  1. Your call, but I would point out that Rae himself had a heavy presence on those threads about him that featured on this art forum. His own input to these threads pretty much damned him by his own words/responses. As such, all first hand, not hearsay.

Personally, if it stops someone from getting scammed to the tune of 20k on a lightboxed Steranko (or lesser-priced phony Kirbys), I would have no hesitation chiming in with appropriate warnings to fellow collectors.

Even if you didn't want to personally engage Rae, maybe a few links to various threads wouldn't have gone amiss. 2c

Heck, point me in the direction of the FB group and I'll do it myself.

  2. I agree with the poster who suggested that a light-boxed (inked) copy would have been the better option. That would have provided two pieces of OA that would have looked neat displayed side-by-side.

As a matter of interest, has anyone ever come across the later BWS Conan art that was published from original pencils only? Would love to see how the OA looks (and, no, if anyone here owns any of those pages, PLEASE do not get them inked!).

  3. Thanks for the kind comments! Terry, I can see how your catalog posts from a few years ago were a total labor of love. It's interesting to learn about the Frazetta Sweet Adeline strip. Here is the strip in the current Heritage auction:

    Best, Lee

Okay, I dug out the page with the other Sweet Adeline tryout strip I mentioned. Although no actual title is given, comparison to the Heritage offering makes it fairly conclusive that it's the same character.

This one was offered in Russ Cochran's Comic Art Auction # 15 (October 1983), and sold for $475.

The scan is from the whole catalog page, so you get an Alex Raymond illustration in addition to the Adeline strip.

  4. Sorry to hear this.

Was a big fan during the 1960s of Dan's work for Space Family Robinson (Lost in Space).

Within recent years, I bought 5 pages of art from Space Family Robinson # 1 via Dan's agent Dave Karlen (all up in my CAF).

On a trip to Los Angeles a couple of years ago I met-up with an old friend who owns most of the other pages from the remainder of that very first book. He bought those directly from Dan.

Interestingly, Dan seemed to have retained all the OA from # 1, yet the vast majority of pages from the issues that followed are not known to exist.

    R.I.P.

  5. Seems like a number of people feel the Cap #68 cover will go 65-72K... I was thinking (in my uneducated opinion) much less. Hard to guess in the sense that not much like it pops up.

That's easily my favorite piece in the whole auction. A historic find. I love that era of the book, and Syd Shores did amazing work on many covers and splashes during that time (although this doesn't look like his work).

As rare as GA Cap covers are, and even though (last I checked) Supes, Bats, and Cap were the 3 hottest heroes for GA comic collectors... how many avid GA collectors also go after OA? (I really don't have an idea). I'm wondering if this one will be fought over by a couple bigger GA comic dealers who aren't hardcore into OA.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the Cap cover end up in Jim Halperin's awesome collection (would make a great companion piece to his GA Schomburg Human Torch cover).

Not really interested in playing guessing games (anyways, like Vodou, most of the listed items are outside of my sphere of interest), though I wouldn't be surprised to see this rare gem hammer a lot higher than 65 - 72K. 2c

Another thing I've noticed is that not everyone who advocates 'comic art only' is a paid-up CAF premium member.

Nothing wrong with using CAF as a free member, I hasten to add, but if you love it so much and want your suggestions listened to and acted upon, it might aid your cause if you actually contributed something towards the site's upkeep. 2c

  7.

Well, the most common criticisms that have been leveled in this thread against modern art are more relevant to Big Two than indie. The issue with word balloons is remedied with an overlay. No different than a vintage page you buy that's missing the word balloons. Want them back on there? Get an overlay made.

    up for it!)

Felix, as (I believe) a successful modern art rep, do you think that linking-up with someone capable of providing overlays of the missing text elements of caption/speech balloon material, you could offer an additional option (at a suitable mark-up in price) of selling such art rendered complete via overlays?

I'm inclined to believe this idea could be worth exploring?

Just a suggestion that might save potentially interested buyers the hassle of getting this done themselves post-purchase.

  8. Traded artwork with Ethan during the mid-1990s. Pre-internet days for me and negotiating involved weeks and weeks of snail-mail exchanges between the UK and the USA.

Still have a checklist of Ethan's collection he sent me. A large and impressive selection!
