Archie art: any fans and collectors here?
Readcomix replied to soulcage's topic in Original Comic Art
Well, post away, bro! She's core Archie! -
Thx! I really don't know the answer either, and we have long lived with the apocrypha that this book is extremely rare. While it may be more common than thought, I think rare is certainly still a fair adjective, though the Overstreet technical definition of scarce is also a possibility. I go back to my speculation that if Dell's Lobo #1 (with a 1965 print run of about 200,000) could experience returns of unopened cases from distributors, (Wikipedia quotes Dell writer of book as saying they sold maybe 10,000-15,000 copies, mostly due to distributors rejecting it), then a 1947 book could well have had a similar experience, at least in terms of proportion of books printed and shipped versus rejected by distributors.

This makes sense. Consider Dell's experience putting out Lobo almost 20 years later, in 1965. Supposedly they printed about 200,000 copies of Lobo #1 and were receiving whole cases back from distributors refusing to distribute it. Actual sales from the few who did totaled about 10-15,000, the story goes. Not hard to imagine a similar experience in 1947. I Have seen one really ratty copy offered; I recall it went on eBay a couple years ago maybe. $500 opening bid, and one bid took it, IIRC. I really wanted it but remember thinking from pix and description that it was just too deteriorated for a book I wanted to handle and keep for a good while.

It was one of those days where you're just happy to part with the cash. The two Atlas Seaboards complete my collection of that company's comics output, save for Vicki #2-4. I just hate ponying up for retooled Tippy Teens, but eventually I will. (It's a cool little slice of comics history that I have been chipping away at, at my convenience, hardly been a priority.) But both Lobos and some Matt Baker in the same deal, that makes me happy!

He has an LCS in a small town, lots of younger collectors who are into card games as well. For a while, he liked having the Spidey up as eye candy, but once the regulars got to check it out he was willing to part with it for a small stack of lower price point books that would net him as much but move faster given his crowd. Perfect circumstances to make it work out -

AND I should also point out that Patriot6, Cliff R and OdinsSecrets are responsible for this recent purchase....in a recent gold and silver sales thread, I offered one SA issue of B&V, leading immediately to the aforementioned Usual (Archie) Suspects asking if any more were coming....the answer was actually No, but rather than give it, I scoured my boxes and found a few late bronze/early copper Cheryl Blossom appearances, so I offered them. In trying to figure out how much to ask for an Everything's Archie #113, I stumbled across this, half the art from the "Archie the Barbarian" story in that issue. I really wanted page 4, but I figured what the heck. Thanks guys! (I even mean it!) -
