  1. So, a question for the thread, here. My LCS has a complete set of Watchmen that they're selling as a set, all CGC 9.6. They're asking $475. I'm wondering what people think of that price for the run given that they're all 9.6, not 9.8.
  2. Today's book. Not that I'll need it for the Reading Club for a while yet:
  3. In today. This gives me the complete run of Uncle Scrooge issues by Carl Barks. Four Color 386, 456, and 495; then Uncle Scrooge 4-66, 68-71, and 216, plus Uncle Scrooge Adventures 33. I've also got most of the other books that have Barks stories where Scrooge is the headlining character. This included Four Color 1025 (Vacation in Disneyland), and the Dell Giants Uncle Scrooge Goes to Disneyland, Disneyland Birthday Party, Mickey Mouse Almanac, and Walt Disney Summer Fun #2. As far as I know, the only one I'm missing where the Feature is Uncle Scrooge is Donald Duck #81, which apparently has a 1-page Uncle Scrooge story that I just found out about today. Does anybody know of any others? Now I've just got the larger project of all the Barks stories where Uncle Scrooge is a co-star but not the feature headliner. At least I've got Four Color 178 already. I'll try and get a group shot later this week.
  4. Reminds me of a mini con at the local mall in the 90's. Was flipping through one seller's books, since he was one of the only dealers with any silver age. But he had everything priced at about double what it should be. So I didn't point out the small Brave & the Bold at the top of the "Justice League" #29 I came across. Long gone now, but I made a decent profit on it. Wish I still had the book.
  5. Just because I feel like this cover doesn't get posted here enough, here's my copy again. Also a 1st:
  6. Today's book. They used a really heavy paper stock on this one; it's close to an inch thick.
  7. I do not; one of these days I need to really dive in and get the rest of the Sugar & Spike issues. I do have a complete run of the Scribbly solo series, though.
  8. We shall see. I just ordered the last issue, so maybe in a week or so.
  9. A few finds today. The Savage Pelliucidar may be a 3rd, but the cover is so white it practically glows.
  10. Found in the wild today. I would describe this one as at the very bottom of the A-list Lovecraft Arkham House books, but with the first publication of two revisions it's on the A-list, I think:
  11. Creepy 30 thoughts: Cover: Bill Hughes only does three covers for the Warren comics. This is easily the least of his three efforts, although I actually suspect editorial meddling of some sort may have been involved. If you look closely, it appears the monster is wearing a helmet, and if that's not actually part of the monster the image works better. But it's colored to match the monster, and I wonder if Hughes was required to change it from a more silver shade that makes its nature more obvious. Loathsome Lore: Is this Sutton's first -script, as well as art? I can't remember for sure. It's definitely one of the better lore pages we've had in a while. Letters: They discuss the price jump; given the increase in new content I have to believe them here that they were actually pumping most of the extra money right back into the books. The Mind of the Monster: R. Michael Rosen is a new writer who's around for a while; he doesn't seem to have comics for publishers other than Warren. This is a very good debut, with Colon back on track art-wise after the rushed seeming job on the Vampi #1. Drop In: A nicely moody story by Glut & Sutton; but the twist at the end comes rather out of nowhere. They mention LA by name plenty in the story; if they had just dropped its nickname once or twice before Uncle Creepy's outro the twist would have played much better. To Be or Not To Be a Witch: One of the best scripts we've seen from Parente, actually. Solid plotting without the gaps at the scripting level typical of his work, with extremely good art by Carlos Prunes, making what seems to be his only Warren appearance here. Fan Club: Bill Black (credited here as Bill Schwartz) makes his Warren debut; he'll turn up a few more times very soon now. Dr. Jekyll's Jest: I decline to review this story; naming a villain after a major religion for no clear reason is simply unacceptable. I'm prepared to grant that the writer and editor did it out of ignorance, but this isn't getting my time otherwise. Reprints: They're all good pieces, but 3 in one issue is pushing it in the rebuilding era. Easy Way to a Tuff Surfboard count: 7 Similar to the Vampirella 1 last week, this is an issue of two parts. There's a trio of excellent new stories here, but the high number of reprints and the unforced error on the last story make it hard to give the issue as a whole that high a grade.
  12. Gold, 7.0 or within one point of highest known copy. Silver, 8.5. Bronze, 9.0. Copper, 9.4. Modern, 9.8.
  13. The only time I got an Arkham House in original shrinkwrap, I opened it instantly and got a broadart for it.
  14. 5.0 seems very generous, to say the least, with the paper loss on the cover. But it looks so sharp other than that, and given that the paper loss doesn't affect the main image, I can just about see the grade. But if it wasn't slabbed I would probably call it a lower technical grade that presents much higher overall. So I would ask or pay a 5.0 price if buying or selling it for myself.
  15. Call of Cthulhu. Any of the four would be awesome, but that's the one that's most interesting to me.
  16. In today. Only one more Barks Uncle Scrooge issue for me to go:
  17. A nice scattering of books from the local store today. Jones and Steranko are always nice to see:
  18. Today's book. I think I may have a copy in storage somewhere, but this was cheap and I'm pretty sure it's a much nicer copy anyway. Although my OCD hates that Avon, not Ace, did the Second Foundation paperback completing the original trilogy:
