Don't worry, those old cases crack easily. If I was you, I would clean/press it. Based on the pics, my guess is 60% chance stays 9.4, 35% chance 9.6, 5% some other grade. That would be worth the chance.

Noted.. I could send it to Joey at CFP and he could advise.

    Thanks

  2. Thanks Folks,

They are placed standing up in CGC boxes, so as of a few years ago, they were being stored properly.  Perhaps before I ended up getting CGC boxes to store them in, they cracked under improper storage and I didnt realize until a closer look.

I will send to CGC for reholder.  Not sure if sending for Clean/Press/Submission will yield a higher grade than it has now. It might come back lower.

    Appreciate all the comments.

  3. Hi Boardies

I bought this off EBay in 2016 and I just recently had a look at it. The back of the case has two cracks. The top crack starts on the left side and goes almost all the way over to the other side(1 inch short of the right edge). The bottom crack start on the right edge and also goes almost over to the left side. I don’t remember the cracks being there when I first bought it as it would raise suspicion.

Is it possible for a book to be replaced/inserted inside the case with these two cracks?

Being an old label, I believe grading was stricter back in the day. This is a 9.4. Edges look a bit soft. Overall book looks nice, spine is fine. I checked the certification, however no grader notes.

I’m certainly going to have it reholdered. What happens if I submit for reholder and it’s determined that the book is not as the grade appears on the case?

Thanks in advance for your thought and comments.

Congrats on getting the #94!  I did bid on it but I believe there were multiple bids after I bailed.  I would have taken a 9.6 if I thought I was getting a deal, but what I really want is a 9.4.  I was really hoping that I would find out who won the 9.6 and that they would have a 9.4 undercopy they'd like to sell me.  So ...  ?? lol

#84 is super tough to find above 7.0, so congrats on that one as well.  I am still looking to upgrade my 8.0 to 9.0.

Unfortunately I dont have a 9.4, only a 9.2.  The final price was certainly not a deal, but there are so very few of these available and may never go on sale again.  I remember you and I offered to buy a  #84 in 9.0 to a Heritage owner, which he quickly rejected.  Everything has a price, ours was just not high enough.  The journey continues.  Congrats on the 8.0 FF#1, sweet.

Had to share these two wins from yesterday's Heritage auction.

I just need to upgrade #94 and #103 to have #86-125 and Annual #1 in 9.4.384

Nice pic up Lou, beauties.  I was bidding on those too.  Was it you and I bidding up the #94 in live bidding?  I eventually got it after not getting the previous ones.  I also ended up getting the #84(8.0) cause it could not find a copy of it anywhere above 7.0.

I don't think the current holder will contribute to it becoming wavier.  A little wavy, a lot wavy, pressing will probably fix it either way.  If you intend to keep it, I would just leave it as is.  A comic of this value, the less you mess with it, the better, I think.

If you want to put it in a new holder, and it's already wavy, I'm not sure that makes any sense.  Your first inclination would be to have it pressed flat when it's cracked out, but then maybe it doesn't qualify for a "no evaluation" reholder because you have altered it by having it pressed.  Then it's a regrade.  You will have pressing fees with a long wait, and grading fees, shipping fees both ways.  It's not a cheap comic, so these are not low tier fees.  More money, some risk it changes grade downward, but also could go up hm

Even shipping it in to have it reholdered has risk - damage during shipping, damage during cracking out or re-encapsulation, damage during return shipping.

    Thanks all,  appreciate the advise.

  7. Hi Boardies,

Got this JIM 93 book on last comiclink auction.  The book seems to wavy inside the holder.  I have heard some discussion on these holder.  The grade date is 5/24/2016.

Will this cause long term damage to the book if I dont get it reholder? I would prefer not to touch it if there is no harm to book.

Recommendations and comments would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Warren

Misalignment is not taken into consideration when grading ... as for the whites of the back cover (showing along the spine), this is one of many books I've seen that get a White Pages designation when the cover itself is clearly off-white.  I suppose it's possible the interior pages are in fact white, but it doesn't seem right to ignore the cover when rating the color of the pages.

As for other examples of wear you might be seeing, I've found that CGC has always had a bit of a tendency toward a sliding scale based on age of the book.  There are plenty of Silver Age 9.4s and 9.6s out there with defects that I don't think would get a 9.4 or 9.6 if they were Bronze Age or Modern.

I will perhaps get this re-holder(if im willing to wait 4-6 months), and it should look a lot better in a new case.

It's a collection that was assembled in the secondary market and not a pedigree.  So CGC will not mention it on the label.  Much of the SA Marvel portion of the collection (or maybe all?) was consigned to ComicLink.  If your copy came directly from ComicLink, you can be sure it is from the Federal Hill collection.

    Very nice TOS copy!

    Understood.  Thanks very much
