As others have noted, if the auction house does indeed practice this "business model," I'd like to see it easier to find on their rules.
It's the reason NP Gresham has lived in Texas these past 25 years 😆

Wouldn't you just do a Reholder?

I have a story idea...how about the bringing back from the dead of Wally Wood, Jack Davis, Al Williamson, Johnny Craig, Harvey Kurtzman and Al Feldstein to create the art for these. I like the concept, I just can't wrap my head around the art, though. They had a real talent on making the art and background match the atmosphere of the story.
Substitute Ghastly for Kurtzman and I'm in!

Not that I would disagree with this but they manufacture books without a staple as it clearly has no evidence of being there , my take is this one is a lot harder to prove and basically no real way of proving it but still it could happen ..
Well anything's possible if you use the ol' Lloyd Christmas logic 😆

I'm interested to know why you think the centerfold may not have been there from a manufacturing error...it's a single sheet of paper, and held by only a single staple. Isn't the most parsimonious explanation of the absence of the centerfold that it was simply pulled out of the book at some point in the last 70+ years?
Of course it is. He's just trying to get a grade bump 😆

He set the boxes down and said, "anything in those is cover price". A lot of them weren't even bagged. I was astonished when he added them up at cover price and still took the 75% off. Apparently, those kinds of defects weren't a little thing to him
All the better for you! Congrats on a steal.

Would I buy this book today raw knowing it had Lorie on it? Yes, but I would have tried to negotiate the price more due to it. :-)
For what, an extra $5 off?

BUT wrote her name on the top of the first page, usually in ink, with a number showing which overall number the book was in her collection. Even so, they're still beauties, I got them nearly for free (literally 75% off cover price!), and I never would have been able to have afforded the same books at that time (mid 90's) without a name written in them
The good news is that a name written on the first page doesn't affect the grade. Great for you, but why would someone discount them 75% for such a little thing

I don't mean "yes, we have several", I rather mean "yes, we have several hundreds, here's a listing".

Maybe something from his Ring of the Nibelung adaptation? Or even a Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser story?
