  1. So I’m definitely confused. CGC or CA is lying at this point, CGC keeps stating they are waiting on the stickers. But I emailed CA and they emailed back saying CGC has everything?

    You can't.

Here is my recent (May 21 to 23) email exchange with submissions@cgccomics.com:

Me: "Hello, The status of my comic I sent in over a year ago to get signed by Mr. Jackman is unretrievable. It was submitted over 16 months ago, which I suppose is why I can't query it on your consumer-facing website. Can you help me? This is in regards to Order Confirmation # CGC0000000000."

Customer Service: "Hello, Thank you for contacting us. It is my pleasure to assist you today with your inquiry. I was able to pull up your submission in our system and see that it has officially been signed by Hugh Jackman and is in the process towards completion. We apologize for the delay as we awaited for the signing to take place. You should be receiving shipping information regarding your submission shortly. Please let us know if we can further assist. Best regards"

Me: "Thank you. Can you further describe what you mean by “shortly”? I am not trying to be cheeky, it’s just that I’ve already waited 16 months to learn that it has just been signed."

Customer Service: "Hello, Thank you for your response. Your book has been signed, graded, and encapsulated and is just awaiting for the hologram sticker from Celebrity Authentics. Once we receive these stickers your book will be sent back to you. We appreciate your patience and understanding. Best regards"

So now I have to wait for a special sticker from Mr. Jackman's representative?

I do have more questions ("And where exactly are those stickers? Are they in Florida, or elsewhere?"), but I gave up. I will just wait, I suppose.

Oh wait, I did receive this email request at 9:01 pm on May 23:

"Hello, We’d love to hear what you think about your recent interaction with our Customer Service team. Please take a moment to answer one simple question by clicking either link below:

**Note: The agent's reply may be further down in your email Inbox (if messages are sorted from newest to oldest), Please check your inbox and spam folders for a reply before completing this survey.

How would you rate the support you received?

    Good, I'm satisfied

    Bad, I'm unsatisfied

Here’s a reminder of what the inquiry was about: Subject – 'My order with CGC regarding Hugh Jackman' with agent So-and-so.."

This is a poorly designed interaction from the corporation. Like, do their people know that such a request appears to originate from the "too soon" bucket of ignorance and that it hearkens to algorithmically-generated probing? Not personal at all. When I reach out to the Customer Service Department, I have a specific query, as do most people I suppose, and by grabbing me by the neck and pulling me in with an algorithmically-generated "how we doin'?" kissy-face gesture, not only do they generalize the particular, which is what good customer service does not do, but they also turn my inquiry about my service that I paid for with my own money, about themselves, about the corporation. That's way too soon. (I have not replied to their probe, and I have no intention of doing so. What a sorry way to interact with customers.)

Bro what are you talking about lol

  3. Does anyone know how to look up our hugh jackman submission now that it’s not showing up?? I called Monday and he told me it’s almost to shipping. Just trying to check on it

I think if this book cleans up, 7.0+ is definitely possible. As is...I'd say yeah, 6.0/6.5 tops. Get a good presser and make sure they clean too--a lot of the dirt and grime, especially over the whites, should come off nicely. And a lot of the creasing looks non-color-breaking. Unfortunately, it looks like a bit of the grime on the BC might be foxing (lower left side), which will not come out. All that said, I think a 7.5 is very possible with a good C&P (8.0/8.5 if what I saw isn't actually foxing and comes off). Good luck!

    Just finished pressing and cleaning!

6.0/6.5 I would be careful assuming the reported census on newsstands is accurate. CGC only recently started differentiating between direct and newsstands in the census/lables, so there is like some percentage of the total graded that are newsstand, but without complete records. In 1984 somewhere north of 60% of the print runs are estimated to be newsstand. Personally, I'd be hesitant to grade this comic in this conditions b/c there are just so many graded copies already out there already.

Haha i mean I don’t care that much about that aspect. I just noticed it on the census and thought it was cool! I’m goin to clean and press and see what happens! I already own a 9.8 direct. Was just hoping I could maybe pull off a 7+! Haha but not holding my breathe

    Probably a 9.8.

If you have it in hand and cannot find anything perceptibly (by the naked eye l wrong with it, you have a winner.

    Thanks for posting.

Yeah I have it in hand, heck I have even examined it multiple days to see if I missed something and used a magnifying glass lol. I’ll be happy with 9.8 but man I feel like this is my best shot at higher! I’m shipping it out next week. Waiting on Gemini shipper order. I want the shipping to be bullet proof

I don't think we can help you much here. Anything above a 9.8 is mystical magical land. The only thing we really know for certain is that above 9.8 you need to have pretty much zero manufacturing defects. Maybe they flip 10 coins and if they all come up heads you get a 9.9 and then they flip ten more and if you get all heads again you get a 10 lol. In fact, I'm very reluctant to tell anyone on the internet if their copy is even a 9.8 by looking at photos. It's the kind of thing you have to look at in person to have a good idea and even then it's not certain. That said, it looks like I might see some very small bindery tears/manufacturing defects in the corners that might preclude you from getting a 9.9. Also, the staple placement is a bit displeasing, aesthetically (not that it matters, necessarily). But, you never know till you submit. I wish you luck!

Haha yeah man I have no idea how they decide haha. I will submit. I’m 99.9% it’s atleast a 9.8 but you never know!!

Always completely remove any tape before removing/inserting a book from its bag, I also started using these to keep the flaps closed.

    As far as a grade...

Slight color loss from tape pull, slight edge wear with a color breaking crease at the lower edge, slightly blunted corners, minor spine stress with a couple of color breaking spine ticks/small tears, slightly discolored staples, slight spine roll, minor foxing on both front and rear covers.

    IMO...

    FN+ 6.5 (FN/VF 7.0?)

    7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF):  Back to Top
An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. Corners may be blunted. Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Slight staple tears and a small accumulation of light stress lines may be present. Slight rust migration. Paper is cream to tan. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.

    6.5 FINE+ (FN+):  Back to Top
Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.

6.0 FINE (FN):  Back to Top
An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose.

Def learned the hard way with the tape. :( thank you my friend!

  9. Just curious what the grade is. I got to add an additional photo now because I’m a insufficiently_thoughtful_person and tape pulled some ink putting it back in…. Right below the E in Spider-Man :( but just curious what y’all think the grade is. Idk if I’m even going to send off now after that accident… so bummed

My grading skills are far from perfect which is why I am mostly a lurker on these message boards.  However, I do not think your comic can exceed an 8.0. It looks like there are at least four significant colour breaking spine ticks that are present on both sides of the book, as well as some lesser ticks. The dirt in the price box and Marvel Comics logo can probably be cleaned, but I think the spot on Spidy’s left leg is damage of some sort. Corners are a bit soft. The rear top left corner appears to have a slight crease and a tiny chip just below that corner. Also, one of the photos shows some general scraping around Spidy’s legs (but some of that might be allowable on these types of covers…I don’t know).

Good luck with the signature verification. You may want to try the Beckett online signature review for $10 first. They will review pictures and tell you if it is likely to pass a full authentication.

Dude thank you so much!!! I did not know Beckett had this!!!

Did you get this signed yourself? I hear stories of SL forgeries regularly, but I couldn't tell you if it's genuine. I see some medium grade stress lines along the spine. I don't think the cardstock covers press as well as a thinner paper and it looks like those stress lines break color. Corners are a little blunted. 9.0/9.2.

9.0-9.2 without press? Or with? And the guy was reputable but it’s always a fear of it is forged. I’d just have cbcs send back if it doesn’t pass the verification. And then cry a little bit haha.

IF you can remove the tape without damaging the book and get it pressed, I think this could easily be a 7.0.

Even with that bottom left tear? I didn’t even notice the damn tape cuz it’s clear and tiny. I just feel like even if I sell it I’ll only get like 150$ and that’s not worth it to me lol. Rather risk it and try and bump it up

I have 9.2 Direct Edition.  I understand how you feel about it.  Just pursue the high grade copy to make look good for your collection. I think the sales of ASM 238 is slowing down and it's probably little affordable.  I may pursue 9.4 or 9.6 but both 9.6 and 9.8 are too expensive right now so I can settle 9.4.

I just feel like I can’t even get 200$ for it. More like 150 lol. At that point I almost want to say F it and see if I can bust it open and try and bump the grade up. The tape is so small I didn’t even know it existed until the grader comments and I saw it just right in the light.
