  1. Approximately 4 months ago, I was missing approximately 76 jeweler inserts out of a possible 692 comic books that could contain the insert in the titles of Batman, Detective, Superman, Action and Justice League of America. Since that time, I asked approximately 400 different sellers on ebay to see if they had any comic books with Mark Jewelers inserts. I found that approximately 3 out of 4 sellers would respond to my questions. After expending this effort, I found 4 sellers that had jeweler variants on hand. Of those 4 sellers, I found 4 Mark Jeweler inserts that I did not already have in my collection. There are lots of Mark Jeweler variants for sale on ebay in the five titles I collect, but my point is that these Jeweler variants can be REALLY hard to find when you get down to the last 10% or so of the missing ones. Of course I realize that this pursuit is pure insanity. If anyone else out there is collecting these variants of DC comics, I would love to hear about your experience, and I would more than gladly help fill in holes in your collection with my spares if you would help me find the onnes that are missing from my collection. Just send me a Private Message on this website if you are interested.
  2. God help you for going down that rabbit hole. Those are nice copies you found.
  3. You guys might get a kick out of this. I friend sent me his spare copy of his BM 457 2nd print newsstand variant so I could sell it on his behalf to another friend for $750. I sent it USPS priority mail (with only $50 of insurance) and it got stuck in Macon GA for almost 30 days. During this time my friend decided he no longer wanted it (financial issues). After waiting about 20 minutes on the phone, I opened up a case with USPS which they promptly closed a few days later, and still no trace of the comic book. Luckily I found a phone number for the Macon distribution center and found a helpful postal employee. He put out a search for it and it was found and on its way a few days later. I was able to get the thing returned straight back to me. I was pretty worried for awhile and really kicking myself for not insuring for the full amount and requiring signature for the book. Funny thing though... after I got it back in the mail, I thought to call my collectibles insurance company and they said "No worries.... you are insured with zero deductible, even for losses in the mail". If you have a serious collection, I highly recommend you spend a couple hundred a year for top-of-the-line insurance. Here's photos of the issue that was almost lost forever. It is pretty beat up (vg- in my opinion) because of wear/tear, residue from a sticker that was removed, and apparently a little bit of paper missing from the cover near the "M" in Batman where the sticker was torn off.
  4. A friend of mine just found a Batman New 52 #10 newsstand variant for me at NYCC. That means I now have all newsstand variants in the original, New 52, and Rebirth issues of Batman, Detective, and Action Comics titles. That completes a major milestone for me. If you are thinking about trying to do this, I would caution you. It took me 7 years (and I won't say how much money) to make it happen. I was mainly doing it as an academic pursuit. I know one other friend who is trying to do this for the title of Batman. He has all but a few of the most recent New 52 and Rebirth issues (which, toward the end, were hard to find due to low distribution). So now the only remaining newsstand issues I need to find are Superman New 52 #8, Action #252 Millennium Edition, and Justice League (1987 series) #1 Millennium Edition. I am confident they exist, but I have never seen any of those 3 newsstand editions (as a matter of fact, I have not even seen an image of the newsstand versions of those comic books).
  5. Great point. Plus about 25 known copies of Batman 457 2nd print news. In my mind, it is hard to say at this time about which ones are most rare. A lot of people look for the Batman 457 2nd news, but not sure many people are looking for the Robin or the Superman.
  6. Interesting. I have almost every newsstand issue of Batman, Detective, Superman, and Action Comics since they started in 1980. The only exceptions are Batman New 52 #10 and Superman New 52 #8 and 9. Some guy has Superman #9 on sale for $60, but I can't bring myself to spend that much when I know I will probably find one on ebay for less than $10 one day. But if you ever find one of those, let me know.... I will definitely make it worth your while if you sell to me.
  7. I think there is a good chance that they will note it as "newsstand" issue. I heard that they started doing this. If you sell one, I would like to hear how much you get for it. Regards, Kirk
  8. Thanks. I've added the info to the database. It makes sense that Kamandi 36 has the blue 88. I had not seen that one until your post. The publisher was not always precise on keeping inserts the same by cover date. For Kamandi 36, the blue 88 insert bled over from the previous month, where most DC issues contained the blue 88 insert.
  9. Great job on the GL 62. I was just thinking the other day that it was odd that we had not seen a newly discovered DCU variant since January... and all of a sudden this one pops up. I wonder if any others will be found soon
  10. You would have to check it out on ebay and judge condition for yourself.
  11. uh oh... another rookie mistake on my part. Thanks for clueing me in. Sorry about that!
  12. I bought those three 2-packs you see in posting above. I'm going to sell the Spare 499 pack starting tonight on ebay. If someone is willing to offer one hundred bucks for it as firends/family sale, I would be willing to cancel the auction.
  13. Here is a strawman list of DC Universe logo variants that have two versions: Batman Legend of the Dark Knight 63 DCU with “Collector’s Pack First Printing” in the indicia (others unmarked) Detective 674 DCU with “Collector’s Pack First Printing” in the indicia (others unmarked) Detective 690 stickered DCU (others have the DC Universe symbol printed on the cover) Flash 96 DCU with “Second printing” in the indicia (others unmarked and have different ads) Green Lantern 51 DCU with roman number II on the front cover (others first print) Green Lantern 59 stickered DCU (others have the DC Universe symbol printed on the cover) Superman 104 stickered DCU (others have the DC Universe symbol printed on the cover) Superman Man of Steel 30 DCU with “Collector’s Pack First Printing” in the indicia (others unmarked) Superman Man of Steel 42 stickered DCU (others have the DC Universe symbol printed on the cover) Superman Man of Steel Annual 3 DCU with “Second printing” in the indicia (others unmarked)
  14. agreed... it looks like the best condition we have seen yet. Mine was a FN+ at best.
  15. thanks. Yes, it is nice to see the Superman and Batman 2nd print newsstands together. I should do some closeup looks at them to see if there's any clues about when they were made.
  16. I've opened quite a few 20-packs bricks and so have some friends of mine in the name of research. In general, they contain comic books with the same cover date. Every once in awhile there would be some in the pack from the prior or following month.
  17. The DC Universe variant of SM MOS 20 is among the very hardest to find... yet alone in a sealed pack. Congrats!
  18. Up until about 5 years ago Batman 457 2nd print newsstand was thought to have been a myth (some had theorized that the only known image was photo-shopped). Since then, 25+ copies of the Batman 457 2nd print have now surfaced. The prices on ebay seem to be well above $1K, and more like $2K for higher grade. The insatiable demand and prices are very surprising to me. I think that goes to show you how die-hard the Batman variant collectors are. On the other hand, only 2 copies of the Superman 50 2nd print newsstand have surfaced. I believe there should be just as many Superman 50's out there, but I don't think there is anywhere near the same interest in finding them as the Batman's.
  19. Wow... what did the pack cost you? That one one is among the rarest of the rare.
  20. Justice League New 52 #1 had a 3rd and 4th printing come out in newsstand format, which was very odd. Again, probably due to demand. I have them both in hand. I bought them both on ebay just because I thought it was very odd to see 3rd and 4th printings in newsstand. I never saw a #1 2nd printing newsstand issue.
  21. No, because that is the first printing. I think MyComicShop is all sold out of 2nd prints again. Chances of finding the 2nd print with newsstand bar code on front cover would seem slim though, even if they had 2nd prints in stock.
  22. LOL. Maybe RockMyAmadeus has that case of Superman 50 2nd print newsstands, but I sure do not. Here's the story... 1. Many moons ago, RockMyAmadeus theorized that Superman 50's 2nd printing might have a newsstand edition just like Batman 457's 2nd printing. This hunch made a lot of sense when you compare the two issues. Both were originally cover dated December 1990. Both had a bold banner at the top to identify the second printing (i.e, "New Robin Issue" on the BM 457 and "Historic Engagement Issue" on the SM 50). 2. On or about Feb 2017, RockMyAmadeus got the elusive Superman 50 2nd print newsstand and published the results. http://the-comic-book-forum.boards.net/thread/812/discovery-superman-1990-print-newsstand 3. RockMyAmadeus would not sell at any price and I turned green with envy. 4. I looked high and low for another newsstand variant of Superman 50 2nd print. I also bought out all of MyComicsShop's 20 or so Superman 50 2nd prints, hoping that one would be a newsstand issue. But the search was fruitless. 5. At the suggestion of some friends, I posted a $200 "wanted to buy" thread on this website last February. I got no hits and raised the ante to $300. Still no hits, and I decided to raise it to $500 to see if I can get someone else to find the Superman 50. The price is ridiculous, but I don't have a lot of time to chase these down but I really wanted a copy to marry up with my Batman 457 2nd print newsstand issue. I do think this might be the highest price that will ever be paid for the Superman 50, because Superman variant collectors don't seem to be as fanatical as Batman variant collectors. 5. Just a few weeks ago, MyComicShop found two more 2nd printings of Superman 50 and posted them on their website. Bffnut bought both copies and one of them was the 2nd print newsstand. After going through this range of emotions: I gladly paid $500 to bffnut and he shipped the comic book in a way that even the most zealous postman could not damage. 6. The real mystery: There were many second printings of DC Comics produced around the same time as Superman 50, Batman 457, and Robin 1. Why were these the only ones found to have come out in newsstand format? We don't know for sure. One of the best explanations I've found is RockMyAmadeus' theory that those issues were so popular, DC needed to get those second printings also sent out to newsstands to satisfy demand. Thank you to RockMyAmadeus for discovering this variant (if the word "discovering" ever applied to a variant, I think this is it). And thank you very much to bffnut for finding and selling it to me.
