Bronze Age Horror (mainly provided from DC) is my favorite genre, as it naturally stemmed from my fascination with classic Horror movies.
It's a Friday night. I pour butter into a pan and then some popcorn?(I didn't have a microwave yet). I shiver in anticipation as I hear the host of my favorite weekly show called Creature Feature, which showcases horror movies from the classics in the 1930s up to B-type thrillers in the 1970s.
My fascination with horror and mystery origins can be found in some of these late night movie romps. This interest led from movies into magazines about horror movies (Warren comes to mind) and eventually comic books. Even my superhero books had mystery themes, especially in the 1970s, such as one of Batman's nemesis, The Spook.
My main interest during my younger years primarily consisted of DC Bronze Age horror?which included Ghosts, Secrets of Haunted House, Unexpected, House of Mystery, and Weird War Tales. These tales of macabre and mystery kept me reading into the long hours of the night. I especially liked Luis Dominguez covers, as they were dominant during this time frame.
By the time my collecting focus waned in 1984, I quietly tucked away my books, where they would travel with me for over 20 years, waiting for their time to be rediscovered. One spring day in 2001, my son Nathan asked to see the comics I had stashed away in the closet. I fell in love with comics again, and this time, things were different.
During my childhood, finding back issues was challenging. Now, it has become child's play with the boon of the Internet and online comic stores that can make purchasing a mere click away. eBay has made it very easy to locate and find issues, but I was more or less disappointed with the grades I would receive. Enter CGC.
I created a plan to start collecting DC Bronze Age horror of all of my favorites, with my key focus being House of Mystery. This title was my absolute favorite due to the great artists and stories and for its consistent quality.
Most of my early issues from the series were purchased from Pacific Coast comics. The PC copies are truly remarkable, and showcase these books in a light I've rarely seen with vivid colors and perfect registration. Among my favorite PC copies include the Neal Adams cover on #177 (but to be honest, I love them all). Some of these early copies are still relatively difficult to find in 9.4 or higher, although copies graded 9.0 or lower are usually not too hard to find.
In terms of the best story and art, I would have to vote for #186. With a Neal Adams cover cover and interior art by both Wrightson and Adams, it's easily one of the classic issues in the series.
Another highlight of the series for me is the 100-pagers, which consists of #224-#229. Although these stories contained many reprints from the earlier House of Mystery issues, finding these in high grade can be challenging and fun. I love the Cain cover on #226, illustrated by Dominguez. In addition to the 100 pagers, I find the Dollar Comics in the series #251-#259 difficult to find in high grade due to the bindery defects on the spine of these bulky books.
Bernie Wrightson produced many great covers in the series. Issue #236 stands out as my personal favorite. Thanks to Greg Loey (CGC boards/ebay: greggy), I've been able to acquire this book in high grade.
Although late in the title, the "I, Vampire" series provided a monthly dose of vampire drama that proved to be very interesting. Unfortunately, the death of the series also marked the death of the title. I miss it so.
A thread on the CGC boards was started so fellow collectors can discuss Bronze Age horror. Go to the CGC boards and go to the Bronze section "Infinite Bronze Horror Thread".
Thanks to everyone on the boards who has helped to complete my collection and most of all to my wife Rebecca who has remained patient during my second childhood.

Recognition for a great bronze age horror set.
It's amazing that after 4+ years i've still not completed the set, although I would be real close were it not due to some stiff competition. I'd like to take a moment and thank those that I've met here and been able to share my love for the genre...it definitely makes it more fun to share.
Hopefully you guys can help me close the gap on missing issues so I can wrap the series up...I'd love to branch out in other areas but I'm the kind of guy that wants to "finish what he starts" before branching out. One exception is my interest in collecting Jonah Hex and Weird Western Tales...I love those westerns growing up.

Is there a struggle for horror comics to maintain its stellar selling records?
I've been collecting horror comics from a high grade perspective since 2001, and I've seen a lot of interesting things in the past few years.
First, when I started collecting, these books were for the most part ignored by the high grade collecting community. The introduction of CGC helped to bring collectors (like myself) to collect high grade copies of our favorite horror titles, but over the years I've noticed significant increases to these issues. Of course, the Wrightson and Adams covers bring the most notable and amazing prices to date. This has brought out yet more high grade copies, but unfortunately the market remains enough of a niche that the prices have now exceeded what the market will pay for them. There are exceptions, of course-House of Mystery continues and remains a flagship title for most horror collectors, and prices continue to edge out other DC titles such as House of Secrets. Abel never got his respect, although his title was pivotal in starting the legend of the Swamp Thing.
Secondly, a long time collector and competitor is now selling his horror collection. It is with mixed emotion that I say this, as I am now losing a friend that I've spent many a night discussing the genre. Although I will be able to accumulate more books for the collection, there is a gap here that will need to be filled with another collector. I'll miss you bud.
As I close this journal entry, it's clear that the market for these books are finite, and a delicate balance between price, availability, and demand must be reached. Although I suspect that prices will be falling in upcoming months, I am optimistic that the horror medium will continue to be strong in the long run. It's withstood the test of time, and I'm here to roll with the punches.

The CGC Registry Expansion of my favorite war title.
I was recently pleasently surprised when CGC expanded the Weird War Tales registry set to include all issues. The title provided a lot of fun reading for me growing up, and now I'm concentrating on a high grade run of the series.
Weird War Tales is my favorite war title as it blends in traditional horror elements with another very real horror: war. The occassional book length novels, killer Kubert and early Dominguez covers, and the internal art by Cruz, Talaoc and Evans (among others) with -script direction by Kanigher and Oleck provided some great moments in this DC anthology.
I'm currently about 60% complete once I register a ten book set I recently acquired. I'm also in the process of sending to CGC the later issues in the series...wish me luck.
If you have high grade issues that are missing from my set, please contact me. This is another set that I am hopeful of completing sometime in the next five years.

Hard to find issue in high grade...very nice price.
A great copy of Unexpected #118 CGC 9.4 White Pages went for a little over $150 on eBay, which I find amazing considering that many high grade collectors have been needing this issue and have complained on its difficulty in high grade. It also sports a very nice Neal Adams cover in a difficult black cover. Congratulations to the winner, because he got a great deal.
I've attached a pic of my copy, a 9.6 Oakland.

One of my top horror grails obtained
It's been no secret (no pun intended) that a fellow horror collector was selling off his collection in recent months. I've been drooling over his House of Secrets #81 CGC 9.4 Pacific Coast copy for years, as I think its the best example we have to date.
On the boards, we have looked over several 9.4s (there is another Pacific Coast 9.4) and all have more defects than what I prefer in a 9.4. This copy has only two noticeable defects-the upper left has a very minor impact and thus a soft corner, and there is one very faint color breaking crease in the upper right. The corners are all relatively sharp.
So, while I have purchased a significant number of comics from him, I was able to get first dibbs on this book. Granted, this wasn't cheap, but this issue is almost as hard to find as my remaining House of Mystery early issues-namely #175, #176, and #179.
My House of Secrets set is almost complete; there are later issues that I have to acquire. I hope I can have this set 100%complete within a year or two.
I modified this entry on 1/19/08 to reflect that I had re-holdered the book.

Bewitched with new Witching Hour additions.
Well, after four years of collecting this title, I moved from a paltry 45% to roughtly 75% with the acquisition of a collection from a fellow horror collector. It looks like this title is becoming more challenging than I initially thought...but I hope to have this being more or less wrapped up in a couple of years.
    Happy Haunting!

    -------------------------------------------
Wow! It doesn't seem like I've been collecting Bronze Age Horror comics for over four years, but I have. I've had lots of highs and lows, and I've had much success in upgrading many issues in my collection.
One of the things I've found is that you must realize that this is a marathon, and you can't sprint like this is a 100yard dash. Retrospectively, I used to find myself impatient in acquiring books because "they won't turn up again" only to see more around the corner. I've learned to be patient to ensure that I get the right book "at the right price".
Anyway, this is my status of completing most of my horror sets. Wish me luck...I think I can almost see the finish line from here.
    Snapshot 6/11/07:
    Black Magic (1973): 55%

Bronze Age collector gets sucked into great Zombie series.
A few years ago, I admit...I collected all of the Ultimate titles...but I didn't really enjoy or even read the titles. This time...it's different.
Thanks to the CGC Boards, I've been sucked into a popular series of Zombie survival. With all of the Zombie craze lately, you might think I'm referring to Marvel Zombies or some of the other short lived mini series. Nope, I'm talking about The Walking Dead...
In short, I purchased the TPBs and read them all within a couple of days, and I was hooked. It's very difficult waiting for the next issue but the current arc "No one is safe" is proving why this title is on the top of the charts.
As a result, I've started to colllect high grade examples of this series, and I recently snagged a #1. Because I'm not particularly a rabid fan of the Signature Series, I doubt I'll ever hold top spot in the Registry but it matters not.
If you haven't checked out this series, do it today! You will not be disappointed!

Keeping my sets in tip top order!
I will be busy modifying my registry text and updating pictures with my new scan technique. I'm not sure I'll be done before the CGC Registry Award judging begins, but it will be fun nonetheless.
If anyone has any issue I'm missing or in higher grade, please contact me for potential purchase. Thanks!

Upgrades and registry set fine tuning
I've recently upgraded many issues on my Ghosts registry set. Now only 5 issues remain: 1 (I sold my 9.4 because I want a 9.6 or better), 47, 50 (upgrade my 9.2), 57, 81.
I've recently uploaded all images to the registry set and made my descriptions easier to read. Hoping 2013 will be the year I can close this one out!
