I wish I had an old overstreet at my fingertips. I used to buy these for nostalgic reasons from probably 2001-2008. Carnage was certainly big when he first came out. If there was hype before he came out, other than the cameos, I missed that. But 361 1st print was in steady demand for several years after coming out. After that, however, with the comics crash and all, a lot of the demand for books like that just wasn't there anymore. Around the same time 361 was a dollar book, I finally splurged on Amazing Spider-Man 129 and 300 for $25 and $20, respectively. Values were different then, and the meteoric rise of many of these books was meteoric from somewhere.

What area are you from that ASM 361 was a $1 and ASM 129 was $25, I was collecting and attending plenty of cons in that 2001-2008 range I remember the 361 dropping to 10$ - 15$ on like 2/20 deals but never even to $5 regularly. And ASM 129 was never under $75-$100 during that era in my memory. Again that is in the NJ,NY,Philly, Baltimore con area so it could be regional.

One caveat, you can hit on anything in a random dollar box, I have had some great scores over the years from BA 12 to ASM 252 to FF 112 but I would never say those were 1$ or 2$ books.

  2. Thanks for all of the replies so far. Some great points that I had not thought of - the water towers for Spidey artists is one that is so obvious but I never thought of. I looked through a copy of Web 122 and I don't think that it is Butler based on some indicators in the form and how the mask is drawn, and the feet as noted in this thread. Another thing that was spot on is the damage was caused by double sided foam that connected the piece to a red and blue mat. The piece in front of it was a con commision from what appears to be a local artist that I will add below, I don't know how much that helps as some of the other pieces had stacked art as well from different artists and different years in one mat. I contacted the seller but have not heard back as of yet. I looked everywhere on it for some sort of signature or mark to get a lead but I don't see anything.Thank you for all of the great insight and I will keep digging for some answers.

  3. I picked up a few Spidey pieces at auction and behind one of the framed pieces I found what is indicated as Web of Spiderman 122 pg 1 - unsigned on Marvel board. It is clearly not the published page but maybe a rejected page / unpublished piece. The edges are in rough condition but the piece itself is rather nice aside from a bit wonky thwip hand on the Scarlet Spider which may be why it was redone. Any help on how I can figure out what this is and who the artist might be? Web 122 had Steven Butler - Breakdowns and Randy Eberlin - Finishes listed as the contributors so I would guess it is one of them if it is legit.  Thanks in advance!

  4. I enjoyed the Miles Morales: Spider-Man series and the Spider-Men with Peter was also a fun read - I think the idea that it’s a high school Spider-Man grappling with the same things Spidey did in the 60’s gets at what makes the character popular.
I think that’s why I enjoy Tom Holland’s version of Spider-Man the most out of the movies he sells it as a HS kid from NYC. The Miles movie was one of the best Marvel movies made (IMO) so that does do something to boost the character as well. Remember the cartoons are out there and popular which is building the audience. Remember Wolverine got a huge boost from the cartoons and introduced him to a new generation. Harley is popular almost exclusively because of the cartoons.
Out of the newer big 2 characters I really do think Miles Morales has some staying power.
