Thanks! I don't have too many Street and Smith books, but there's a cluster of gems out there it seems.

Always surprising how little Amazing Adventures #1 goes for these days.

 

It's a book that features the 1st Inhumans series by Kirby and the 1st Black Widow series. Early Bronze Age Marvel. The Black Widow had always been somewhat of a Villain/Hero type with this series being her 1st full fledged hero stint. All other Inhumans appearances have shot up in value, Black Widow is big time in the Marvel cinematic universe, yet you can still pick up VF/NMish raw copies of this book for 25-50 dollars if you wait around on ebay.

 

 

I agree. I am convinced it is the split image cover that keeps this book and AT #1 at shockingly low prices. We are in the age of the cover image, and the split covers are big time fail.

 

I was NEVER a fan of the split cover; the only thing worse was the onset of the barcode . . .

 

One of my favorite cover tricks though, was when the cover figure grabbed or broke the logo - what was it X-Men 56 that first did that? (the Adams cover) Later, it led to be a staple of the BA.

Isn't there a Batman or Tec cover with Blockbuster shattering the logo with a punch? Mid-silver either way. Great idea for a cross-era thread Post your broken logo covers!

Shouldn't AF15 be worth more?

That's right, mea culpa, failed to mention in my rush to post before preparing dinner. Had this book on my mind for this thread for a few days and finally had a chance to dig it out this a.m.

Mrmyst, we may all be looking for a nice one for a while ... Last I checked, which was a while ago, there were four on the census, with the highest being a 6.

There are some cool post-Plastic Man Police covers, but I've pored over Gerber and I think this is head and shoulders above the rest. I'll do the splash page after I settle the house down.

I'm puzzled too (sorry Greg). How do you get 100% of the price it would hammer for by working with a dealer? Dealers have to get their cut too... ?

Smokescreen. If I'm the buyer, I look at how much I'm putting into the book. Total spend is total spend. Yes the agent should make a cut of course but let's not pretend there's any substance to the name we give it. To be clear, I DO NOT think anyone is being disingenuous, I just find buyer's premium/seller's premium to be an irrelevant distinction.

So far, the advice I've gotten has been really sound. At this point, I'm contacting the presser in Sarasota and will take about 20-25 books there for his opinion on what is worth pressing. Then, it's over to CGC to have some of the higher dollar ones graded. I'm joining GPAnalysis for a few months and have pretty much decided that the AF15 should go to auction. Deciding on the auction house is now the issue. I don't need the money desperately at all so I have the luxury of time. If the book indeed pulls a 7.5 and I think it certainly could, it takes things to a new level. I do not believe it can pull an 8 over the simple issue of off white pages. Everything else would be good. Somehow restoring it doesn't appeal to me. It's so beautiful now.

 

The other books help pull the over all value up, particularly the spidey 129's of which there are two . The iron man 55 is excellent. Luke Cage #1, blah blah blah. The ones I hold more dear are the 84-90 journey into mystery and I will have them slabbed. The FF4 group may get slabbed but it remains to see what that costs on books of more marginal value.

 

Someone asked about the prices. I really get taken literally too much. When I said that it was a 15 cent biz, I was waxing eloquent. Much of what I bought on the newsstand was .15 cents. I got some at .20. Way back, I got some at .12. When I was a little boy, it was a dime.

One person wanted my xmen and I simply quoted Overstreet as a starter and that seemed to really put him off a bit. . If I sold off a title, I would sell the whole title that I owns. As many have said, "Don't get cherry picked"

IF the Journey Into Mystery #89 is in high grade, it may surprise you at auction as that one is tough in higher grades.

Not cheap, but cheap for what they are. All fairly tough, especially the last one. The 1970's African-American answer to Archie comics. Same guy who did those Golden Legacy comics, I think. Apochrypha has it that they had an Archie artist doing it on the side and there was pressure applied to shut it down, or somesuch.

well, I got multiple spidey129's in fact. I only have one of the iron man 55. It was an accident actually.

It's a great example of being careful at the news stand. One of the 129's has the staples set perfectly. The other has the staples set about 1/8th in up off center. That caused the spine to roll. Only one was ever read and it, once. The difference in value is not insubstantial.

 

These were not fine art contributions. It was a low ball biz.at .15 cents. I had about eight copies to choose from at the bus depot. Since at the time it never occurred to me that this kind of anal retentive stuff would go on. I was not exactly selective. At this point, maybe I wish I had been a bit more of a snot. I just took it all home and loved it to death waiting for the next first tuesday of the month. That is what it once was all about after all. When Silver surfer # 4 never showed up, we had a really bad month. ( low distribution) .

Pretty excited to posy the following book. I just got back into collecting GA and this was 1 of the books in my small want list. I'm very excited to own this. It's low grade but I know it's a tough book. Or at least I think so

Hepcat/lou_fine: are these Mars patrols a good read as well? The covers are certainly beautiful.

 

I think they hold up pretty well. They were reprinted in a TPB a few years ago.

In the same vein, I'm surprised that Invaders annual (his last comic) isn't a $50 bronze book all day in the common F/VF mid-highish grades, let alone better. But I think patience and box rummaging can still yield NM at $10 or maybe even less. It's far from his best, but it's his last, it's GA heroes in a war scene, and it's clearly signed.

 

There's a thread in General about the need or lack thereof for LCS's these days, and I think this belies the real point: the Internet lets you search for most anything, but a good, old school store owner is a comics history teacher. I learned so much over the years talking to shop owners, especially Bruce Conklin (retired, Octobercountry, New Paltz, NY) and the late Vic Bertini (Iron Vic's, Poughkeepsie, NY; no longer there).

 

OP, I think this gets at your original point. If newer collectors don't appreciate the genre's history, one's collecting passion often takes one back just as far as their personal nostalgia.

Thanks Grantley Goddard. I've been musing a LOT about the flight to keys talk that you hear in all circles these days, and I'm not sure any of the speculations commonly heard are fully explaining it. That's a different thread for sure, but not so wholly unrelated that I feel off-topic mentioning it here.
