  1. My high school history teacher used to write the scripts for these about 30 years ago. He would always slip in references to US history (there was a whole secretly Nixon themed one) that I'm sure his students were the only people in the world to know about.
  2. I have a few glossy, non-stapled books (not sure the technical name for them) like Akira #1 or Killing Joke (1st edition) that have some marks on the back. I always assumed this would make the grade take a huge hit, so wasn't thinking of submitting them or anything. Then I saw this... https://www.comicconnect.com/item/954918 It got a 9.8, and it looks like the back has exactly the issues I'm talking about (unless what I'm seeing is on the slab itself?). Does this kind of color rub, white marks, or whatever I'm seeing keeping the back from being a solid, shiny blue not deduct from the grade?
  3. if there's no spine roll, might it be a 9.8? Just trying to figure out if I have any flawless books.
  4. I'm trying to figure out if I can pick a 9.8 candidate. I think (hope) this book might qualify. (not that I'm going to ever send it in, this is more about me testing my knowledge).
  5. I'd probably be selling these through mycomicshop, since I don't have a well-known eBay store, so there's their commission too. But I think for books I could list for $100, it still could make sense. I wish there was a local person who could look at my books and tell me if they had a shot at a 9.8. I know I can post in the forum, but I'd love to hear from someone who could look IRL. Anyone on here from Dayton, Ohio?
  6. I guess my big problem is not knowing what books might need a clean and press first, there is no pre-screen for clean and press for moderns. This would be for books that I'm somewhat confident might get a 9.8 as-is.
  7. No, I'm not sure - but I can eliminate books that I'm pretty sure wouldn't qualify, and I can easily find 25-30 books in my collection that would get over $100 if they do make 9.8 (unless I'm way off and a ton of these don't make it, in which case bad news for me)
  8. Still a brand-newbie at this (I posted on the board about re-opening my childhood collection after 30 years), but here's my question: I want to sell some of my collection. I have a lot of books that sell for a few bucks raw or over $100 slabbed at 9.8. A lot of people think slabbing your own stuff is a waste of money, but why wouldn't I take all my best-looking books (no obvious blemishes) that routinely get over $100 on eBay at 9.8, submit them for prescreening at 9.8 and just send them all at once. Even with shipping both ways, it seems like I'd make a profit, no? Here's one example, but I have tons of books like this (this isn't my book, just a book I own selling for a lot more slabbed):
  9. Thanks for your suggestions, everyone! I have a lot of reading to do. Ordered the first book of the Manhattan Projects and a few books of the Wheton X-Men, and when I'm done reading those I'll return to this thread!
  10. You named a ton of books - if you had to pick one of those - which would you start with?
  11. I'm a big Buffy fan and had no idea that Joss worked on X-Men - that sounds fun! Just ordered the first three volumes used from Abe Books - thanks for the recommendation!
  12. Guess it doesn't have to be currently published - anything in the last 20 years honestly would work.
  13. No particular favorite characters, I was an X-Men fan, but not really attached to any of them now. I guess the best fit would be something really groundbreaking and literary that does something new with the format, the way Maus or Watchmen were when they came out. Beautiful art is a plus.
  14. I've posted a few times in this forum before - I used to read comics (X-Men and spinoffs, Akira, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Maus, etc) in the early 90's, then stopped reading when I went off to college, sealed my books up (with a letter to my future self) and then just opened them up a few weeks ago. Looking back at them is getting me curious to see what comics are like these days, and I'm looking for recommendations for a great current book. I'm not really into current Marvel/DC movies and probably less into superheroes, but would be interested if they were really well written with a fresh take. What's an unmissable, great title you would recommend I start with these days? Thanks!
  15. I'm about to send Avery a bunch of books to clean and press. He's been super responsive, called me on the phone and seems like a very decent guy who does all the work himself. Reviews I've read have been good. Just wanted to hear if anyone on here has real-life experience with his work before I send a box in the mail to him. Thanks!
  16. I'm the one who discovered the letter in my comic collection. It was super cool to find, but also made me wish I'd written a letter to my future self that wasn't just about comics.
  17. Fellow soup and sandwich lover here - you should definitely go for the 1/2 and 1/2. A big bowl of soup will get cold by the time you finish it, and even the best sandwiches can get a little monotonous. Plus soup is filling and, let's face it, we could both stand to lose a few, am I right? Get the 1/2 and 1/2 and eat the soup first - if you're full after the soup, throw the sandwich in the fridge- BAM, you've got dinner. Unless the sandwich is any kind of salad (tuna salad, chicken salad) in which case, hard pass - go with the full bowl. Hope this helps. tl;dr - can't go wrong with half soup, half sandwich.
  18. Still new at this, but I have a number of comics from my childhood collection in about this condition. I'd like to have a few cleaned, pressed and graded. My big question is, what kind of grade do you think this might get AFTER a clean and press? (trying to temper my expectations and figure out if it's worth sending a small stack of my best stuff in, or nah). If you think they can get to a 9.2 or above, I'd probably do it, if most people think they wouldn't, I wouldn't bother - or maybe just send very few. Thanks!
  19. That's something I never considered - I assumed if I pack it well, once it arrives at the presser, it's not going to be further damaged. Do people honestly have many experiences of CGC damaging books during handling? I feel like that would kill their business if it was even a semi-frequent occurrence.
  20. What's a high grade in your book? I have a feeling most of them would be at least a 9.0, just based on what I'm seeing on forums.
  21. And it has an ad for a jewelry store insert, which apparently is a thing?
  22. What does holding for a signature series mean? I'm pretty tempted to send a bunch in to possibly be pressed and graded. It sounds fun.
  23. Is it just the corners that are dinging it or other factors?
