I had a very pleasant five figure comic book purchase from Isaac that went very well. He’s definitely a nice professional to do business with.

The same can be said for The Pink Panther, a much longer run than Underdog.
Here’s a #1 coming up in a heritage auction and it looks like quite a few others from the set run:

I've considered it but for me it comes down to too expensive and too hard to find in high grade. Besides, the real time to collect these was 25/30+ years ago when nobody cared about them. That train has left the station.
I’d actually say cheap and of medium effort.
I used to think like you about 10 years ago and I’m not saying the set is super easy to put together, I don’t think it’s really that hard either just takes a bit of time. But then if you can complete it really does give you a nice sense of accomplishment. As for prices I still think these are some of the cheapest, books out there given their popularity of the characters. It will be interesting to see what the Scooby Doo movies do to add interest if they do a few of them over the next 5-6 years too.

That brings up a question I’ve wondered about: when putting together a run of comics published by Western, does the run have to be all Gold Key or all Whitman imprints in order to “count” as a run or can it be a mix? Does the registers differentiate between the two?
Yes for the registry either the western or gold key copy is valid. I’ve also never really noticed a price difference between the two but the westerns are more rare.

That 4 is stunning - are you looking to upgrade any of them or are you done?
Thanks, the #16 was my last one and I settled for the 6.0 after 10 years of looking with no better luck, so I’d love to upgrade that one especially and then the few I have less than 9.0 in the set.
I feel this is a set that couldn’t be rivaled in under a decade of work, but would love to make it even better any chance I can get!- Legion of Goom and Off Panel

I would love an upgrade to any and all of these, let me know if you have anything!

Well it took me a decade but I finally finished off the run of the Scooby Doo gold key comics set on the registry.
I hope you enjoy the run as much as I did collecting them. Scooby is clearly my favorite cartoon and the comic books are fun to chase down!

What do you think about Under Dog #1? Better than Scooby doo?

-
Anything? I’m interested if for sale.
-
I still haven’t found any more, anyone else have a new one?
-
Looks like Scooby jumped to 7 on the top 25 Bronze Age list, good call predicting it as a sleeper!

Some pretty good deals, thanks!

Yeah, this point seems to keep flying over people's heads, and it confuses me. TMNT were a comic property that was translated into other media like cartoons, movies and toys. Scooby Doo is a cartoon character that had tie-in merchandise such as comics. They're not comparable.
So the topic of this post is to find the most affordable key comic book right? So let's just say some characters originated in comics, cartoons or movie properties and all origins are just fine as long as that character made it into a key comic we can compare them to see which is more affordable and "more key".
When I compare TMNT and Scooby I see Scooby #1 as clearly more affordable and as far as more key, well Scooby is certainly rarer when you compare the CGC census and the eBay raw comic availability. Does that mean it's more key, not necessarily but it certainly helps!

Appreciate the info on the above. I was just the right age to 'get' the TMNT when they 1st appeared. I purchased #1 third print from my LCS and even sent away for the t-shirt iron on image, which was awesome, and like many others, I was totally hooked, having purchased every subsequent issue through #20, and also picking up a #1 first print. The Turtles were fun, entertaining and spoke to a certain audience at the time. Once they were published at Archie and the Saturday morning cartoon appeared on TV, I lost interest. But I was completely aware of the cultural phenomena it became: pjs, puzzles, games, books, more cartoons, movies, and...wait a sec, sounds familiar. Oh, that's right, its the same bit of nostalgia I felt for Scooby Doo, who had been on TV for 15 years already, and who also had numerous books, puzzles, pj's etc published.
If you want to know which I'd rather have today, well, let me put it to you this way: I sold my TMNT #1 first print, and I am actively seeking a high grade Scooby Doo #1 (and have been for several years).
Glad to see another like minded soul has seen the light. Scooby is so under valued compared to TMNT. I grew up with both and It seems so clear Scooby is a larger global brand and his comics are so much rarer. I think in 10 years the collecting world will reward the Scooby values much more. By the way I own both so would also be pleased if both went up the same, just think Scooby is like a coiled spring in comparison.

TMNT #1 is undervalued. It is the only comic book that combines ridiculously low print run with household name status since the Golden Age, without having the artificial scarcity of current variants. AF #15 is common compared to TMNT #1. Hulk #181 is like Spawn #1 compared to TMNT #1. The fact that TMNT #1 never had more than 3,275 copies in existence puts it in the same "surviving copies" stratosphere as pre-1960s keys with bigger name recognition than every character introduced from 1942 to 1960.

If there’s one Gold Key book to own that transcends generations of avid TV watchers, merchandise buyers, and movie goers, it’s this one. I know it’s difficult to find in high grade but honestly, this blows Johnny Quest, Doctor Solar, and Magnus Robot Fighter clear out of the water. And for full disclosure, no, I do not own a copy.
For Bronze I'm going to go with Scooby Doo gold key too. It's an interesting example above of "how low" the print run on TMNT 1 is and when you compare it to the Scooby #1 it actually looks super high, but life is relative.
Total CGC graded:
Scooby- 143
TMNT- 798
Comic Copies grade 9.0 and above
Scooby- 6
TMNT- 295
Scooby looks incredibly rare compared to the "ridiculously low print run" of TMNT #1 mentioned above. There's 24 TMNT graded 9.8 and with Scooby you'd have to go all the way down to 8.0 to get a total of 28 copies graded. Now that to me is actually the ridiculously low print run.
But, how about value as the topic suggests--
TMNT- an 8.5 sold recently on eBay for $7,500
Scooby- and 8 sold recently for $2,200
So basically today you can pick up the 381st best copy of TMNT for 3.5 times greater the cost of the 28th best copy of Scooby Doo? Seems like Scooby is the slam dunk here for rarity and value??

I haven't found any others from this movies signing and variant releases. Anyone else see something I've missed?
-
Hi all Stan Lee fans, I wanted to revisit this post and see if anyone else had any variants to confirm or add? Now that there's sadly no more 1st day cover series tocollect I think this was and always will be the best and my favorite. Any other thoughts on a contender to challenge or do we all agree this is the best series?

Where did they grade out?

Scooby Doo 1 (gold key) is now 2000 in 9.2
I think it was 1500 last year. 25% jump seems pretty big
Yikes that seems really low to me actually, last year I paid $3,000 for a
Scooby 9.2. If anyone wants to unload one for $2,000 I will take all you have!
Congratulations, 2022 CGC Registry Award Winners, and forumites of the year!
