Hint #3: To pull this off, (among other things) I need Wonder Woman #12-14, and Sensation Comics #38-47
Hint #4:
I'm guessing you're collecting the "AA" logo-ed covers before Gaines sold out to DC?

By the way, airplanes on the cover of Marvel Mystery 2 have the Balkenkreuz which is a symbol of the Wehrmacht and it was used in WWI as well as WWII. The Swastika was a symbol of the party and became the national flag from 1933-1945 more or less.
The art posted in the first thread shows that the plane did not have the Balkenkreuz on the wing. It is the same symbol that is on the tail on the plane.
Correct - clearly the cover to Marvel Mystery 2 is not a candidate.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The point is that whether by editorial intent or mistake, the unspecified symbols on planes blitz bombing the city still make this an anti-Axis war cover, ...swastika or Balkenkreuz notwithstanding. The Angel text story, also illustrated by Charles Mazoujian, bears this out. MM #2 came out prior to Top Notch, that's also indisputable. That keeps Marvel Mystery in the running for first WWII cover sweepstakes. Of course, that's just my opinion informed by the evidence so far presented, other's mileage, etc., etc.
If he seeks the first swastika cover, the Jan. '40 Top Notch appears to be at the head of the class, but the first anti-Axis war cover featuring a costumed hero would appear to be MM #2. For the first super-powered warrior combating Axis soldiers, that's apparently Amazing Man #9. The latter two are dated from Dec. '39 (statistically a tie). If there are other anti-Axis war covers or swastika covers that've been overlooked, I'm sure someone will alert us.
Side note: Amazing Man #8 (Oct.) features a large hand gripping a submarine of unspecific nationality. That could be considered a war cover, but the lack of any defining elements presents a gray area.
PS: I have no dog in this hunt as I'm not trying to sell my MM #2.
Generally agree with this, but some of the Amazing Man #s you mention got mixed up!
The October issue with the hand/sub is #6 (not #8), and the Dec issue with the war story is #8 (not #9, which also has a war cover/story continuing from #8).

I live in the city and would have loved to attend -- didn't see publicity for this anywhere.
I got some emails from Anthony's mentioning the one-day show but when I went to Carbo's website there was nothing there about it! I checked other online sources, local dealers like Tomorrow's Treasures ... nothing. I assumed it had been canceled and maybe Anthony's site hadn't updated.
Bummer, would have loved to have been there. Surprised Carbo didn't promote it more.

Not everyday that you find this for $5 at the flea market - but I guess today was my day
No back cover, and front cover is detached, but all the pages are there, so I aint complaining
Fantastic! If you don't mind sharing the story, what were the circumstances of finding this? Were there any other good books?

2/1 is the toughest by far. 2/4&2/5 are actually the easiest of the 2/1-2/6 "challenging " issues. In fact I've owned as many diff 2/4s as the other 5 combinedYeah, fantastic book! Vol 2 #4 is one of the most elusive issues, been on my Want List forever and I've never even had a chance to buy one.Thank Gator, you'd know better than anyone! And "easiest" is quite a relative term when it comes to Centaurs. Next time you run across a 2/4 in lower grade please let me know!

Yeah, I was squeezed out of the high end books a long time ago, but there are still many cool affordable books, and if you are a persistent hunter you can still turn up 'out-of-reach' issues at a bargain price every now and then.

The Top Notch #1 is probably the earliest fictional attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese or their thinly disguised surrogates, and there are a few others too before National #18 (cover dated 12/41).
Years ago it seems that only National 18 was known/hyped, and I remember thinking it seemed so spooky that such a story appeared before the actual attack. Now after discovering several other similar tales I figured that Pearl Harbor was a well-known military base and a logical place for an attack to occur, so not quite so surprising that among the hundreds of GA stories to show heroes fighting the Axis around the world, a few would "foretell" of attacks on the Hawaiian naval base.
Still, they are very cool books! And the National 18 seems to be a very uncommon book.
