  1. *cough* call me skeptical. Bob Storms, who probably sells more AF15s than anyone, or at least sells them on a very regular basis, recently sold a truly nice looking 6.0 for 60K. I say 'truly' because I took the time to closely examine the offered copy. In terms of 6.0 grade it couldn't get better. I also don't recall ever seeing a copy listed on his site with MC and all the other usual defects. The vast majority offered have nice reds, glossy, nice registration, no MC etc. Kudos to him for that. So you mean to tell me 0.5 translated to 40K more ? Who was the seller of the "100K 6.5" ? all_things_comics ?
  2. This is the preRobin Detective thread mate. If you want all the latest info/discussions, I suggest you visit the AF15 threads in Silver. The last thing we need is yet another AF15 thread, sorry.
  3. This is different. Steve Borock could grade very strictly, and as far as I know still knows how to do it. His standards prevented CGC from being stillborn as a joke, for which I and the rest of the slab-collecting hobby should be eternally grateful. Unfortunately, it appears that he chose to compete with CGC by not grading as strictly, which really made no sense to me, because CGC's grading standards (which he set) are what made them legitimate in collectors' minds to start with. If he had graded on same standard (didn't have to be tighter) and competed by offering faster turnaround/better service, rather than competing on inflated grades, he could've offered some real competition. As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a good first impression.
  4. Just saw this on ComicLink Tec 38 anyone ?
  5. as per Heritage description: This is the single highest-graded copy. This artistically accomplished, professionally restored comic book is the product of many hours of intricate artisanship, once unseen on the vintage comic book market. As recently as 2015, extensively restored comic books seldom received grades above 9.0. Higher grades are now seen on the market. Could CGC have started accepting stuff from the Meyers again ? They probably could if the Meyers worked their art but not to the point of exaggeration. Looks like they found that balance.
  6. Those were their first tryouts before they took things to the next level.
  7. Again, how can parts from one book joined to another be considered 'Conservation'
  8. Most of it is mentioned by the Meyers themselves in the link Dean supplied (starting page 10)
  9. Congratulations to all the winners and a BIG THANKS to @DR.X for his fun contest. For some of us that don't venture all that much anymore into Comics General, it is an occasion to get silly and have some fun. See you all next year.
  10. To the general collector out there that does not know of this forum, they were oblivious to the story of the Meyers and their techniques. When the first books started surfacing they actually had good sales results. Metro featured them in their auctions. They were a novelty. GA and SA super keys grading 9.4 some even in 9.6. No one had really seen any restored books look so pristine and grade so high before. Plus CBCS was new to the game, opinions hadn't been formed yet. Then more and more copies started showing up, in even higher grades. People stopped showing as much interest and prices took a hit.Today the general collector does not care for these books anymore and those that bought them can't get rid of them, even at rock bottom prices.
  11. I don't own an AF15 nor do I intend to, but if I did who is to stop me from listing it on ebay with a 1Mil BIN ? No one. Cause ... eBay. Where overpriced listings rule the day.
  12. Your conclusion is very perceptive. I honestly think these books would NOT have caught on, even if there had been a loving relationship between the Meyers and CGC/CCS.
  13. can't make out her name ? looks like she signed the photo with her feet.
  14. Only 1 dude posted the after the UFO !? Everyone must be stuck on those goddam nails.
  15. +1 In full agreement with you here. From my own personal point of view, once you get into adding things such as a married cover or pieces added, you've crossed well beyond the restoration threshold line. +2 C'mon CGC. Seriously !? Married bc "Conserved" What's next ? Trim ?
