  2. I think the magazine version is awesome. Love that it's not printed on glossy paper -- it gives it a retro feel. And the art deserves to be seen in a bigger size. I'm collecting the magazines going forward even though they lag behind the regular series.
  3. Yes, hopefully Williamson provides more rationale for her state of mind. As I said, I can understand her blaming her husband for losing their son, and even hating him for that, but to believe he murdered their son, well, it's a stretch at this point.
  4. I'm enjoying the series thus far (but haven't read #4 yet), with the exception of one thing: How come the wife/mother character is so convinced the husband killed their son? The series starts by showing them as a happy and supportive family and after the son disappears she just turns on the husband and accuses him of murdering the missing son, when there's no evidence that says that. Sure, I can understand that after the loss of a child that a previously healthy marriage might crack, or that she would even blame the Dad for their son going missing since he was with the kid when he disappeared. But to be so convinced that the Dad murdered the kid? Just doesn't work with the way these characters were set up and feels crammed in just to create some conflict. I think Williamson could have handled this a little better as it doesn't feel natural or in tune with the characters. And it makes the Mom a really unsympathetic character. OK, sorry for the rant. Other than that, it's a good series so far. :-)
  5. Here are my copies of a couple of books recently mentioned in this thread: This Magazine is Haunted #3 - yup, a pretty decent copy with intact spine, staples, centerfold, etc. Nice pages too. I still put it in the G/VG range but given how hard this book is to find I am more than pleased with this copy. Paid $250 for it about 5-6 years ago, which seemed a lot for a lower-grade book, but I knew my chances to find a better one were slim. Unseen #12 - Some stated this was a tough book to get in nice grade. I wasn't aware. I got this copy a few years ago at San Diego Comic Con. At the time I was focusing on putting together runs of the Standard PCH books and bought this one because it wasn't too expensive and in very nice shape.
  6. Yes, Worlds of Fear #2 is similarly scarce. In fact, I think I see fewer of those than TMIH 3! I actually have a fairly decent copy of TMIH 3 and a really nice copy of Unseen 12. I'll post pics here soon.
  7. That's high grade to me.... and a beauty at that. GOD BLESS... -jimbo(a friend of jesus) (thumbs u Definitely high grade for me as well. Really nice copy there.
  8. I agree. The GCPD allows an armed goon to walk in and commandeer their entire department and all the cops walk out when he demands they turn over a fellow cop who he is obviously going to kill? I don't care how corrupt the GCPD is, that was just ridiculous. Or are the only cops on the GCPD who are not in the pockets of the crime bosses Montoya and Allen (and Gordon)? The whole scene was too far-fetched (and that's saying a lot for a comic book show). But the episode picked up from there and ended well so they made up for that ridiculous scene. I do like the show for the most part.
  9. Although I'm a slab-cracker and agree with this, I actually can't +1 this notion generally. I agree because I'm from the era where the actual books are the object of the collecting activity, not plastic cases. But, that's my preference. We're dealing with a new era of collectors who actually do consider the plastic cases themselves (with the "pretty" number) to be part of the collectible object...Amadeus Arkham's post there illustrates this...he gets aesthetic enjoyment from having the plastic case itself. To each his/her own. The beauty of the hobby is that it's flexible. We slab-crackers have given plenty of answers to the OP's original question as to "why crack." Others have answered "why not crack"...the difference ultimately stems in part from how we each define and parameterize the item that is the collectible. I've seen slabbed books for sale where the seller states that the slab itself is in mint condition. That is just nuts to me. So a slab that is slightly scuffed or has a scratch on it is worth less than a "mint" slab? Wow. But to each his own, I guess.
  10. I buy mostly raw books because I like to read them and flip through them. I have a about 20 slabbed Golden Age and PCH books and I'm hesitant to crack them out of the slabs because I know I'll likely get a better price if I have to resell a book if it's in the slab. But I really want to take them out and look at them! Also, there are some folks out there who swear that books sitting in an air-tight slab are going to age worse than a book that is allowed to "breathe" stored in a mylar with an acid-free board. I think there could be some legitimacy to this. Especially if you think about books that are pressed prior to going into the slab. I wonder if there are any experiments going on to test this. Yes, it'd take years to really get a good read on the situation (slabbed vs. raw) in terms of what holds up better, but it'd be interesting to know.
  11. I put a run of these together about 10 years ago from #5 to #20, but missing #14. They are high grade but unslabbed, although I expect most of them would get in 9.0 - 9.4 range and a few slightly lower. I'll need to pull them out and take a closer look at them to see if they're as high-grade as I'm remembering. It's a cool run. I love the Billy Graham art! Now I'll have to get the #21 - #24!
  12. What's that book like on the inside? It's not to bad. I purchased this book because of it's mention in SOTI. There's a lot of Evans art inside, but it's not his best work. I put this one into my "might sell before an interesting auction" pile. Here are a few pages: Roy Thomas and PS Artbooks have collected Captain Video. I haven't read them but I figure there must be something to them if they are willing to put the time, effort, and cost into reprinting them in those nice PS Artbooks HC editions. Obviously Roy Thomas has a soft spot for the series!
  13. Nice Copy!!! Tough to find that one in decent condition.
  14. Looks like you and I are collecting some of the same runs!
  15. Real nice looking 4.0! That book has been going up in price lately it seems from recent auctions results. Congrats!
  16. Nice books! Sensation #109 is one of my favorite all-time covers. Yeah, it's cheesy, but it's so great!
  17. Stunning books! I really like the Men's Adventures #25 and the Suspense #24! And the AIWW #3 in that grade is incredible!
  18. AMAZING!!!! I've often thought it'd be fun to pick one cool, rare book and collect as many copies as I can find, but there are way too many other comics I want to focus on just one. But kudos to you for putting this together. Truly impressive!
  19. Wow, very nice! I've never paid this title much notice (never really collected war comics) but there are some killer covers in this run. And, obviously, some nice interior work as well. Hmmmmm...
  20. Fantastic! One of the GREAT PCH covers! I've never owned a copy but it's been on my want list for years. I've either never found a nice enough copy (all I need is a nice VG) or had the money available when I've run into decent copies. One of these days...
  21. Amazing thread and killer books! Does anybody know if there are specific issues of Eerie Pub mags that are particularly scarce or sought after?
  22. That's a really nice cover. And I don't even collect romance books, but have been interested in dabbling.
