His name is Angel, I think. He got a hair cut once but didn't seem to like it. I have grandchildren like that.
Yup, Angel. One of comics' all-time most perfectly best realized characters. And that spread is ridonkulous, thanks for posting!

Sadly I think not. All the comics in that picture were burnt. This picture was staged by some local town or other as a prelude to one of the burnings. The kids in this pic may have secretly admired the comic books but they were under intense pressure at the time from schools, religious organizations, parents etc. to demonstrate their dislike and disdain for the comic book...at least the so called 'good kids' were.
Yeah, and I don't think for one minute the kids bought the idea that comics were "bad". I imagine they were bent over double by wanting to be "good kids" and loving those books that ended up on the bonfires.

Snips, snails, puppy dog's tails, that's what comic books are made of.

Especially since the photos are proudly hosted on photo bucket!

This is absolutely delicious. Kudos kid on your "I'll send your bill later suckers" - it's actually pretty perfect as dialog graffitti.

So after 200+ pages, what's the answer to the original question. What ARE the rarest romance comics?

Amazing picture and great research - thanks! Wonder where the DC's are...

Rally Rd. is a new service that lets people invest in expensive classic cars.
Could it work for comics?

Picked up the first year (1957) of On Stage by Leonard Starr. Sort of romance - definitely soap opera. Thought I'd post a few strips here, just for you romantic types.
First Sunday:
Secretary's knowing look in second last panel is just perfect!
Tears, overcoats and walking across the tarmac in a snowfall. Beautiful 1950's style heartbreak.

@tv horror is this a good movie ? i am not sure if i have ever known it to be on tv here in the states....
Yes! It's a terrific movie, rich in atmosphere and beautifully directed by Val Guest (Day the Earth Caught Fire, Quatermass Experiment etc.).
Of course, this is the definitive abominable snowman.

Those aren't by Jack Cole.

1951 post-Eisner Spirit section.
And on the back, a Clifford by Eugene Bilbrew, who took over the strip after Jules Feiffer was drafted. Bilbrew is best known for his fetish art for sleazy pulps of the era.
Here's an interesting article about Bilbrew: A long-lost artist of the 1950's sexual underground

And in this week, a trio of Doc Savage digests. The last one is the first of the brief run where they rebranded the book as "Doc Savage Science Detective".
Unlike the Shadow, where the Bruce Elliot Shadow stories are at best poorly regarded, I think the last 2-3 years of Doc Savage it was really an excellent magazine, with some of the best Doc Savage stories Lester Dent ever did. And there's a lot of good backup stories, most notably a lot by John D. MacDonald, one of my favorite writers.
Always like to see what you're adding to your pretty amazing collection. Where are you getting all these - eBay?

That is a beautifully white Cap 111. I'm still looking for one that dazzling.

Does anyone know what goody is buried in this otherwise obscure 50's issue of Esquire?
