  1. Anyone gone to London Film and Comic Con today?
  2. So jealous of these rooms. I have a comic wardrobe at the moment.......but one day maybe a whole room. Lots to put up and have out, just no room for it all.
  3. I might be a little addicted to sketch covers, but when I receive something as fun as this then I remember why I am a little addicted. Just got the pic through email and getting it picked up at LSCC
  4. The aim - every series, every variant First off, this isn't my main collecting goal. I'm not completely fond of all of the variants out there. There are some I like and some which just seem utterly pointless. I guess the idea of collecting all variant covers is down to preference, some like it, some hate it. That being said, I do like the idea of completing them. As of writing this out there are DW 4th Miniseries (begins March 2016) DW 8th Miniseries DW 9th Miniseries DW 9th Year 1 (begins April 2016) DW 10th Year 1 DW 10th Year 2 DW 11th Year 1 DW 11th Year 2 DW 12th Year 1 DW 12th Year 2 DW Four Doctors Miniseries As many of these are ongoing and they only began in August 2014, it seems like a pretty easy task. However, many are American releases and being in England it's hard to get hold of them for ok prices. More often than not, even without postage they are around $40. Even those that are cheap, the postage is often higher than expected. So as it's not my main collecting goal it is going to be tricky, but as they are ongoing series and relatively cheap it should be easier than most. Below is a list of those known to me which I do not currently own and will be ticking off, and adding to the list as I go. 5. Out of interest, what is people's preference between something that is published vs. unpublished, all other things being equal? To have something original that is out in print or have something that is a complete one off with no other copies of any type out in the world?
  6. It really wasn't going well for them. As I say, I had loads of problem orders with them, however they were a good place to pick up back issues. I sill have a note on my pinboard which states that they had problems with one particular regular issue and would send it out when they got it. That was early December.
  7. Bought this as my first piece of 'published' original art. Featured as the front cover for The Who Shop Four Doctors variant
  8. I wonder if anyone knows what happened to Disposable Heroes Comics. For a while their website has been offline and so has their eBay shop? Had loads of trouble with them with wrong/incomplete orders and now I wonder if they have gone belly up.
  9. Heading back from Thought Bubble. Really great show. Did have a few comic stalls there, and my bro managed to pick up a fair few variants he wanted for a real knockdown price. I got a few sketches I wanted and right at the end of the day spotted a load of blanks for 50p each so I grabbed the lot.

  11. Has anyone ever heard anything about or been to Thought Bubble Festival in Leeds. Its on the 14th - 15th of November. I am thinking of going as there are several writers and artists I would like sigs/sketches from.
  12. I went and heard people complaining it was just a trade show. I found 5 stalls selling a good amount of comics, only two of which had a large wall of books. Others just had a maybe 10-12 long boxes max, and others less. The place was ok space wise until 11 when they let general entry in. I only really went for comic village, but there were some good vintage and figures stalls. Anyone going to Brighton Film and Comic Con on the 7-8th November?
  13. I'm going to need a SWAT team ready to mobilize, street-level maps covering all of Florida, a pot of coffee, twelve jammie dodgers and a fez. So I thought one way I could contribute, and also make a record of part of my collection was to start a journal (assuming I have done this right through the Collectors Journal). I am, as many are, a fan of Doctor Who (not sure how many people on the forum are). I've enjoyed the comics and have begun to get some artwork by the various people who have worked on the comics. To this end I have set a few rules and goals for myself: A) Where possible, meet the artist. Would be nice to converse and chat about their artwork, as well as go to conventions B) Where not possible I'll go for commissions via email. C) At the moment I am looking at getting blank comic covers sketched, but I will be thinking up a few pieces on A4. D) For a cover I ask two things: i) Which Doctor I want ii) One object/person (e.g. TARDIS, sonic screwdriver) Other than that I just say do what you feel. I like to see what comes out of it. E) I keep to the Doctors that that artist has drawn. F) I choose the Doctor of the comic for the cover (There may be more but I can't remember them. I wanted to do this because when I got my first sketch (pictured below), although it was small, I enjoyed it and found it was something I would like to collect. So here it goes, banana in hand (because bananas are good) I am off on my journey. The first one I had done on Doctor Who Comic Book Day 2015 (12th August) at Forbidden Planet in London. Paul Cornell and Neil Andrews were both signing and Neil was doing sketches. I got a couple of copies signed and then, seeing as he is the current Doctor, I asked Neil for a sketch of Peter Capaldi. At the same time it was my girlfriends birthday and she was looking around the store. Hearing of this, one of the staff suggested that Neil could do a likeness of her with the Doctor. So with that done I left the store with two sketches (one for me and one for her). To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.
  14. By Bob Layton today at MCM London (soz about the low quality pic)
  15. Since this for people from the UK, does anyone buy from Disposable Heroes? I have a few subscriptions from Forbidden Planet, and often get the odd comic from Disposable Heroes. I was thinking of changing my subscriptions to them, since Forbidden Planet charge postage. However, on 3 occasions Disposable Heroes have sent me the wrong comic. The first time was easily sorted, however, since the second (2 weeks ago) and third (Yesterday, which was ordered a while back) I haven't been able to get hold of them. I've messaged, and resorted to messaging through eBay and Facebook because I only got a reply (11 days ago) asking for my order number. Its becoming frustrating trying to get a reply.
  16. Probably a dumb question, but at what stage do graded comics appear on the census? I sent one off on the 25th June from the UK. Looks like it should be back with me in the next couple of weeks using Modern Fasttrack.
  17. I've gotten used to seeing most things on comics and understanding how and why they happen, but, apologies if this is a total newbie question, I was wondering about the actual folding of the cover. How much has the production changed? On older comics the fold always seems very rounded, whereas on moderns it is very sharp and often leaves a kind of cracking down the edge between the front and back covers on brand new and unread comics. Is this a change in how the pages are folded, the type of paper used and does it take away from the grade? I think my problem is the terminology around spine defects and whether they are production or not. It's this kind of thing http://s639.photobucket.com/user/tarndle/media/ebay002.jpg.html directly where the paper is folded and does not touch the front or back covers. (Again, apologies for the newbie-ness, just trying to get my head around terminology). Thanks
  18. I can be a bit of a sucker for the variants but it depends on how interesting and different they are. I personally collect and read Doctor Who Titan comics, so in those there are tons. However, whereas some are wildly different from others, and often pretty cool ideas (the recent Bohemian Rhapsody cover with four Doctors was a great idea) I hate the ones which are generic across multiple retailers with only a colour or figure change. Since my brother collects Amazing Spider-Man I can see the annoyance of multiples for each issue. I can understand lots for key issues, but when its a run of multiple colour and sketch variants for each issue it seems pretty boring.
  19. Hi All Have been lurking on the site for the past few days and finally got around to saying hi. I myself have never greatly been into comic books, as I was never really into Marvel or DC or indeed any of the stories out there. That was until the modern run of Doctor Who comics started up (since I am a huge fan). My brother (not on this forum) collects Marvel comics so often I am on the look out for him, which led me here after learning more about grading. Personally I am keeping my comics ungraded for now, maybe apart from one or two variants i like and would look nice in a case. Looking forward to learning a lot on this forum and will likely post from time to time (although there isn't much on my own collection here). Oh and also, my name is Phil, but for the past 9 years I have been known as Pip.
