I have this one. Can I join the club?
Tec 30 CGC 3.5 - Bought off Metro nearly 2 weeks ago, paid top dollar but it was worth every penny.
Holy "I didn't exist yet" Bat-Man!
I thought it was awesome getting to see the pics you shared with me the other day but they really didn't do this treasure justice!
This book is phenomenal Alex.
Welcome to the club.
Maybe, just maybe we'll welcome you back if you can manage to find another.
Of course I only have one myself but...who's counting?
Thanks!
Still having trouble finding good lighting to take pics.
And I need to fix the poly sleeve crease over the "3.5"
Well maybe I can find at least 1 more (or 7)
No worries, I knew the crease was in the sleeve and it can't detract from such an AMAZING book.
It would be hard to top this one.

Since I have two that are complete, I guess I qualify. My holdings are:
27 - Rebuilt from a copy missing the cover, 3 centerfolds, and a page
in the last half of the book. All missing parts replaced and new staples.
The Batman story is complete. There are tear seals.
28 -Missing cover, 5 outer wraps (entire Batman story is gone) and centerfold
is missing. Cost $75.00 about 10 years ago.
29 - A coverless copy with a xerox wraparound cover and restapled. May have
minor restoration (tear seals) inside.
30 - Coverless
31 - Coverless
32 - Coverless and a coupon out a page in the back
33 - Coverless and missing a coupon on the centerfold. Paid $400 at Chicago
sometime in the mid 1990's.
34 - Complete (low grade)
35 - Coverless, last page missing.
36 - Complete
37 - Coverless.
I am not setup for scans, so no pictures. So 8 that need replacing.
Any chance you could share a digital pic group shot?

Put me down for one. I had a #35 missing the front cover and a #37 but those are gone.
I remember when you first got that book.
I was so jelous...still am.

very fair price IMO...a .5 complete that was tattered went for $3300 two years ago on eBay..I'd rather pay the xtra $2k and have no BC but have the all IMPORTANT FC to this Bat gem (thumbs u
yep. might be the same copy as rockman's but I think it is a different one if he has had his copy since 07-08...I think the .5 copy Terry obtained last year was from a local collector (SoCal), so probably a different copy..
Terry O'Neil offered me a CGC .5 o/w Tec 31 last year before I bought my copy...it was sold to someone in NY and Yannis finally got it...not sure if this is the same copy Rockman, but Terry had offered it to me for $5500...Very, VERY impressive!
I'm sure you can't wait to see the #29 when you get it back.
I also really like your #31, reminds me of my #33 due to the solid PQ and the missing the back-cover. Out of curiosity, what do you think the FMV on the #31 would be?
Good question. I'm not sure what is the current FMV for a 31...nor do I follow trends. I guess I'm what you call a value investor, looking to profit from a long term hold. For the entire run (including Bat 1), my upfront costs didn't go above 15K...and most of the books were bought in 2007-2008.
Was it missing a back-cover as well?
There are two .5's on the census so it's a very likely possibility; the fact that both have the back-cover missing is an interesting coincidence as I doubt it was a re-sub.
$5,500 seems like a strong price but certainly not out of line for a book of Tec #31's magnitude; especially when there are only 27 graded unrestored copies to-date.
I know the overall conditions vary...but boy doesn't that make me feel fortunate to have landed by Tec #33 when I did.

I can confirm that there are indeed 2 CGC .5 Tec 31 Blue's both missing the Back Cover.
But it is important to note the one Rockman has is far superior to the "other" copy out there. (thumbs u
Well if the owner of the "other" copy wants to donate their Tec #31 to a worthy cause, I'd be happy to pair it up with its Tec #33 brother.

alan is just joking, but it is impressive to see 3 tec 27's at once~! all were metro inventoryI let Vinnie fondle 1 of my 3 Detect #27's at SDCC:I knew you once owned a coverless copy but this is an entirely different story.
Do you still own any of the three?
Agreed. (thumbs u
Awesome for Metro to have held three copies at once for sure.
I wonder when the 4.0 on Metro/CC will sell and how much it will eventually sell for.
-
These two offerings are beaters but will hold demand and value regardless,,
The first book was from Metropolis about 4 years ago..
The interior back page is interesting,,a piece of paper was glued to the interior back page. On the piece of paper are names and dates of different people..
It seems the book was maybe in a library, school or even a hospital and readers would return the book when they were finished and then logged in for another interested reader.
The book is a return copy so it could have been donated to any number of places where it could be read over and over probably by children or even adults?
The second book is a coverless beater won for less than a hundred bucks on ebay about 4 or 5 years ago..
Both books are awesome!
The first one appears as though it might have some good history behind it and the second was simply a "steal of a deal" that many people today would wish they bid on a few years back.

That sounds about right. Yannis gave me a great deal, accepting cash plus comics. My records show it was sold by amerweb on eBay (4/21/2008) with a Buy It Now of $4K. The slab went to a buyer on the West Coast who sold it to Terry's Comics. Terry sold it to someone on the East Coast. It fell off the back of a truck. (kidding) Yannis picked it up, bought it, sold it to me. Now it's back on the West Coast again.
If only this slab can talk, there might be a movie: The Brotherhood of the Traveling Comic Book.
I'm just surprised that the book has had that hard of a time finding a home. There are many collectors out there who would not only love to own a book like that but would make it the centerpiece of their personal collections.

Detective Comics #33: CGC .5 (Back cover missing; WHITE Pages)
This was a book that I had wanted for many years. I learned long ago that Detective Comics #27 would be way out of my price-range and at this point, the same could be said of any copy of Batman #1 that isn't coverless.
I was very fortunate that a fellow board-member, "Bat-Man", was willing to sell me his copy. It was a book that I had wanted ever since he first shared it with me and I feel very fortunate to now be able to call it my own.
Obviously the book has been through a lot. It has some serious mouse-chew and the back-cover is missing. What I found amazing is that despite the obvious defects, what remains of the book is still in fantastic condition. White pages and the classic image of Batman on the front-cover is still 100% in-tact.
If it were not for the defects, this book would have never been anywhere near my price-range and I'd have to settle for a higher graded copy of a much less significant issue. Detective Comics #33 has always been one of my personal favorites because I simply love the cover and feel that the story of Batman's origin is the most important Golden Age story ever told.
And thus...I'm proud to call myself "Detective33Kid".
Have you checked with CGC that they actually got rid of the mice before sealing the slab ... cause if the mice are still in there in the holder then they probably wont stop chewing the book?
Congrats! Great book - on of a kind copy of a great milestone ...
Might very well have been one of the most valuable meals ever eaten.
I tried to do my best to look through the slab to make sure they were gone and thankfully...they were!
Nevertheless, I owe those mice a debt of gratitude. Had it not been for their pricey dinner one evening...this milestone issue would have never been available to me.

It'd be interesting to see census numbers alongside your running tally there. The Pre-Robin Tec Club list (updated):
Tec #27: 0
Tec #28: 3
Tec #29: 1
Tec #30: 1
Tec #31: 3
Tec #32: 2
Tec #33: 3
Tec #34: 1
Tec #35: 3
Tec #36: 5
Tec #37: 2
I'm sure it's too early to tell after only one day (for instance, we know Tec #28 is far more scarce than Tec #34 even though the list so far wouldn't seem to indicate that).
Still, I think it will prove to be quite interesting to see what issues people have in their collections. 24 total Pre-Robin Tecs in one day is a pretty impressive figure; glad to see the thread is catching on. (thumbs u

I'd say that you invested well then. (thumbs u
I'm sure those books will pay off in the long-run.
Very impressive indeed.

Here's my run in no particular order. I've been very lucky in acquiring affordable, low-grade pre-Robins before the prices skyrocketed. Not displayed below, are a Tec 29 (currently being restored by Ken) and a Bat 1 (shown elsewhere). I also used to own a Tec 37, now in the collection of Alex.
Very, VERY impressive!
I'm sure you can't wait to see the #29 when you get it back.

My lone entry into the club...Matt Nelson says it has a 50/50 shot at a 5.5 and the CGC graders contemplated it...but I love it as is...
If one were to ever have a lone entry, that's a fantastic book to do it with!
Any story as to you went about acquiring it?
-
I just snuck in under the wire, I found a 'tec 37 about 10 years ago at an antique store, it was a decent VG...except for that thumb sized chunk out of the center LH edge of the back cover, The antique dealer knew that he had a good comic, and we parted ways about $75 apart. He wouldn't budge down, and I wouldn't budge up. About a year later I got a call, and he offered to split the difference. I offered $25 beyond my last offer...and bought it for $350.
Kept it a couple years, read it a few times and enjoyed it greatly....but I'm more of a Superman guy than a Batman guy, and I eventually sold it to a dealer amigo for $600. Heh, sure wish I had it back now....
Not everyday that you find a Pre-Robin Tec in an antique store; very interesting story.
Wonder where the book is today?
-
what about a tec 27 and a tec 31...would that countImran and Andre and the "new" George and RickRick, you and I both know that you have a Pre-Robin Tec or two stashed away in your collection...
Can I get back to you on that one?
-
Imran and Andre and the "new" George and Rick
Rick, you and I both know that you have a Pre-Robin Tec or two stashed away in your collection...

I think that it is about time that we began a club devoted to one of the most beloved runs in the history of the Golden Age; the famous "Pre-Robin Tec" run.
Detective Comics #27-37...
*Your copy: how did you get it?
*Where did you get it from?
*Why did you get it?
*What kind of condition is it in?
*Stories behind the book.
*Interested in picking up a copy?
*Interested in picking up another copy?
Pretty much anything that you can think of related to the Pre-Robin Tec run is fair game. (thumbs u

Great name and congrats! Now, I just need a pre-robin Tec to join this club.
You need a Tec 31 for the club and for "mind explosion"
Definitely like Tec 31 and for "mind explosion" as you mention. Also, thinking 29 or 35.
I think with how difficult finding an Action 13 is proving to be, your gonna beat me to "mind explosion" first.
29,31,35 - can't go wrong with any. Mega Grails one and all.
Maybe you guys could swap copies?
-
Definitely like Tec 31 and for "mind explosion" as you mention. Also, thinking 29 or 35.
If the grades and asking prices were equal, I'd go with Tec #29 for sure; I'd even take a lower-graded 29 over a higher-graded 35 depending on the degree of disparity of course.
Can't go wrong either way though. (thumbs u
-
thats great!
it has white pages (thumbs u
Say what you will, Tec 33 is great due to its historical importance. (thumbs u
No question about it.
As I've said before, Batman's origin from Tec #33 is arguably the most important GA story ever told. I think the issue's truly GREAT cover gets lost a little bit due to some pretty stiff competion within the run.
