Any modern Strange stories that you like or could recommend? I have hardly read any modern comics, but I picked up a collection of 18 modern longboxes recently. As I've gone thru the boxes (to sell) I've pulled a few story arcs to read. I thought the Strange series was good. Today I read the Jason Aaron Thor story arc about the God slayer. I really liked that one too. I usually just pick up trade paperbacks but it's been fun reading the comics

These are my favorite Doc stories after the original Strange Tales run:

Dr. Strange and Dr. Doom: Triumph and Torment

Dr Strange and Dr Doom go to hell to rescue Doom's mom. Illustrated by Hellboy's Mike Mignola. GREAT BOOK!

    Dr. Strange: The Oath

Brian K Vaughan and Martin Marcos put out the best Strange stories in YEARS.

Dr. Strange and Dracula: The Montresi Formula

Classic story from the second Dr. Strange series. Also starring Blade and Hannibal King.

    Hope this helps!

I just picked up the 6 issue Straczinski "Strange" set to read. I thought it was really a good read and it seemed to me like it would be a fairly good basis for the movie. Mordo/Dormamu are the villains. Clea is in it. It's got a fairly modern slant to it.

I wonder if this series will start to rise in value?

Issue 5 has a great cover:

    Worst... Series... Ever...

How can anyone like these books? It was a terrible Matrix ripoff written by a hack. Just awful.

  3. Some nice additions to the collection came in this week!

First up is a beautiful copy of Journey Into Mystery #108:

A Heroclix convention exclusive that just got released 2 weeks ago:

A foreign edition of Captain America #57 from the UK:

Why the Cap ? Because of this interior pin-up:

    ca57_pinup.jpg

Finally, last but definitely not least, the best copy of Amazing Spider-Man Annual #2 that was on eBay:

    asma2.jpg

  4. Some new Dr. Strange stuff from the UK and Germany:

Is this what the cover to Doctor Strange #184 would have looked like? Maybe. This image wasn't published in the US:

This is a reprint of Dr. Strange #181. I think the cover looks much better here in red than the American version, which was printed in yellow. (Google it to see what I mean):

Next 2 are from Germany. Never saw this title before. Interiors are full color:

Interior page from #12 has a history of Dr. Strange:

Finally, an early issue of Super Spider-Man, which featured black and white reprints published horizontally in the UK:

And a pin-up from that issue never published in the US:

  5. I recently relocated and just finished putting up my new Sanctum Sanctorum for my Dr. Strange collection. It holds almost every comic book and graphic novel appearance of Marvel's Dr. Strange. Also included are original works of art by Gene Colan, Frank Brunner and Alex Ross, among others, as well as DVDs, video games and toys:

A lenticular piece I made based on Marie Severin's art from Strange Tales #158. It's in a lightbox right outside the room which houses The Sanctum:

This closet adjacent to The Sanctum houses all my Dr. Strange t-shirts and my collection of first printing hardcovers of Neil Gaiman's Sandman:

My large display cabinet couldn't fit into the doorway of the room where The Sanctum is housed, so it resides in my living room:

  6. A big thank you to Valiant for sending these over to me from Italy! Very happy to add them to the collection!

First up, a double pack of Dr. Strange #0 and a reprint of L'Uomo Ragno #1:

    luomoragno1.jpg

I would love to find an original of the Spider-Man book. It's Dr. Strange's first appearance in Italy (reprinting Dr. Strange #169) and the most valuable Italian comic book in existence (if it contains the original poster). Still nice to have any copy of it, especially one in such a cool package!

Next up is some Defenders reprints, the first of which already appeared here in this thread:

Once again, grateful to get these! They will be loved and well taken care of! :D

  7. Nice first Hellboy, Kaptain Kollektor!

    Not comics but comics related...

Dr. Strange has appeared in numerous video games over the years, and this is one of 3 or 4 that you can actually play him as a character (besides the MMORPGs). Here it is in every format:

    legomarvel.jpg

  8. And by the way everyone... Really nice books. Any copy is nice to find, but those 7.0,s 7.5s, 8.0s, 8.5s, and 9.0s and especially anything higher are things of beauty.

Here's an interesting dilemma for an obsessive comic collector...

When I started my Dr. Strange collection in 2002, I tried to buy a nice mid-grade copy of Strange Tales #110, 111, 114 and 115 each year from a convention. Back in 2005 I had a decent job and could afford to spend $1000 at Wizard World in Long Beach. My goal was to get a raw Strange Tales 110 that I could get graded as a 9.0 or higher.

I get to the convention and CGC is grading on site, so I go on the hunt.

Metropolis Comics had a raw copy they graded as a 9.0 (and they are extremely reliable in terms of grading BTW). Easily the nicest copy there. They've had years of experience with CGC and tell me although the book is amazing that they can't absolutely guarantee it would be a 9.0 or higher and may be an 8.5.

Instead of buying that beautiful copy (which I think did come out a 9.0 when it was eventually graded. Anyone at Metropolis Comics know?), for the same price I decided to get:

    1. A copy of Strange Tales #115 that graded at 7.5

    2. A raw copy of Strange Tales #110 (I think it's my Copy B above)

    3. A low mid-grade raw copy of Strange Tales #111 that I would grade a 3.0

    4. 2 raw copies of Strange Tales #114 both in the 5.0 range

    and

    5. A Dr. Strange sketch by Alex Ross:

WOULD YOU HAVE DONE THE SAME THING?
