I don’t have enough experience to give a numerical grade, but those scratches on the back are really going to hurt your surface sub-grade.

Since my original post, I found some YouTube videos analyzing raw cards for grading and after watching them, I’m pretty sure none of my cards are worth grading, so I will just sell them raw.

There is also a significant surface flaw on the front as shown below.

  2. So I am a total noob at trading card grading I am looking to sell some of my vintage Magic cards. Some have never been played and some very lightly played. Based on checking eBay sales data, it looks like getting the cards graded is only worth it if they come back 9.0 or better.

if anyone can give me a sense of what my Serendib Efreet should expect to get, that would be very helpful. It shows a couple minor dings but otherwise great condition imo.

  3. I think I'm going to send it back to be fixed because it's noticeable enough that it would (and does) bother me, so it would probably bother anyone who bought it.

The more I think about it, the more I think it would be B.S. if the comic got damaged while CGC was fixing a mechanical error that was their fault to begin with and they refused to do anything about it. Knock on wood that it doesn't come to that, though.

  4. Hey all-

I just got back my ASM 300. It came back a 9.0. I noticed it has some scuff marks on the inside of the case on the front and back. The ones on the front are not very noticeable but the ones on the back are. I notified CGC and they said I could send it back as a mechanical error and they would put it in a new holder.

I was going through that process and they make you sign a waiver agreeing that it is possible that the comic will be damaged in the process and they are not responsible.

I assume it’s very rare for that to happen and that most people would take the risk and send it back but I figured it was worth a post here to check with you all to see what others would do in this situation.

My plan is to sell the comic, not keep it for my personal collection/display. So I’m really just concerned with max return on investment.

Here are picks of the scuffs. It’s hard to get them to show up in a picture but I did my best. They look worse in real life, but only the ones on the back are really noticeable:

I agree with the 9.0 based on what I see

I also understand CGC modern graders are not as consistent as they should be. Hasn’t affected me personally as most books I have received back I understand the grades given but I certainly know that in hiring new modern graders in the last year, the consistency on 1980-now books has gotten a little wild. I’m personally sticking to pre 1975 books until they get a few years experience under their belt (the new modern graders that is)

Other than the fact that I had (what I thought were) two 9.8 candidates that both came back 9.6 (Iron Man 292 & ASM 361), I am pretty happy with all of the grades I got (now that I see the fingerprint issue on this book).

I only collected comics for about 3 years from 90-92. In this round I submitted all of my most valuable comics. I was thinking about submitting a second round where I comb through my collection for 9.8 candidates even if they are less valuable. Maybe by the time those comics go through the 6+ month waiting list for pressing, the grading will be more consistent....

The almost complete lack of oversight across the boards leaves the only answer that there are too many people working there now that are deficient in the skills required to do the job.

Only way to reduce turnaround time was to hire more people which means there are a bunch of new people with less experience. Hopefully they get better?

  7. This is my first time submitting books to CGC. I submitted 9 books total and have gotten 8 grades back so far. Most of the grades made sense to me generally. I was hoping for at least one 9.8 but didn’t get one.

The one book I was surprised didn’t do better was my copy of Wolverine #1. It received a 9.0 WHITE — No grader notes.

Below are the pics I took before I submitted them to CFP for pressing. I don’t have it back yet so let’s just assume for now that the book did not get damaged somewhere along the way.

I do not claim to be an expert but I was very surprised this didn’t get at least a 9.2 and maybe a 9.4. It has a very small color breaking crease on the back cover, bottom left corner, but a 9.0 feels harsh to me. Thoughts?

  8. This is my first CGC submission so I'm probably way too excited/anxious about it because I'm almost constantly refreshing the status of my submission to get any update immediately.

I have one submission that is a group of 2 books I submitted to the Modern tier. As of last week it was in the "Grading/Encapsulating/Imaging" status. This morning I saw that it had moved to "Quality Control/Finalized". Then less than an hour later I refreshed again and it had changed to "Grading/Quality Control".

This makes me worried that maybe the Quality Control found some issue and one or more of my books has had to go back for regrading which can't possibly be a good thing. It's even more confusing because "Grading/Quality Control" is not an option listed on the CGC status explanations page.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

  9. I created a submission back in May for grading. Several of the comics were Spider-Man and I purchased the Amazing Spider-Man NYC custom label available at the time. Before submitting them to CGC I submitted them to a third party (not CGC) for pressing.

CGC received my submission from the presser a few weeks ago. Today I was browsing the custom label options and realized the ASM NYC label has been retired. Will they still give me the NYC label since I purchased it already, or do I need to contact them to try to get a different custom label like the universal Spider-Man label, or will they just stick me with the basic universal grade label?

    Thanks!

What's the difference? Do you save $5 per invoice?

No because they still separate each invoice out into different “submissions “ and charge the $5 handling fee for each submission.

For example, in the Modern tier invoice I just completed, I had some books with custom labels and some without. I got charged two handling fees- one for each group. If you have two different tiers, I’m sure it would be the same.

When I asked CGC, they said it would not make any difference which way you do it.

  11. It's interesting but I actually figured out that you are allowed to combine multiple tiers into one submission. You start the order with one tier and enter all the comics that go under that tier into the online form. Then you click "Review Cart". When it takes you to the "Review" screen, you click "+ Add Another Service". This takes you back to the service selection menu. You can then select another service (Grade/Press/etc) and a new tier. You add all the comics that you go under that tier. When you go back to the Review Cart page, both tiers will be there in the same Cart.

I called CGC to confirm this was okay. They said it was. But they said that once they open the box and process it, the two different tiers will be split up and processed and shipped back to you separately, and you have to pay for two return shipping fees.

Unfortunately for me I figured this out after I'd already checked out and completed the packing slip for one of my tiers, but this is good to know for the future.

  12. Hey all! I am submitting books to CGC for the first time. I have one book that I think needs to be submitted under the standard tier because of its value (ASM 300). The rest are all modern tier.

I could not figure out a way to submit books under two different tiers through the online submission form. Am I missing something, or does CGC not allow multiple tiers on one submission?

    Thanks!
