  1. Not sure if this is the right place for this, but couldn't seem to figure a better option. I'm going to be in the market for a commission, but unlike anything I've been after in the past where I knew what artist I wanted, in this case the artist isn't as important.

Last year as a school project my son had to write a short story - he decided on a superhero story, and made it a comic (complete with very bad art). I'd really like to get a commission done of his character as a present for him. So I'm looking for artist suggestions that would do a color commission of an original character (I understand that is sometimes an issue) in a classic superhero style. Now ideally since the artist pedigree isn't that key to this I'd rather not break the bank on this, but I'm happy to spend appropriately for a quality piece and to ensure I'm dealing with a reputable artist.

    Any suggestions?

  2. My latest commission in the works:

It is getting inked (full color) this week, so updates to come!

I was looking back through the thread, and don't know how I missed this.

That is really awesome!!! (thumbs u (thumbs u

Thanks - I am eager to see it finished!!!

Looks great, who's the artist? I've had a few ideas for Joe commissions but I've never followed through as I haven't found an artist doing commissions that's got GI Joe samples (so I know I'll get something I'm looking for). I do have an Atkins cover on the way, but now looking for something in multiple character 11x17.

  3. I have shared some stuff that I recently picked up and quietly tucked some other stuff away.

Here is where I show my age...

Picked up a page a few months ago from GI Joe 20 which was one of the first comic books I ever read let alone one of the first GI Joe books I ever read. That page featured Clutch in a solo story who was the first figure I ever received.

Tonight there were a slew of vintage Joe pages up for auction that were ending on eBay tonight. I bet on all of them and would have taken any and all of them if I could. I wound up winning Page 16 from issue 38 featuring the introduction of Recondo and features Stalker. Recondo was the second Joe I ever received and the first I ever picked out. Stalker was the third. Woo hoo.

1984 was a magical year for toys. It was the second to last year of Star Wars and Jedi was still being pushed while the GI Joe universe was rocketing to eclipse all other lines and the Joe comic book was one of the most popular comic books around.

Nice Joe page, Recondo is certainly a figure I remember fondly, and Stalker was my first ever Joe - my dad brought it back as a gift after he'd been away for a month on military exercises. He had no idea what he started! Very cool page, congrats!

  4. I love the matching frames, and what you've got described as the mounting process sounds perfect. Do you mount things up yourself? I've been thinking of a similar approach to matching frames, but I'd be interested in being able to switch out the art in the future - not regularly, but I've only got room for 5 or 6 frames, so I'd want to frame my best pieces and be able to switch them in the future if/when I upgrade.

  5. While like everyone else I love the Avengers and Arrow cast books, I'm likely most envious for the GotG Bautista book as it fits far better with my collecting focus, and is much closer to the attainable range for me than those other books will ever be. Congrats on all the awesome pickups!!

  6. For all you Guardians of the Galaxy and Infinity Gauntlet fans…here's a "gem" of a page featuring Nebula, the adopted daughter of Thanos, seizing the gauntlet from Thanos and taking sweet revenge on the mad Titan. One of my favorite images from the Infinity Gauntlet saga...Marvel later used the art as a TPB chapter splash.

I'm so excited to get this page, didn't know these were drawn twice-up!

    Infinity Gauntlet #5 p29

    Thanks Joe!

That's awesome, while I'm a current fan of GotG, the main reason for that is my love the Infinity Gauntlet series. The first massive crossover I read completely when I was younger, and it really started my love for all of the all encompassing crossover series (I love team books, and these things are even better when all the teams get together).

I'm incredibly jealous, I have to keep my eyes open for any art from this series in the future. Congrats!!

  7. Great Man Cave boostergold - While I love the hardcover collection, the item I just had to comment on was the Bionic Six figures still in packaging! I came across mine in the basement last month looking for some other old toys, had all the figures and van and bike - loved playing with those.

  8. I'm noticing a pattern with wives and statues...

To be fair to my wife, it's not just the statues - she's not a fan of the comics or OA either. That said she's not against them in the house as long as it's in my cave and not elsewhere. What she'd have issue with here is the cost, and there's no concealing the cost when FedEx shows up at the door with a large tax/customs import bill on delivery.

  9. This thread is killing me, I finally went over to browse through the sideshow site and found 3 statues I want. Paying for them is hard enough, finding room to display them harder - getting them into the house without my wife noticing - impossible.....well unless I ship them to a friend first hmmmm

  10. This?

There was a discussion about Ikeas helping a few pages back. I'll have to dig for it. doh!

That's it - very popular in the statue community. I'll have to get pictures of mine and add to this thread. If you end up interested, I'd suggest setting up a search on Craigslist/kijiji - I got 2 last year for the same price as one new, and they'd had lights added so less than half price and the condition is perfect. I've had far more luck on kijiji for display cases then I ever have for comics!

  11. Finally posting some SS books that I specifically got done for me (thanks to DScott), previously I'd just been buying from others. These were all done at NYCC, happy to see 3 9.8's, the only 9.6 was actually expected to grade low, I'd have been fine with a 9.4, just got that done as it's the book that I used as a reference for a Tony Daniel sketch I also got done at the show (you can find that in the obvious place).

Now that I was somewhat successful in picking 9.8's out of my own collection, I get to start digging through boxes for candidates for SS on my trip to ECCC, building that wantlist is becoming very long!

  12. Curious...why do so many of you display expensive or beloved comic books in the light? I've never understood this. I suppose it's OK with expensive and UV protected holders, but it's so easy to print out a nice color copy of a favorite comic. With a printed copy, who cares what happens to it, and you can still enjoy the cover. Shouldn't comics be stored in a dark, cool, relatively dry, and pest free room?

Just wondering... I am a collector who really enjoys Amazing Spider-Man issues in high grade, and I have never displayed a copy in the light. I put them in a Mylar with a full back or send them for CGCing.

All the best and Merry Christmas!

    V/R,

    Mike

For me, I go by the motto of collect what you like, and because I like it, I want to see it. While there's certainly some potential of long term value in the items, that's not why I buy them. I buy them because I like them and therefore want to see them. Same philosophy with my other collections, if I'm not looking through my card collection regularly, I get rid of it as it's stopped meaning something to me. I would agree with the other statement above, if I'm just going to display a copy, I might as well just get prints of high end books I don't own that look cool. Just my 2 cents.
