4. My favorite quests are for comics that are so rare you are lucky to see one in a collecting career and owning two is unthinkable. But like everyone else I end up with dupes. Most of the time when I have dupes its just temporary while in the process of upgrading or downgrading (I do both) or picking up multiples of an undervalued comics for short term resale to fund stuff for the core collection. But lately I have found myself liking certain obtainable books enough to pick up multiple copies. Usually its because the books have a cool cover. Lately I've also gotten into covers by great comic artists that you can't find in the U.S.: GA Swedish innuendo (it just looks wrong); GA awesome Australian Hal Foster covers (unbelievably cool - why wasn't there a GA Prince Valiant with Foster art? Puts most everyone else to shame); GA Barks cover for one of his best stories only seen in Italy (who knew?). And sometimes its because I'm looking for comics off the beaten path (don't mock my desire for less seen Silver/Bronze/Copper comics!) and it turns out you find more copies than you expected: Iron Giant Preview Variant Cover (yeah that fits into my nostalgia) and Dennis the Menace and the Bible Kids 10 (only 1 copy of either on Census). As long as you make it interesting for yourself, it's all good.
  5. BREAKING - SELLER JUST EMAILED ME AS FOLLOWS! As I speculated above, Seller says this was a CGC reholdering issue - not nefarious by seller. Hello and thanks for the note. I just pulled the book out and it appears that top right corner got folded down as it's not missing, but just folded over. I'm guessing CGC may have done this when the book got re-holdered, but no way to confirm at this point. Let me know if you have any other questions.
  6. Except there is no color breaking or texture inducing creasing on that WDC&S 69 cover. On the other hand, this Star Spangled 65 has some texture inducing defects (for example above Robin's head) which are much worse. Is it too much to ask for consistency? I'm not comparing a 1947 book to a 1977 or 1997 book, I'm comparing 1947 to 1946:
  7. I know CGC doesn't guarantee the grades, but when I see that 1947 Star Spangled 65 getting an 8.0 with that piece missing, and this WDC&S 69 from a year earlier is getting raped for a 7.0 (white) grade, it makes me more than a little disappointed:
  8. My thought too. I searched the eBay pictures for evidence of the chip in the holder and I didn't see any. I also don't think that chip could have happened in the holder. So that begs the most likely scenario would seem to be that CGC damaged the book during the re-holdering period and either missed it or gave it a pass. I don't think the seller subbed the book out. This looks like a CGC issue and the Seller is just letting buyers decide if they are buying a book or a holder.
  9. To my eyes, the pattern of foxing/discoloration along the right side make it look like the same book. But I don't understand how the piece in the upper right corner disappeared and why that did not impact the grade when re-holdered. Maybe CGC damaged it and kept the same grade? It's a mystery to me.
  10. Star Spangled Comics 65 CGC 8.0 No. 0754144011 offered on eBay right now by Collector's Fix: Star Spangled Comics 65 CGC 8.0 No. 0754144011 sold on ComicLink on 5/31/2023 9:32:20 PM: Same book now damaged or different books? Appears to have been re-holdered. Maybe damaged then with no change in grade? Doesn't look like it is still a CGC 8.0. But maybe I'm missing something. Anyone from @CGC Comics want to offer their thoughts? I'm actively in the market for a nice copy of this comic.
  11. Great show. Helped several dealers make money on pulps & comics, also picked up a pulp and some books from Bud Plant, a CBM and some other issues from Gary Carter, and delivered a book I sold to a fellow collector who was also at the show. Enjoyed seeing some other guys. Best thing of all, Bud told me that a book I missed buying the first time around is now selling for many multiples of cover price is being reprinted. I was prepared to pay what it took if he had one, but it turned out my timing is good and I'll be saving a lot. Was a full room with some impressive books that are rarely seen, especially deep on hard to find UK books (from more than one seller - who can say why?). Heard a rumor about a More Fun 14, but didn't see it. I assume it got bought. Would have liked to known the price. If it didn't sell, someone want to PM me the seller and price? Thanks.
  12. CGC isn't perfect in a lot of ways. So, yes, I agree they make mistakes. But if you are selling a book that CGC said had color touch, and you know that because you deslabbed it, why not just tell buyers the facts: CGC identified the book as having CT but you haven't found any, so you think CGC made one of their mistakes (its well known they aren't perfect). That way the buyer can take a look for CT instead of being in the position of having to trust your opinion - which could be wrong.
  13. First scene censored by the Hays Code from Tarzan and His Mate:
  14. Dave Wigransky's take on an anti-Wertham strip from 1948. Wertham would have loved it -- to use against delinquents like Dave: See here for a great article on the above: https://library.osu.edu/site/cartoons/2016/02/23/guest-post-found-in-the-collection-the-uncanny-adventures-of-i-hate-dr-wertham/
  15. Which is why parents need to pay attention. But censorship? Not necessary.
  16. Looking forward to this show! Last one I went to (October?) was high quality. If anyone has any interest in a comic rack, let me know and I can bring it to the show (buy / possibly trade) just shoot me a PM and we can talk value and logistics. I can be there early if you want to use it in your booth! I tried to sell the below rack when stored in Oregon on the Boards, but shipping costs were prohibitive. I've since brought it to SF so this is a strictly a SF Bay Area item now: Also would be willing to unload this one: But only for folks in SF Bay Area or at the show.
  17. There is always more to find and no doubt he is looking! What a great collection!
  18. Great story. I went to that exhibit at the U of Oregon art museum. It was quite good as was the art of superhero exhibit as both featured really peak OA. I have the exhibit pamphlets and will post one tomorrow. I also had no knowledge of Roger Hill but I am sorry for that gap in my education and quit pleased to fix it now.
  19. John Prentice? Wow. Didn't know he did comic covers. I only know him as a newspaper cartoonist (took over Rip Kirby when Alex Raymond died).
  20. In answer to the thread title question: The one romance comic I'm looking for. Seriously. I've been looking for years. Here's what I've discovered: You can find lots of LB Cole and Matt Baker, that market appears to be thriving, and Toth books also are on the market, as are DCs, Atlas, and especially Harvey ("file" copies). But a lot of "lesser" Romance books and publishers seem incredibly hard to find. An obvious exception are warehouse finds like Charlton's True Life Secrets 23 for which it seems you can't swing a stick without hitting one. But, for example, other Charlton books never hit the market. Makes the romance area a bit frustrating. Much harder than PCH. Maybe the hardest genre to locate a book? I think so.
