  1. Fantastic Four Annual #3.

It was my older brother's and I just loved the cover. It was about 5 years after it was published and I was 5 or 6 at the time.

Unfortunately I took a pair of scissors to it and cut out all of the characters inside so I could play with them.

It took me more than 30 years to get a replacement copy.

Thats just a great cover (worship)

  2. I think it's really sad that the days of going into a dingy newsagent and finding a pile of cheap, random comics (or even better a spinner rack) are long gone. I used to pounce on that stuff and the excitement of going through those colourful pamphlets, trying to decide which to buy and which to regretfully leave behind due to limited funds was truly palpable.

I know I sound like a :preach: but as someone else said earlier, that really was a golden age. :cloud9:

Oh and I definitely have those 100 pagers to thank for my love of comics. :cloud9:

    Couldn't agree more!

I forgot before my introduction to "hero" comics I used to have Whizzer and Chips bought for me by grandad. :cloud9:

  3. Might have been, it was so long ago and i was only 11 at the time

It was a very significant show in British fandom history, but because of its location it lost money, and it was never brought back. But it did get a lot more people into U.S. comics.

This raises a question to my fellow UK'ites.

    What got you into comics?

For me it was Batman (1989) that got me into mainstream DC. Upto then the only comic I read was UK Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lol

Although the OCD collecting bug hit me with trading cards. I still have them in a folder in the loft somewhere hm

Annual caravan holidays on the South Wales coast...you could pretty much guarantee it would rain for three or four days at a stretch. The local newsagent stocked DC and Marvel comics so it was something to read when waiting for the sun to make an appearance.

Would always look out for the following:

DC: Superman, Batman, Green Lantern and The Justice League of America.

Marvel: X-Men, Avengers, Defenders and The Invaders.

    Happy memories!

  4. Still haven't got my books yet. :sorry: according to Chandler it's a hundred working days for economy tier, so it's gonna be about another month.

My own fault, for going economy.

Just had message from Sharon and she said my economy books hadn't been graded yet and could be another 2 months! Oh well it's only been 4 months so far, half a year seems like a reasonable turnaround for the money it cost to get the books graded.

    That's getting beyond the pale.

The serious question is would we put up with that type of service when it comes to other aspects of our day to day life?

A result of having a captive market perhaps?

  5. Am I Corbett or Barker?

    Guess.

I think I'm more John Cleese.

That's not a compliment you've given yourself there.

I think you're more Harold Lloyd.

Harold Lloyd was an absolute genius, so you may be right.

    The resemblance is uncanny.

For folks who may not be up to speed with the "comic genius" Harold lloyd

  6. Being a bottom feeder as Andy so eloquently puts it I think Marts are the way to go.

Pile em high and sell em cheap to the mostly smelly people. Self not included of course. (tsk)

I never said they were smelly. ;)

I guess the remark was a bit unfair, but customers these days at the Royal National just don't seem to be spending, which is understandable given the current situation. I've got 20 - 30 long boxes of 50p / £1 comics, but I'm too lazy to take them to shows.

You didn't have to we could smell them :)

I think most people's spending habits have had to change. It's only a lucky few that can spend big on their hobby these days.

That said I'm a big fan of the 50p/£1 boxes as you can pick up some good reads that you wouldn't have otherwise.

If the price is right most comics will shift at a mart.

Definitely. There are as many people turning up at the National as ever, so the traffic (and the turnover) is still decent.

It's been a while since I've made a trek down to the National. Will probably check it out agin when fellow boarders have a table. Chance to pick up the odd bargain and give moral support while they dealt with the great unwashed hordes.

  8. Is it worth electing someone as a mod or whatever title, for the pm thread to rule on any issues that arise?

I'm not sure if it would be necessary, majority vote may be sufficient for any issues. What does everyone else think?

I think we are all good people here that a mod is not needed

    I agree :)

  9. From what I understand (happy to be corrected) it wouldn't be appropriate to try and get someone put on the probation list for being a bit rubbish at communicating, and not giving an accurate estimate of shipping times. So there is no way to make other buyers aware - and that just seems a bit strange to me given that we're supposed to be the guardians of the comic collecting community or whatever.

It wouldn't be fair to put someone on probation if you get the books within the allotted timeframe. They may be at communicating but you'll get that in any aspect of life. I've waited months for books I've bought on here from all kinds of sellers, I generally just waited it out and all came good in the end. I'm not saying that's the case in this situation as I've never heard of the seller, but the way I see it if you get your books within 30 days all is good by the Sales rules. If you don't you take it to probation and presumably get your money back. Nothing lost in either instance.

Nothing's ever going to be perfect, and nine times out of ten a little patience will see you through. Again, I'm not defending this particular transaction as the communication does look slack, but to hang someone up because they don't communicate even if they've sent the goods is a bit steep.

If eBay worked like that there'd be way more negs left than positives.

eBay does work like this - you can give someone a positive because you received the book you asked for within the stated timeline, but still mark them down on comms in the detailed star ratings. That's a good compromise between saying nothing on one hand and going over the top (i.e. leaving a neg) on the other - there's no equivalent to that halfway house on the boards.

I agree completely with what you said - it would not be fair to put someone on probation for slack comms. I also agree that sometimes you just have to suck it up.

The main thing is that ArsenalHerd gets the book! I'm sure all the rest of it will be quickly forgotten once he has his hands on it.

Maybe I am a hardass, but if seller is not communicating, then others should know and therefore his or her poor performance expressed on the probation thread. I htink we are being overly kind as this is a good community - to better the community would be to notify someone of their flaws so in the future they rectify it. Don't you think? (shrug) So don't slam the guy or gal (especially if you get your book), but give a 'neg on communication'

  10. It was a big sales thread with a few people buying and he has been on here 5 years, in way of not replying to PMs there is no excuse as he has been on the board posting so he must have seen them

For me the main issue is the lack of communication, add in the fact the seller seems reluctant to supply the tracking number. It's not a good advertistment for the seller in my book - hope it all works out ok :wishluck:

  11. Does anyone have a comprehensive list of the UK on-line comic shops?

Google is a nightmare as some that I know of like Wolf Comics just don't show up, which leads me to believe that heaps that I'm unaware of will also not be showing up.

    Thanks :)

I'm an online comic shop that's not online yet. :tonofbricks:

    You need a... :makepoint:

    No more like :makepoint::makepoint::makepoint:

C'mon Gaz before I end up looking like this :preach:;)

  12. In other news....

The English F.A have confirmed that Duran Duran are to release Englands Euro 2012 song. 'His Name Is Rio And He Watches From The Stand'

    Funny.

I really feel sorry for Rio though. Not because I think he should have gone, but because I don't buy the injury explanation. To me, it seems clear that he's been left out because of the potential conflict between him and Terry (who I think is a reprehensible little turd).

It's so misguided too - it's not like the people who support Rio are going to be thinking "Oh well, no problems, since he's not actually physically here I'm going to be JT's best mate".

Hodgson has really missed a trick in my view - this was a great opportunity to clear the decks and blood some new talent a couple of years in advance of the next World Cup, at a time when expectations are probably at a 20 year low. Including Lampard, Gerard, Terry, Barry as probable starters, and like Downing has blown that. Oh well.

Got to agree with you on Ferdinand & Terry - I wouldn't have selected either of them for the squad as both of then come with to much baggage these days.

  13. No more King Kenny, good or bad decision?

Having just had the worst league season in over 5 years I can't see how anyone would think it was a bad decision (shrug)

I'm a Liverpool supporter (of sorts) and it's sad to see "King Kenny" go but the League cup and 8th in the league is a poor return on the money put into the club. Add in the Suarez incident and I can see why they felt changes had to be made :(

  14. Ronnie does it again. No late night finish at the Crucible this time though.

    Glad that he won.

+1 - let's hope he continues for a couple more years

Just heard on the radio that "The Rocket" will now be taking a six month break from Snooker....Hendry or Davies in their pomp would never have thought about doing that.

  15. Yep, Nick's grading is as good as it gets. I noticed at the London Con that he still uses the old Stateside/Comicana labels which give detailed descriptions of the book and point out specific faults with the book.

When you buy from him, you know exactly what you are getting and that the grading will be spot on or even somewhat generous.

+1 you won't go wrong buying from nick, he's a nice guy as well

..... and he's good company to go drinking with. :applause:

Garry here is also someone you can't go wrong buying your books from and im really excited about his new site. Iv bought from Garry and couldn't be anything but happy, he's also a great guy and most welcoming of boardies! Certainly made my 1st weeks on the boards top notch (thumbs u

    Aw shucks.

You've been a pleasure to deal with and to chat with yourself, Jamie. Glad you found your to the Boards, mate. :headbang:

Now if only I could find more more than a few minutes here and there to work on my website....... :juggle:

    Garry,

Come on get your finger out... :baiting::kidaround:
