I don't know who we're talking about either, but poor grading is common in this industry. There are long-time sellers on eBay who make me curse when I open a thread only to see their name. In terms of the boards, ignore if you can, negotiate by PM if you must. I think it's perfectly acceptable to say "I'm offering X because the grade looks Y to me"

I was just looking at this. Also. Showing off books bought today at a LCS. Yep....duly noted. He pulled this with me last year to get out of a purchase, and then within a day was posting WTBs and purchasing books. So the job market in the UK must be amazing in the way of rehires. I saw this twice yesterday. In fairness to the sellers whose threads the slapfights are happening in, wouldn't a PM to the seller suffice?

I'm not sure how long ago it was, but didn't he give mid-grade SA Marvels a pretty good whack at one point? I meant in terms of an individual book, but yup, percentages slid. Ever since the 80's, G was 10% of NM, F was 40%, and VF was 70%. Then the dealers started saying, "discount or it won't move." Like a self-fulfilling prophecy, Overstreet lowered the percentages. Problem was, people still expected a deal off list price, which pushed down the value of low to mid-grade books even further. F fell to 33% about 10-15 years ago, and quickly slid to 25%. When G/VG/F became 5/10/15%, that was more than a whack. If I'd been counting how much I'd spent compared to what things were listed for, I'd have gone out the window like Black Tuesday.

In truth, I can't think of the last book I saw drop in value since the 70's X-Men some years ago. The only thing that has gone down consistently are the proportions of grades below 9.2. Mini-rant: I find it odd that year after year, advisors say that low and mid grade books have to be discounted in order to sell, but the Harley Yees and Mile High Comics of the world continue to sell their entire inventory above guide, if not at the old percentages...

I agree that there are no grounds for putting kitsune on Probation, as he has offered, albeit in the rudest way possible, to rectify the situation. This is not the place to punish people, only to solve a current dispute. I wouldn't want to sell him the book either, but unless you go through with the sale and he stumbles, there's no cause here. For my part, I will not be doing business with kitsune in the future. His lack of responsibility and and terrible attitude take a back seat to that awful internet speak. "Oh noes"? Come on...

I believe the nomination has merit. As much as I'd like to say that there was no tangible commitment to buy said books, the seller said he'd set them aside. That's acknowledgement that the seller is selling to Jimmy, and presumably pulled them from his selling stock. If the shoe was on the other foot, and Jimmy backed out, the seller would be justified in saying he lost potential sales while the books were set aside.

Nope, not a word. If a dispute is posted at a later date, I'll chime in, but for now, it's not my business.

Thanks to all who've answered, but there isn't a consensus here, so I'm going to stay out of the other boardie's deal. Despite my confidence, I can't guarantee anything, and I'd hate to set a precedent where people derail threads by screaming "trimmed" without proof. The seller isn't particularly active, but the buyer is, so I'm just going to hope he has the expertise to spot the trimming.

Thanks to everyone so far who has answered. No, I'm not an expert in detection, which is why I didn't post it openly. I think it's a pretty sure thing, though. I don't want to post the book here or in the Grading Forum because even the back cover is fairly distinctive. We have a number of seasoned dealers on the boards, but is anyone recognized as an expert who can look and assess?

Moral dilemma: do I disclose trimming on a book that was undisclosed if I'm not the seller? I checked with mod Architecht, and he suggested that I post my dilemma in this thread, and let the community decide what action to take. Some months ago, I met a user on these boards to view some books for sale. By the pictures that were sent to me, I detected trimming on one of them. When I saw the books, I was certain there was trimming. I told him there was trimming, and he resigned himself to the fact that he'd overpaid for the book. He wasn't ready to sell at the restored price, so he kept it. Fast forward to now. The user put up his books for sale, and the trimmed book was one of the offerings. Pictures in the thread were large, and no grade was given. I PMed him to ask if he'd disclose in the thread that the book was trimmed. He replied that it wasn't trimmed at all. I PMed one of the sellers on the boards who I've dealt with before, and he confirmed that the book appears to be trimmed. The book has since sold, and I feel terrible. The boards seem like a place of full disclosure and good faith. Do I have the right to PM the buyer and warn him that he bought a trimmed book? Do I have the obligation to tell him, or should the buyer beware? Maybe he knows and bought it anyway. I just don't know. What should I do?

Bought some of the shootydog's 100 Page giants. Pretty books priced to move, and they came safely, so thumbs up!

The company in Montreal is called Universal Distribution, who are just a sub-distributor, as I believe they order their comics through Diamond as well. My old store in Montreal used to order through Universal, and a buddy was regularly able to pull gradeable books off the stands, even though everything was quickly bagged and boarded before it went out. Then again, early issues of Ultimate Spider-Man with the stiff covers were all impacted on the outer edges (two bumpers as they came off the press?), and there wasn't a gradeable copy to be found in my area. I don't know how much handling played a part in your blown corners as much as how they looked coming off the line. If you want to do some detective work, most comics and TPB's are printed by Quebecor in Montreal, but I don't know where they go from there. Presumably, they're packed directly into Diamond boxes and shipped out to Diamond distribution centres.
