  1. No banjo-playing 'roo in this book. A local reprint of #1 in a short-lived Fiction House series (of four), and a badly miscut one at that. But one that @1950's war comics might like. Inside you'll find this four page ultra-abbreviated account of the "Marianas turkey shoot" - aka the air battle that formed part of the Battle of the Philippine Sea in 1944. While much is made of the extraordinary shootdown rate by the US Navy aviators (which destroyed most of the Japanese aircraft attacking the USN fleet, with 20 lost versus ~ 600 on the Japanese side) it was really the sinking of three Japanese aircraft carriers and two auxiliary oilers in the battle (two of the carriers were sunk by submarines and one by aircraft) that cemented the allied victory. Despite the title, this story focus on the air attack on the Japanese carriers, rather than actual 'turkey shoot' aspect of the battle. And it doesn't mention the important role of the submarines, so exaggerating the success of the air attacks. </prof AJD>

    Jet Aces 1 (Australian)

From the album: Australian golden (and a few silver) age comics

Bit of a factory miscut on this one!
  3. Lassie was truly a dog among dogs. There was nothing she couldn't do, as long as opposable thumbs or higher cognitive processes weren't required.
  4. Another Australian reprint. I suppose the cover has a certain period appeal... ... but the stories in this comic are very, very ordinary. Here's an example of the side-splitting humour to be found under the covers (you'll see what I did there).
  5. Yes, it's Danish. Some of the lots are mixes of 'foreign' editions, so UK + others.
  6. I love Dells, and am very partial to pence copies, so I did a little digging through the Heritage archive. There are quite a few in their back catalogue. For example, this lot has this description: Dell Golden and Silver Age Foreign Editions Group of 29 (Dell, 1950s-60s) Condition: Average FN+. Includes UK editions of Luke Short's Bounty Guns #17, Annie Oakley #3, 4, and 6; I Love Lucy #3, 5, 6, and 13-15; Lassie #4, 6, 10, 12, and 14-18; and Rin Tin Tin #1-4, 6, and 10-12; And there's this lot, with Dell Golden Age Foreign Editions Group of 7 (Dell, 1950s) Condition: Average GD. Includes Roy Rogers Comic Album #2 (UK edition), Roy Rogers Comics #9 (UK edition) And then there's whatever the hell this 'Zorro #50" is... Most of those look like honest to goodness UK reprints to me, rather than pence overprinted Dells, but you might want to take a look. Incidentally, if you type "UK edition" into the ha.com search engine for comics, you find 712 hits. There are LOTS of Marvels. I'm not sure which ones are 'missing' but it seems worth the time of a sad and lonely dedicated pence collector to take a squiz.
  7. I should keep going through the little pile of varied Australian comics I picked up. Not quite sure yet which ones I'll keep. This one is a reprint of a Dell Four Color book (#413 in 1952 and again as #669 in 1955 - I'm assuming that it was reissued when the Richard Todd film did the rounds again). Not a bad pickup anyway. It's a very presentable copy, and I have in the back of my mind that a good project on reduced retirement income would be a full run of the 2,000+ Australian Disney reprints (I have about 10% of them now). This one appeared as a one shot, rather than as part of an established series, and I haven't seen it around so often, so it's definitely a keeper for now. The colour in this edition is just beautiful.
  8. It doesn't help that sometimes lowballs work. There was a low grade but rare Australian comic on local eBay last week with a BIN of $1000. Probably worth $200-250. It got relisted at $600 two days later. I was thinking I'd make an offer if it dropped again, only to see it sold the next day. Using the worthpoint tool, I see the seller accepted $165. In that case 33% of asking was more than was required to get it. It has changed my thinking about offering on BINs set well above a sensible price.
  9. That's a fair size piece off the back and a nibble at the top, as well as the creasing etc. Maybe 2.0/2.5? In the grading comp it would be a 17.3 So... what did I not see?
  10. CGC can get confused by these. Exhibit A:
  11. Eh, for books with cents pricing, fill your boots mate. I'm the Australian pence king. Though I would point out that there were earlier Australian ASMs, such as these 'two-fer' reprints from Yaffa press...
  12. Love the story, but that certainly isn't a Barks cover, with the possible exception of the hand/gun/silhouette on the LHS. The ducks are 1000% not Barks.
  13. A few nominations for Frank Miller here. Sure, he did some great stuff, but without Will Eisner there'd have been no Frank Miller.
  14. The Australian westerns sell OK, but mostly the reprints don't attract very high prices - maybe $10-30. The Black Fury is probably one of those. Some Australian originals sell for much more, like Lone Wolf (see below). What's the third book you have?
  15. Thinking historical figures from the golden age, how about Carl Barks Will Eisner Bill Gaines Jack Kirby
  16. Is this a Commonwealth-inclusive thread? I managed to get one of the two Australian Dell pence issues that I know to exist.
  17. I also now recall Barks saying that the 'tornado hits money bin' story in WDC&S 126 was a favourite, and that it 'could almost be set to music'. I love that story, and I bought a reprint to give to an economist friend of mine.
