The plastic on the inner well is bent in several places on the corners like it was folded. I don't see how the inner case could be bent after encapsulation. Is it possible CGC encapsulated it with the inner well corners bent?
As far as the grade, it isn't the worst 9.8 I've ever seen. There are a couple small color breaking spine ticks. I can post scans once I get home.

I recently bought this New Mutants #98 CGC 9.8 on eBay.
The label clearly looks like it's been tampered with. The inner plastic around the label on the inside of the case looks like it was pealed back and bent. The plastic pins along the top of the case also look like they've been popped.
Has anyone else seen this type of tampering before?
Is there a way I can report this seller to CGC? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Beautiful colors and spot on centering. Staples clean and tight. Centerfold tight. Still has nice gloss.
Has some light foxing on the front cover left edge. Light foxing all around the back cover. It looks like water was wiped off in the area between caps face and shield. A half-inch crinkle is between cap's nose and falcon's hand.
Overall sturdy and attractive book.
I'll take it per pm

It has been the honeymoon phase for the last several years, but this is the comic book community I remember.
Advice for the newbies: don't argue with the old sharks. These are the people that will scam a comic book from a twelve year old if it makes them a couple bucks.
They aren't interested in giving you helpful advice. They don't want you to learn. They want you paying them to press your books.
They like you as long as they are making money off of you.

CGC doesn't adhere to Overstreet standards, never have. In fact Overstreet has changed some of their standards because of CGC.
I agree and it's a valid point.
But has CGC ever given their standard?
Because lately it seems like it's really changed from what I have expected for over a decade.

That's what a spine tick is.
I was under the impression a spine tick is an indent (or impression) along the spine that doesn't break color.

It’s a spine tic. Completely allowed in 9.8
It is not a spine tick. It is a color breaking spine tick. Can you please provide the grading standard that states color breaking spine ticks/stresses are allowed in 9.8's? I'm not familiar with it.
Overstreet which has been around a lot longer than CGC clearly states it is not allowed for a 9.8. Actually, color breaking spine stresses aren't even allowed in 9.6's.
CGC deliberately doesn't give clear guidance on their grading standards so they can get away with this. I bet you if I cracked this slab and submitted in 10 times it wouldn't get a 9.8. It only got a 9.8 because of the submitter. One of CGC's largest customers.

I recently bought a 9.8 from one of the biggest sellers of graded comics on eBay.
The book is not a 9.8. It has a huge color break along the spine. Very disappointing.
So, I started looking at this seller's 9.8 books. This seller is selling so many books that are graded 9.8 that aren't 9.8's!
I realize this is probably one of CGC's biggest customers, but are we supposed to still pretend that CGC doesn't have a bias?

Thank you all for the great replies!
I appreciate all of the assistance.

The top staple of the book is missing half of the staple, because it looks like it broke off.
How does this affect the grade of the book? Is the book considered incomplete?
I've attached a picture of the bottom staple, which is complete, and a picture of the top staple which is broken.
I've never seen this before and any help would be appreciated.

Does any have any suggestions of a heavy duty shelving rack that can fit about 25 short boxes?
I've been having a hard time finding something that will handle all the weight.

I don't want to buy it. I'm concerned these are being circulated.

I've never seen this before, so maybe they aren't new, but I've noticed reproduction comics that look very real (at least from the pictures).
Are these as good as they look in the pictures? Is this a serious concern for the industry?

Thank you for the reply.
Do you believe spin stress lines that do not break color, that are not visible from the front and back cover, and are visible only if look at the book horizontally, would stop you from receiving a 9.8?
Another CGC scammer?

The seller also posted pics which avoided showing the bent inner well corners.
