Outstanding! Dane was lucky to have gotten the art back from Silver. There must be another stat heavy cover out there for #3 with the top finished.

Howard Chaykin American Flagg! #48 cover. Had to work overtime for a month to pay for it in 2002. But it did come already very nicely framed!

Nice job with the site! I've started building my Silverwolf collection, nothing close to complete though.

Most regular issues are fairly easy to find. You'll run into he most trouble with the Bulletins and Premier ashcans. They just aren't popular enough for people to bother listing for sale coupled with low print run equals tough to get.

Yeah I remember reading that Liefeld had worked there but wasn't sure if I had the comic or not. I have a pretty good but not quite complete Silverwolf collection.

 

I was like that with Aircel for a while. Anything Aircel, I was going after it. But I found the early issues are what I appreciated the most when it came to Elflord and Samurai. I probably could be convinced to go after Dragonring and Stark Future as well.

 

What's the best series from Silverwolf?

The main Silverwolf books were Grips (4 issues), Fat Ninja (5 issues), and Eradicators (4 issues). Now After that company folded Kris Silver restarted under the Greater Mercury Comics banner. GMC had a longer run with some titles making it over 10 issues. Most interest seems to come from Tim Vigil collectors since his early works appeared in a variety of different books under both companies.

Silverwolf was the first company to hire artist Rob Liefeld, though he never actually had any work published (he was hired to draw the first issue of Stech but he dropped out after finding other work and was replaced by Lorenzo Lizanna (later of Artline Studios).

 

But it looks like Liefeld left.

I realistically view that situation as both. He was hired and didn't do the job.

Silverwolf had a fair bit of talent early on for what they were.

Indeed: Ron Lim, Tim Vigil, Gary Amaro, and Phil Hester. And they hired and fired Rob Liefeld before he had anything published as well.

Everyone has to start somewhere.

Jack Caine (Dolph Lundgren) is a Houston vice cop who's forgotten the rule book. His self-appointed mission is to stop the drugs trade and the number one supplier Victor Manning. Along with F.B.I. agent Lawrence Smith, the two investigate a spate of mysterious deaths; normal non-junkies dying of massive heroin overdoses and bearing the same horrific puncture marks on the forehead. This, coupled with Caine's own evidence, indicates an alien force is present on the streets of Houston, killing and gathering stocks of a rare drug found only in the brain... Caine is used to fighting the toughest of criminals, but up to now they've all been human.

The white ashcans were heavily distributed in my area. Very little in this thread is rare or scarce. I prefer to say "less common".

What would your parameters be? A solid number like less than 500, 100, 50? Or something less academic.Along the lines of, "I've seen it. So that's not rare."

I will say I've been able to find some lower print run books easier than some moderately higher print run books at times. But that doesn't make them less scarce.

Graffiti Designs put out 3 signed and numbered hardcovers of Howard Chaykin's American Flagg! Only 2000 of each printed.

 

Valkyrie, Prisoner of the Past hardcover 2,250 signed/numbered on a plate by Chuck Dixon and Paul Gulacy. Put out by Eclipse in 1987. Doesn't seem terribly difficult to find despite the low number printed. Nice foil "V" logo stamp too.

Seems like collectible HC's weren't as big a thing back then. I know a handful existed. I imagine it was a send away deal in the back pages of a comic?

They were definitely a specialty item. Most companies just reprinted single issues over and over rather than collect them in a single volume. Probably easier to get people to drop $2 for a missing issue than $12 for a TPB or $20 for a HC. I know Graffiti Designs (the t-shirt people) put out some signed HCs. I have an American Flagg one I'll post tomorrow maybe and some more Eclipse HCs from 1990.

Hard Black Kiss signed/numbered hardcover limited to 666 copies by Howard Chaykin. Put out by Vortex in 1993(?). Nice gold foil lips stamp on the cover. Too bad the paper they used is newsprint. Anybody read the new series? Is it worth picking up?

The Tick Orange Ashcan Edition #1

Pre-dates The Tick Special Edition #1 in 1988.

Bob Polio photocopied and hand stapled 50 preview copies (8.5"x11"). 4 stayed with NEC, 18 went to distributors, 1 each to Ben Edlund, George Suarez, and Bob Polio. The remaining 25 were sold in 1996 signed and numbered by Polio and Suarez.

Getting the SilverWolf Index is a must. It was put out by GMC and has info about all the stuff published by SilverWolf like print runs etc.. That's where all the "placeholders" come from. But the printing is cheapo newsprint and the images are small so I don't know how much extra detail you'll get out of them.

 

Never seen any of the novellas. I think that the audience for prose was not the same as the comics and not that many were printed and sold. My guess is that they're ashcan size and not that many pages, but I could be wrong.

I'll keep an eye out for that Silverwolf index, seems like a must have. I was reading an old thread on the Rebel Studios forum and one of the Vigil experts (Glen) was pointing out that there were some errors in that book. I'd link it but my history won't show that I went to that site for some reason. I think he was correcting some of the info on the Grips portfolios (which would explain the wrong plates that I saw in the picture showing the 3rd portfolio)

Those first three Vigil Grips portfolios are tough since they were limited to 100 and according to the SilverWolf Index only 90 of each were put into distribution. Ever seen the Eradicators or Fat Ninja portfolios? Only 80 of each distributed and they don't have the popularity of Grips/Vigil to make them visible.

 

Ok, I've never seen the Grips ad you're talking about.

 

I saw the Grips portfolio #3 placeholder on your site- never saw that ad before- is it from one of the comics? Please let me know where it can be found, I'll take a hi res scan of it and blow up the top plate ridiculously huge, like I did for the Grips 7 (Silverwolf) cover taken from Tim's art book. The top plate must be from the 3rd portfolio (and looks amazing) but all the other plates behind it look like they were taken from either the 4th or 5th portfolios.

 

I might have seen some Fat Ninja portfolios for sale once, but can't quite remember as I wasn't into Fat Ninja or the Eradicators.

 

I was hoping you might have seen some Grips novellas but I saw on your site that they're still unconfirmed.

Kpaqu1, your site is awesome! I bookmarked it years ago, but stopped visiting until now.

 

Maybe someone here can provide some info on a Grips portfolio I received quite a few years ago. I got it with my copy of Grips V2, # 1 Limited cover (GMC). It came in a plain white envelope with the Silverwolf logo in the top left corner and the eight included plates numbered 559 out of 2500. The only other info printed is "Grips Portfolio."

 

Can anyone tell me which portfolio # this would be? Here are pics of the portfolio.

 

This is definitely the GMC Grips Portfolio from 1990. The plates have similar printing and hand numbering as the GMC Edge Portfolio. If the comic you have is also numbered it was sold as set for $35. Bill C is also correct that it's Muro art. I recognize the second to last plate as the cover to Grips v2 #2.

Excellent find! The first time I've seen it. And I can move it to the "confirmed" section of the checklist.

I did it in honor of needing only one more issue for a complete collection of Silverwolf and GMC comic books. That being SilverWolf Bulletin #5 w/Fat Ninja.

 

Hey I've seen that site before- very cool. Feel free to use some of my stuff from CAF on there if you want (I have a way bigger pic of the Grips promo poster uploaded plus other goodies). I uploaded some Vigil Grips portfolio plates on one of the 3 Vigil threads in the Copper forum too

 

I did know about GMC Action but they stopped with Vigil's #6 IIRC. I think the Silverwolf series might have been slated for 12 issues

 

If you by chance have Kris Silver or Dale Quick's contact info, I'd love to get that if you aren't against giving out the info. I'd like to make them some offers on a couple things. I do have an addy/phone # for Kris but am not sure if it's current
