Keep in mind the big upsurge in prices that happened during the pandemic is over and prices are settling close to where they were in 2019. GPA shows the 12 month average for #1 in 8.0  is $270, 90 day average is $244 and last sale was $230. With the reprint #4 and mid-grade #107 consider yourself in good shape if you make back your slabbing cost.

Thank you.  The #4 is not a reprint.  Maybe I should adjust my pricing?  Or I'll accept best offers.

  2. Selling my collection.  I'm new to this so let me know if I'm missing anything.  I'm going to sell the whole Star Wars collection eventually but, I'm starting with these four and then I'll slab the key issues and sell those too.  For now:

    Star Wars #1 CGC 8.0 White Pages Not a reprint -  $300

Star Wars #4 CGC 9.2 Off-White to White Pages, Witman 35¢ variant, signed by Rick Hoberg (artist/embellisher) - $150

Star Wars #42 CGC 8.0 Off-White to White Pages, Boba Fett Intro  - $200

Star Wars #107 CGC 6.0 Off-White to White Pages, Last Issue Low Print Run - $75

Shipping to U.S. only via USPS, $20 (Is that fair?)

    No Returns on slabbed comics.

Payment: Zelle, Check, Money Orders, PayPal... I guess as last resort.

First "I'll Take It" gets it.  PM or post in thread...tie breaker is the timestamp.

Did I miss anything?  I'm new to this so if I'm way off on any of these, kindly let me know.

Here’s a good example of why I wouldn’t slab non-keys in the original Marvel Star Wars run unless you are confident they are in pristine condition:

    https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?ItemID=58331093

In an MCS auction ending in a few hours, there’s an 8.5 issue 29 with white pages and a pretty nice, clean looking slab.  The current bid is $27.  It might go up a bit more before the end, but not much. Whoever paid to have that slabbed and sent to MCS for auction probably is going to end up losing money on the process.

Good looking out.  I wasn't clear but, I only intend to slab the keys.
Is eBay a good place to sell them or would you recommend something else?  I have an old eBay account but no history of selling much and zero comic books so I'm wondering if that would hurt views or trust from the comic book buyers.

If by “Should I have them graded before selling or only grade the key issues,” you mean, should I have them graded and slabbed by CGC, then I would definitely only do the key issues.

Pre-pandemic I collected this entire run of Star Wars comics, mostly by buying individual raw copies off of eBay and graded copies of the key issues.  For the graded key issues, I bought 9.6s or 9.8s.  I did it just for fun since I had collected these as a kid.  Back in 2019, it wasn’t particularly expensive to get the whole run raw in mid-grade to upper-mid condition and I think that is still true today.  9.6 and 9.8 versions of the keys have increased substantially in value along with everything else since then, and your 8.0 issue 1 is a lot more valuable today than it would have been in 2019.  I also bought some graded and slabbed copies of non-key issues, but only 9.8s.  Even 9.6s of the non-key issues aren’t worth that much.  And based on the condition of your copies as you’ve described them, they’d likely grade out below 9.6–maybe significantly so.  If that’s the case, you’re probably going to spend more on having them graded and slabbed than you’d be likely to sell them for.

You got an 8.0 on issue 1 — that’s likely to be your most valuable book, followed by the 8.0 issue 42.  The 9.2 issue 4 isn’t going to be very valuable because it looks like a Whitman reprint.  You might consider pressing and slabbing the 2-6 newsstand versions (not the Whitman’s with no UPC label), the Empire Strikes Back books (issues 39-44) if they look like they are in decent shape, and maybe #68.  Before deciding what to do, you might post those issues in the Buddy Can You Spare a Grade forum to get a sense of How they would grade out.

If I were you, and I didn’t want to spend too much time on this, I might send the whole lot to My Comic Shop and have them include them in one of their weekly auctions as a group, or as multiple groups.  I think they’d advise you on the best approach to the auction.

Thanks for your feedback.  Yeah, I meant graded and slabbed by CGC.  Would you recommend a pressing as well?

  5. I laid out my collection and took pics of the covers.  I'd say they're all pretty much collector grade but not likely 9.6+
    I had 4 pressed and graded (6.0 8.0 8.0 and 9.2)

I want to sell my collection.

Questions, if you'd be so kind to answer:

Should I have them graded before selling or only grade the key issues?

Considering they were stored 10 per Ziploc bag and stacked in a box and the spines have a noticeable curl... would they benefit from pressing before being graded?

Should I sell individually or as a collection?

eBay or here on CGC forum?

Have a look and tell me what you think you'd do if you were me and wanted to sell to collectors.

    Thanks guys and gals,

    Kevin

There are two Whitman variants (or multi-pack editions, to use CGC's term) - one labeled Reprint, one that's not.  The version that you have would be worth a tad more than the reprint, IMHO, because some people would certainly shun a reprint.  As others have already confirmed, your comic is not the "rare" 35-cent variant.

While not the second opinion I wanted to hear, thank you for sharing your knowledge.  As far as pricing... A 9.2 35¢ "Whitman" is probably about $100 maybe more?

For an autograph they do, actually. You got lucky, most books like this usually get a Green label unless you specifically ask for a Blue. If you ask for a Blue, the autograph is considered damage and the grade is dinged according to the size and position of the signature.

Question:  If I sell it as an autographed copy by the cover artist, would that add any value or none at all?

Or maybe CGC just missed it entirely....being “hard to see”. That would explain the absence of a label note.

    * I had to google Rick Hoberg:shy:

They seent it and know that Rick Hoberg is the cover artist.  They just won't authenticate it as a legit signature.

    Grader Notes
    light bends to cover
light spine stress lines to cover
light writing top of front cover

It is small, hard to see, and unobtrusive, so maybe a 9.6 without it?

I may be totally off base but, I think the graders don't mark down for an autograph but, they won't authenticate it unless it was signed at a CGC event in the presence of an official who gives a cert of authenticity of something like that.

Multi-Pack edition is the PC term.  Many collectors call issues such as you've described as Whitmans because they've been solely documented as being distributed by Whitman. There are #4s that are first prints, and others marked as Reprint. Does your say Reprint along the spine next to the Luke?  I would guess not, or that would probably be indicated on your CGC label.

It definitely does not say Reprint.  It looks like the comic on the right.  What would that mean?
CGC census states they've graded 5 total.  I'd like to think that means it's a very rare grail but I don't know.

  11. Maybe one of you can answer a question about the #4 35¢ issue.  It's not the News Stand issue.  It's listed as multi-pack and hit has the diamond and no UPC.  I've seen copies that look like it listed as reprints but, CGC says it's a Multi-Pack edition.  I've seen some call them Whitmans and I gather that's a whole other kettle of fish.
    What gives?

  12. I asked if it was okay to post here and Adamantium said it would be okay to do so, so here goes...

I bought a collection of Marvel Star Wars from my wife's uncle.  He collected a lot of Star Wars memorabilia and he's getting older and didn't want to go through the process of selling his comic books.  The collection is almost complete with annuals and a few duplicates.  From here, I'll copy/paste what I wrote in the Noob thread.

    STAR WARS!
Okay, I'm new to this, as stated above.  I have just about all of the STAR WARS comics from 1977 - 198_
I just received 4 back from CGC today and I want to start selling and using the money to send more to get graded, repeat.

What's the best way to go about selling them?  CGC forum then eBay or Comicbookshop or whatever it's called?
    Here's what I got back...
    Star Wars #1 30¢ White pages 8.0

    #42 50¢ Off-White to White Pages 8.0

    #107 75¢ Off-White to White Pages 6.0

#4 35¢ Variant Off-White to White Pages 9.2 signed by Rick Hoberg

From what I've gathered, the #4 is worth a pretty penny and the others may be in the $200 - $400 range.  Is that about right?

Any help would be appreciated.  Hit me with anything you got from advice to questions and thank you in advance!

    I too have a #4 35 cent, it's the lowest graded copy. :)

9.2 however definitely sounds the top winner, seemingly the others are thereabouts, I'd be tempted to hold them. And yet there are times to sell, if'n you feel others are more your interests. A kind of go with your gut type thing. :)

I'm sure I want to sell the collection but, I'm not sure about the best way to go about doing that.  I've already decided to press and grade these 4 issues and from there, I suppose I need to prioritize the rest for another batch of grading.  I'm of the belief that it's more profitable to have them graded as opposed to selling them as raw books.  Is that right in most cases?

Thanks for your reply, btw.  Would it be okay to ask these same questions in the Bronze Comics forum (start a Star Wars collection thread)?

  15. My son was visiting his great uncle and discovered a box of Star Wars comics.  Turns out Uncle Jon wanted to get rid of them and offered to sell the box for $225.  I bought them and here I am wondering what the heck I'm doing.  CGC was the leading Google search when I started asking the interwebs how to sell a collection.

  16. Hello all.
Kevin here and I'm as noob as a noob can noob.  I bought a box of Star Wars Marvel comics from my wife's uncle last Summer and I've finally gotten around to sending four issues for pressing and grading.  They are on their way back to me now.  My hope is that I can sell them to knowledgeable collectors who will love them.
I sent in the four issues that I thought would be most valuable (based on a little bit of research) with the plan of using proceeds to grade other copies and sell those.

I'm at a bit of a loss and feeling way over my head so I'll just take this slowly and one step at a time.  Hopefully I'll not ask too many dumb questions and contribute to this community.

    Regards,

    Kevin
