  1. I know Erik Larsen is famous for his work on Savage Dragon, but his latest efforts on Spawn are absolutely embarrassing in my honest opinion.

I wasn't a big fan of Jonboy Meyer's art either. Looked too cartoon-ish.

But Jonboy was supposed to be the head artist on the series. Why did he only last 3 or 4 issues? Do you happen to know why he got the can?

The title is clearly in free-fall. It's a jumbled mess with no clear direction. Things were stable when Kudranski was at the helm.

I'm also not a fan of the whole Venom symbiote rip-off look - Spawn with fangs, claws, and a 4-foot tongue just looks stupid. doh!

I know that McFarlane is determined to make it to at least issue 300, but it's been garbage for too long now. It seems like he is going through the motions.

HOWEVER, the variant covers by Sandonoval have been EXCELLENT!

PS - those shadowboxes are awesome! I am a huge fan of the old Atari artwork.

  2. Since we're on the subject, can anybody recommend a fire proof filing cabinet that can store slabs in it?

    :gossip: Two words. Rusty staples

Maybe, maybe not. Mine have been in a fire proof safe for 5 years with no signs whatsoever of anything like that. Of course, I regularly open the safe and have about 10 pounds of silicate crystals in the bottom of it.

Cool. It's something I'm still looking into and not really in a rush right now. If I did have a safe it would be opened regularly in a climate controlled area. It's just the thought of losing another collection to a disaster such as a fire again makes me shutter.

I think we are all afraid of that.

But keep in mind that your comics would likely perish even inside of a fire-proof safe. After 30 minutes or so, the heat alone would do a number on your comics, even if they were encapsulated or bagged.

  3. I just noticed this cover on CLink, it's up for the May auction:

Interesting to see the market value of that piece. On HA only two Capullo Spawn covers have been sold - the last one was this one - sold in 2012 for 4,2k:

    What did this go for?

  4. How about Spawn 185 sketch.

Yep. Good call. That definitely needs to be dropped into the Dirty Dozen. (thumbs u

I will update the list a little later.

Indeed, it used to be on my list to get, but I dropped it because I've never even seen one online evar.

Here is a copy of mine. Barring some financial catastrophe, I will never sell.

I was just about to post that one...

Only 60-90 copies in the wild and the last few sales of graded 9.8s have topped out at well past $3K. Only seven copies at 9.8 on the census and that number has stayed the same for years. I think all the copies in great shape have already been graded so we're not likely to see anymore.

Rarely comes up for sale and when it does it's usually raw and around the fine to very fine range.

  6. You don't want your book right now believe me, you want them to fix the problem before you get yours sent out. The 9 I just received are simply horrendous. I think the delay may be in that they are trying to figure out how to correct the problem

Only way to fix it is to re-write the laws of physics.

    Or use different materials.

    Or re-design the case.

Or just ignore it as long as possible.

I wonder which one they will end up doing? hm

    lol

  7. I think part of the reason people's jaws are dropping is that many fans from the 90s know him as the guy who took over drawing Spawn when McFarlane left. Fair or not, he gets lumped in with Klaus Janson (DD), Erik Larsen (ASM), Art Thibert, Whilce Portico (X-Men), Sal Buscema (Thor) as 'replacement artists' fans got stuck with after the fan-favorite left a historic run (Miller, McFarlane, Lee, Simonson)

This is true, but as a huge Spawn fan, I will say that Capullo eventually established himself as THE artist of the title. His level of ability took off like a rocketship during his run.

You have to remember that McFarlane, with the exception of inking and penciling a few covers here and there, pretty much gave up after issue 15. Then it was Capullo's ship.

I don't see how anyone could knock his work. Anyone who says that Jim Lee or David Finch or Marc Silverstri blow him away...I just don't see that at all. They are all excellent artists with a ton of talent, skill, and ability.

  8. it stinks the ive been graded so long and paid for a service youre not getting. had i of known i would have taken a slower service and saved the money.

Let me tell you about turnaround times during the summer of 2012...

    :preach:

    No kidding!

Things are light years better than they were. lol

  10. I've been using these bags for a few years now and have been very pleased with them:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/15-CGC-CRYSTAL-CLEAR-1-6-MIL-RESEALABLE-DISPLAY-BAGS-FREE-SHIP-LIKE-MYLAR-/251309388008?hash=item3a8334f0e8:g:DogAAMXQySpROB1q

They also fit the new cases just fine.

(Also, I'm not shilling for anyone. I'm not sure if this particular seller is the manufacturer or even the only guy selling these bags, but he is the one I've always bought from.)

You can find the exact same bags direct from the dealer and save a TON of money. You can either spend nearly a dollar a piece from the dealer on eBay or 14 cents a piece from the factory. Seems like a no-brainer to me!

    Thanks.

Are these these Mylite-esque* or are they polybags?

    * I know they are not Mylite bags as gerber holds the patent...but are they a close facsimile?

They are polybags, made from 1.6 mil polypropylene, just like the ones sold by the eBay merchant mentioned above. It's the exact same bag.

HOTFLIPS sells bags made from the same material. The difference is that the bags sold by Hotflips are thicker at 2.5 mil. But it's the same stuff.

No they are not Mylites. Not even "Mylite-esque." Polypropylene isn't a bad storage material - it's acid free. But it's not in the same ballpark as Mylar.

I think that Mylar bags for graded comics are overkill anyway. The poly bags are affordable and get the job done. Save the Mylar for your raw goodies.
