Which copy would you choose?  I've had this idea for a topic for a long time.  Feel free to post comparison books and add to this thread.

I”ve had several top copy books recently surrender their spot – in no small part to the recently discovered Promise Collection.  My Exciting 36 to your left ending in #003 was recently usurped by a Comiclink 8.5 offering and tied by a  Heritage 8.0 offering.  The CL 8.5 copy is in the middle and the Heritage copy is to your right.

 Notice the CGC blue labels.  My book on the left has the truest scan.  The CL (middle) and Heritage (your right) scans are  juiced…especially the Heritage scan.  The CL 8.5, juiced or not, LACKS whiteness and brightness, nevertheless, CGC gave it the highest grade and whitest pages.   The CL 8.5 copy is also severely miswrapped.  The cover slogan is missing part of the “e” of “crime” and it has an ugly white strip from the back cover running down the spine.  As for the Heritage 8.0 copy on the right, it  has a badly mis-aligned cover with a hard upward slant and rounding to the bottom corner with paper loss.  In my opinion it’s unattractive in it’s presentation even though it is a super juiced scan.

Of course, there are many things to consider beyond cover presentation  - such as back covers, hidden defects, etc – but on face value - I prefer my book over the others.  I’m not saying my copy is the best – beauty is in the eyes of the beholder - I'm saying it is the book I prefer.  My copy – the 8.0 to your left – really pops and while it is not perfectly centered either - it is closer to ideal.  

Cover the CGC labels … which book do you prefer based on cover presentation?   As people often say, "Look at the book as well as the label."

Yes, especially since you can't truly grade a book just from a scan, as opposed to having the actual book in hand.  Still, always best to buy the book, as oppsed to buying the label like what a lot of the OCD FOMO driven buyers seem to do nowadays.

Surprised that they haven't had a higher graded copy after all this time, since this Promise Copy here is the highest graded copy at CGC 8.5.  Not sure what happened with that top staple area or the wear at the bottom of the spine, but I guess it is what it is, although I have certainly seen better presenting CGC 8.5 graded books from a strict visual point of view.

Hey Peter - I appreciate your thoughts.  Let me clarify - I wasn't implying FF4 is unknown or a sleeper in the sense that nobody knew about it. 

Our topic here isn't "Books that are unknown or Diamonds in the rough" - it is "SA Comics That Are Heating Up" - and FF4 just heated up more than it has in the last two years and for that matter maybe ever.  In the past 7 days it doubled in price .... the book that sold on ebay doubled the previous record high ... it didn't go up 10 or 20 percent - it didn't go up 50 percent.  It went up 100%  And I don't think that price is an aberration - but quite possibly a bargain considering Namor is Marvel's first hero and first mutant. 

FF4 on gocollect has been moving up sure - but nothing like what just happened ... Gocollect still has the price of a 6.5 at $5700  - and I don't even see the ebay sale yet.   If this book hasn't been sleeping it has certaionly been resting comparatively to what it did this week ... 

2 years ago (730 days) - $4,400     1 year ago (365 days) - $4,700      6 months ago (180 days) - $5,250       30 days ago -  $7,000     and       Today -  $12,000

In the past two years the book went up in price $2600.   This week - just this week - it went up in price $5000

You may feel FF4 has been warm or hot or already popped  - but I am saying this week FF4 announced to the world - I'm heating up!

Pardon me if someone has already mentioned Fantastic Four #4, but the ebay sale this week was eye popping. 

A CGC 6.5 copy of FF4 just sold on ebay for $12,000  - about double the previous high in that grade. This particular copy presents nicely for the grade, but it is not remarkable in appearance nor does it have white pages.  This is again a very strong price for this book and this copy ... Here's a link -

In case you don't know ... it features the first silver age appearane of Namor the Sub-Mariner.  Namor is Marvel/Timely's first hero (April 1939 in Motion Picture Funnies Weekly and then again in Marvel Comics #1 October 1939).  For all you X fans - the Sub-Mariner is the first mutant and he makes his first appearance of the silver age in Fantastic Four #4.

FF4 has always been a key book  - but still a bit of a sleeper - well the cat is out of the bag.  FF4 is heating up and has a long way left to run. As a 1962 Marvel it is also rather scarce comparatively.   For example there are 5 times as many graded FF 52's as there are FF4's - and for my money before the dust settles - Namor will reign supreme - Imperious Rex!

kmik - FF4 is starting to move now ... The 5.5 copy sold tonight for $5403 on comiclink which is a new record high and the 9.0 sold for it's second highest ever at $15,178.  

The X books are hot and FF4 is in addition to everything else a hidden X book that is starting to move.   The Sub-Mariner is Marvels' FIRST MUTANT.   Namor possesses among other abilities the mutant ability of flight.  Subby's golden age appearances are well ... golden, but his appearance in FF4 is ever so sweet.  I could smell the smoke coming off it in tonight's auction.  There are so many things to drive the FF4 price up.  It is a 1962 Marvel and of course Subby is one of Marvel/Timely's original big 3 (HT, SM, and CA) from the golden age.   When Namor - finally appears on the big screen and comes into the public consciousness - whoa nelly, the price will jump!  

Of interest ... In FF Annual #1 July 1963 Namor is referred to as  "possibly the first known mutant" and later in X-Men 6 when Professor X and Magneto hear of a powerful new mutant - it's Namor and they both see his value for their respective causes.  Namor eventually joins the X-Men in Uncanny X-Men #513

Hey KCO - that $5200 a point value is based on just one sale - the 1.5 copy on the previous page.  To be fair the page before in this thread referenced a 3.0 copy that sold for $9550 - which would be $3200 a point ... that's quite a difference.

As I said in my initial comment, "Pricing seems to be all over the place at the moment - from a little less than $4,000 a point to around $6 thousand a point."

Personally, If I had a 2.0 copy myself, I wouldn't want to sell it for less than the 1.5 which sold for $7800.  I also tend to be conservative in my thinking - so just for the sake of shooting the breeze $8,000 is more realistic than $10,400 at this moment ... but we'll have a lot better idea after the comiclink auction tonight.  The auction will give us 4 new data points, and since the books are setting up to establish new market highs in a wide range of grades. - that bodes well for your copy being worth more rather than less.

Darthbryan as you noted - Giant Size X1 - is also on the move - along with X94 I might add.  These books also indicate the revaluation of the X books is underway and now the question is where if anywhere is there an X book that still has crazy upside?

Just another X book to watch...

StarkEnterprises - You asked what your book is worth - I'm not sure  - the market is transitioning even as I type, but you can certainly get an idea from the two sales listed on the previous page.  The 1.5 went for $7800 - which translates to about $5,200 per grade point (1.5 x $5200 = $7800).  The price transition is real since gocollect estimates the value of a 1.5 at $4900.  Clearly the market is changing right now - creating some relative bargains as some weak hands - eager hands - flipper hands - old timers cashing out will jump to soon or fail to respond ot the changing market - perhaps thinking the book will fall back in price or having reached their own personal pricing goals.  

This makes it a challenge to know what the market is for an X-men 1 at the moment and what  X1 will sell for - once the dust settles?  

There is a 6.5 copy for $40K right now on the boards and there is a 6.0 copy on ebay for 40k also a 6.5 copy for 35k.  The price variations on grade reflect the price transition.

There is also on ebay a 5.5 copy for $23,500 (about $5200 a point) and a 4.0 copy for the same price? What's up with that ... again I say price transition.

There is also a 4.5 copy on ebay for 16 which is less than 4 thousand a point.

Pricing seems to be all over the place from a little less than $4,000 a point to around $6 thousand a point  at the moment. 

I'm watching the 6.0 copy in the comiclink auction which is still at $17k with a day to go.  That's currently less than $3000 a point, it will of course hammer down for a much higher price - but at the moment it is a veritable bargain.

For comparisions sake Gocollect values Amazing Fantasy 15 at around $10k or $60k for a 6.0  - -

If X1 runs to $8k a point - that would be $48k for a 6.0 copy.  Quite a bit less than than a Fantasy 15 - but certainly higher than current prices. 

What is the price of an X1 now anyway and what will it be when the dust settles?  Anybody else care to chime in?

Thanks for your thoughts AoD - I've never sold a comic book for $40,000 - so I I didn't think of what you suggested.  But now that you mention it - I guess I wouldn't deposit it in one transaction ... BUT .... upon further thought it's actually quite possibel that Rick doesn't give her cash, but gives her a cashiers check.  Then what?  And is that the way to sell big books for cash only and make multilple bank deposits?

When she sold that book - Rick acts like it's $40,000 cash ... but is it?  Is there any kind of withholding tax on that?  Does she just walk out with $40k?  And if she does walk out with 40k - does she then have some kind of tax liability?  What does she really get on that sale?  And how does she put that much money in CASH according to Rick into her bank without raising all sorts of red flags - because I thought banks flagged any amount above 10K?  I'm really asking by the way -- can you just walk in and sell a book for that kind of money and that be the end  of it?  And if not - what can she reasoably keep on the sale?  If you have an understanding of this I'd love to learn.  Personally - I'd like to think she could keep the 40k - but maybe not - or there maybe a way, but what would it be?

Could someone please tell me if Phantom Lady 17 is in the Overstreet Top 100 Golden Age Books this year?  If so ... what is her rank?

Bat 11 along with Detective 62 ... the cover is part of the content, and a matter of great historical consideration and controversy.  

What was the first Joker Cover - was it Detective Comics 40 or 62 or Batman 11?

I think... Tec 62 is the first Joker cover - even though the Tec 40 cover is an altered panel from the second Joker story in Batman 1.   DC did not intend for the cover of Tec 40 to represent the Joker ... they used a Clayface story in place of the Joker story intended for Tec 40 AND CHANGED (recolored) the intended Joker panel from Batman 1 to match the appearance of Clayface.

IN OTHER WORDS, Tec 40 was intended by DC to be Clayface.  TEC 40's cover image may have started out as a JOKER story panel in Bat 1 - but it became a A POORLY RENDERED CLAYFACE that was based on WHAT WAS the Joker from Bat 1 - but it is ultimately NOT the Joker.

The Joker story in Bat 1 was intended for Detective 40, but it got used in Batman 1 instead and what WAS a Joker image from the story in Batman 1 - BECAME a poorly reworked/recolored image of Clayface on the cover of Detective 40.

In terms of the Miss Fury #2, I have always thought that cover was the best in the entire run due to it appealing combination of bright colors set against the full moon.  

You can check on all of the realized prices if you simply go back to the auction notices that was sent out on a daily basis a couple of weeks ago for the various sessions.  Of course, that's assuming that you have subscribed to receive all of the "junk email" from Metro and CC.  

BTW:  Did anybody else get Set 1/2 for Session 4 from them since I seem to be missing that one from my inbox?  

Thanks for the info lou_fine and I agree with you on the Miss Fury 2 ... it is a stunner.  It has the Suspense 3 feel and is by far the best book in the run and a rare early Timely heroine.  On top of that the book in the auction at 7.0 was one of the highest graded copies.   With Good Girl books as hot as they are ... it's hard to believe Miss Fury 2 is flying under the radar, but at 2 grand ... I can safely say it is.  Disclaimer - I have nothing to do with that copy ... I just think it was the hidden jewel in the auction.  If somebody bought that on the boards at 2 grand ... way to go!

Did anybody get the price on the Miss Fury #2 in 7.0 that sold in the auction tonight?  

Also the GCE 12 in the post above … did it sell in this auction also and at what price? 

Is there a way to look at items after a comicconnect auction and see what they sold for?

I'm going to Mega Con this week and vintage comics are my thing.  I'm not into cosplay or artists or celebrities - just vintage comics ... and looking at the retailers it seems like there will be many comic vendors in Orlando.  I compared the retailer list of Mega Con to Heroes Con in Charlotte and at a glance it appears most of the same vintage comic dealers at Orlando will also be in Charlotte. 

Nevertheless..."Golden Memories from New York" just posted on the Charlotte Con thread that they heard Charlotte was the best show in the south for comics.  Which it may be?  But if most of the same major dealers will be at both shows - aren't both shows pretty much the same?  Opinions?

PS Hmmm - as I looked closer it appears Bedrock Comics and Golden Memories won't be at Orlando...so that is a difference.  Can others point out other differences that I'm missing to favor one show over the other for vintage comics?

Both are great examples of their respective genres and artists (Kamen/Kirby).  I would equally desire both on the basis of subject matter ... but for me it's a no brainer when it comes to these two copies.  The Blue Beetle is a high grade, blue label copy, with ow pages!  I'd take this Blue Beetle 52 - all day long over the mid-grade, purple label, mid-grade Cap.  For what it's worth I believe there is a lot more investment potential for the Blue Beetle at least in the near term.  Caps have been price pushed for years - while this Blue Beetle 52 has been and still is to some degree an under the radar book - even though it's cover rivals the 54 as the best in the run.  IMHO and of course always buy what you like.

I will just straight up take the Daredevil #2 and the Daredevil #7 (copy #1) ...  BUT here's the thing they have to be a set ... it's both or none that is.

If this doesn't fly for you ... that's cool and I understand that you are going with the other offer on the #7 by itself.
