I'm wondering how high that Seven Seas 4 CGC 8.5 in the next HA sig is going to go. Might be a record setter for romance.

Beautiful copy. Just curious, but is that a crack on the back of the case? In the upper-left corner, where the CGC label is... I can't tell if it's a cracked case, or some sort of scanning remnant.

The thread here at CGC seemed pretty tame, but a few people did post photos of one of the people involved, and then there were comments about the photos, stories about other incidents, and the standard (and to an extent justified) pile-on of posts angry about what happened.

Presumably some of the people involved complained about the thread, OR the powers that be decided it was too malicious, especially given that the people involved were longtime CGC customers, etc.

In my view, the thread was useful as a warning for people to know to secure their valuables at conventions, and other reasons that the thread's existence served the interest of the collecting community in protecting their property.

Whatever the reasons the thread was yanked, go to the Bleeding Cool story. It tells you everything you would need to know about the situation.

That's the best kind of pre-order deal. The point of a pre-order is a guaranteed sale, not a profit inflated above the actual market value.

 

If the pre-order deal doesn't explicitly offer that kind of adjustment, then maybe it's best not to pre-order at all.

How does that work for a Con exclusive?

No idea. The main place I've seen that implemented is on Amazon.

Thanks for the support guys. I do enjoy doing it and I know you guys enjoy it. I just don't want to compromise any boardies in the process. I feel having pictures of fellow boardies enjoying their books is just as important as showing walls of books or girls in skimpy outfits. WonderCon is coming up soon we'll see.

I just got another large batch of books back and Newton rings on almost every one to the point you can't see parts of the cover. Is no one else really having these issues?

I sent in a comic to be reholdered because of the Newton rings. CGC reholdered it for free. I got it back and the newly slabbed comic also has Newton rings, but they are much lighter and less noticeable. Only when I tilt the case at an angle are they visible. Looking at the case straight on, or at a lesser angle, they are not visible. I consider this an acceptable improvement.

I could take photos for side-by-side comparison if anyone is curious.

Imagine buying a fast pass at Disney. This gets you to the front of the line. The day you are there the park attendance is low and the fast pass doesn't really matter.

Please tell me what calendar day this happened to you, so I can plan my next Disney trip accordingly.

Does grading seem tighter now than usual?

Just wondering what most of you guys think about people who sell books on e-bay with incredibly high BIN prices. Do you see anything wrong with this?

I can see why people would do it if they have the highest-graded copy of something. The BIN price might reflect the projected outcome of a bidding war between determined bidders.

The part that I have a problem with is if somebody uses the high BIN as a way to market the item for a negotiated off-eBay sale.

I've seen some curiously high prices on Amazon too, for things like out-of-print books, CDs, DVDs or other media. There will be a CD of some semi-obscure band for $200, even though it's easy enough to find a used copy of the same CD elsewhere for $15. Not sure why people do that. I wonder if it's being done to drive up price averages or some other form of manipulation.

(Another thing on Amazon that I hate: It will tell you when the price of an item has dropped a percentage from a previous price, but it never tells you when the price has gone up from a previous price.)

This is one of the tougher Modern Love issues...in fact, one of the three Modern Love issue that Overstreet calls "scarce" (4-6). There used to be 3 copies on the census, now there are 4.

 

I just read the cover story... That poor doctor gets dragged to party after party, and he's just trying to build a practice so he can start his own hospital! Poor guy. He performs an emergency appendix operation while he's about to fall asleep. On the way home he crashes his car, but his faithful nurse takes care of him. She's the one who really loves him -- not that society skank dragging him around like a boytoy and holding him hostage with her hospital seed money! I won't tell you how this story ends....I'll leave you in suspense...

Others have already pointed out a few of these, but:

(1) Try different browsers. If it doesn't work in Firefox, try Chrome. Or Safari, or whatever alternatives you have available.

(2) Check the file size of your JPG. Try to keep the file size under 200k if possible. Also try to keep the pixel resolution under 1200 pixels (both width and height).

(2b) You say you're using JPGs so that's good (better than GIF or PNG). Double-check the settings of your JPG though -- make sure it's not interlaced, un-flattened or anything other than the standard file type. If you're sizing or adjusting the JPG in Photoshop, see also if you can save it "for web," and set the DPI/resolution level to 72 instead of 300 or something. (Recent versions of Photoshop buried the "for web" option but it's still there if you poke around, and use "help" if you can't find it.)

(3) Can you upload images OK to other sites (besides Flickr)? Such as the CGC forums? If not, there could be something blocking your work computer -- maybe its anti-virus or firewall software.

I've looked through the last few pages of this thread and I still haven't seen any mention of where the show takes place.

Funny note about the Mad satire of "Empire Strikes Back": From a late panel, it is clear that Mort Drucker did not actually see the movie (or his memory was poor). After Han Solo has already been frozen in carbonite and Luke needs to be rescued from the underside of Cloud City, Drucker draws Leia in the Millennium Falcon saying they need to save Luke -- and Han Solo is sitting next to her! My understanding is often these satires were put together before the movie was released, and the movie studios supplied Mad with several dozen production stills to draw from. The satire's writer might have viewed an advanced preview of the film, but the artist might not have gone. Still, it's a pretty distracting mistake. I'm sure Drucker didn't lose a lot of sleep over it or anything.

I still love this SW parody. I'm sorry if I am taking up space with the pages.... these were my most favorite years of collecting.

No problem. It's still a great parody, like you said. They got Mort Drucker to do the Empire Strikes Back satire and he had a lot of fun with that (the final panel shows that they "fixed" Luke's severed hand, but they accidentally put a foot there in its place).

I don't know if this has been discussed before here, so I am starting a new topic.

What is the reason for Canadian versions of comics sometimes having a somewhat lower market value -- even though the comic's cover and content is the same?

I've seen this with a few different titles, such as Mad Comics, where the U.S. version will go for a high price, but the same exact Canadian issue in similar condition doesn't fetch nearly that price.

It would seem to me that the Canadian version would be even more rare than the U.S. version. Other than the difference in some of the ads, what is going on in terms of collectors' thoughts on the matter that would lead to a lower market value? (Is paper/printing quality affected?)

I'm not saying this has been true of all Canadian versions of U.S. comics, but I've noticed it for some.

I will never understand the need to slab a book you intend on keeping long term in your collection. At that point it becomes a thing, not a comic.

You could also punch holes in it-one hole for each grade point. 24 holes= 10.0

Each comic should be folded into an origami replica of its grade number.
