  1. Those are clearly coverless copies with repro covers. The sad thing is that I think there'd be a market for them, properly disclosed. But this guy goes for the extra $ through the sin of omission in his descriptions.
  2. I have to say I can't get too enthused about that - the figure in the foreground framed by the ammo feed is great, but given the proximity of the enemy fighter, there's no way that scene doesn't end with a mid-air collision about a quarter of a second later. There are a lot of Wings covers I can't bring myself to collect for the same reason - either a crash into the ground or a collision is inevitable given the 'pose'. See Wings 27 , 35, 48 and 59 for a few examples (there are many others). At least #20 gets it right!
  3. No - here's an extract from their 2013 press release (you can read the whole thing here): Currently, CGC’s stance on tape allows for its presence to fix a detached cover, a tear or to re-attach a piece of the comic. This would still allow the book to receive a Universal Label and even a possible grade increase from what the book would have been had tape not been present. After consideration of the expressed views of the community and assessment of the practice, beginning with submissions postmarked after May 3, 2013, CGC will modify its grading standard and ignore the presence of tape if it serves a function (such as fixing a tear or spine split) and instead grade the book as if it was not present. Therefore, any existing defect will be graded accordingly. If the tape does not serve a function, the tape will be treated as a defect and the book will be downgraded. By doing this, books will still receive a Universal Label but the grade will better reflect the actual condition of the comic book. In other words, that's not a 2.5 by the current rules.
  4. And would be again under the new CGC rules on tape. The front and back covers have been reattached with tape. These days CGC would grade it as if the tape wasn't there.
  5. I enjoy reading this thread, but I have to ask a question - why do you (and others) care about multiples of expenses? Surely the relevant question is "did my profit on the day repay me for the time invested"? I could imagine doing 10x, but if it works out at $20/hour, I might well decide to do something else.
  6. I think I'd be OK with that as a 9.0 - NM, not so much.
  7. @Doohickamabob ! So that's where it comes from.
  8. There was a bit of that going around.
  9. Here's the rest of the Dell issues: 6,7,10,11,and 12
  10. Those are 4, 5, 8, 9 and 13. I'll have to upload the others later.
  11. I don't need a lot of encouragement to post these. This is the second one. Here's a group shot, and I'll post the others later.
  12. OK, it's a silver age book, but close enough. I have all of the Dells Peanuts, and they never cease to make me smile. (I can post them here if you collectively want.)
  13. Huh - Ive been reading about military aviation for 40 years and had somehow managed to never read about that. Interesting stuff. Thank you!
  14. Yes, it's that one. The spine split doesn't bother me. I'll probably seal it once I've done a paper conservation course I've been eyeing off. I've actually being buying books with 'practice potential' lately. I'm not sure what you mean? He said 'the Japanese (?) poster pinned to the gunner's back' - which is where the nationalist flag is.
  15. Yeah - that's another great cover. Different model of B-17 on that one, because the waist gun windows are staggered instead of being opposite. Agreed. I like it a lot. Here's a recent acquisition of a quite different genre. And since too much GGA is never enough, here's a splash from inside. This'll shiver your timbers... arrr.
  16. Alas, I fear that all the early Daredevils are like that. I honestly think that if not for Frank Miller, Daredevil would be a solid C-grade character to this day.
  17. because of the stigma in the market, restoration is rarely cost-effective. I wouldn't even consider it for that book. And the book-length colour-breaking crease will keep the grade down in any case. You should just keep it raw and enjoy being able to flip through it.
  18. Ooo, traffic in my thread... oh, wait. @Marwood & I is welcome here any time. Shills, not so much.
  19. Yes, the info came from a phone call a helpful US-based boardie made for me. I was surprised it was broken down like that, but presumably that's because there was a big discrepancy in the grades assigned.
  20. Here's my only 1939 book, but it has a cool July 4 patriotic cover, and a movie ad on the back (for a Disney short, naturally). I think I'm going to enjoy this thread. The Life letters were really interesting, as the tension between isolationism and involvement is pretty obvious.
