  1. I think it’s fair for someone with an”NFS” on a piece up at CAF to say “I’m not really interested in selling, but if you want to make me a really good offer, go ahead. I may change my mind.” But these were being offered to me for sale. In that situation, if I ask “how much” you should tell me.
  2. Was relisted at $3,250 when it didn’t sell.
  3. https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/collector-richard-rae-to-burn-leftover-vintage-comics-art-in-predeceased-estate-sale/news-story/2c0e64d71e97f80de18a1792c878e69b "A washed-up advertising executive has produced one of his best works yet a "pre-deceased estate" sale to sell his more than $2 million art work collection. Richard Rae worked in advertising from the age of 13 until moving into politics, orchestrated advertising campaigns for both Labor, Liberals and One Nation. But in 2008 at the age of 50 his life spiralled out of control as an ugly divorce sparked an 11-year family court battle. After years of alcoholism, depression and isolation, the man who brought the first ever international comic convention to Australia is selling his collection before he dies. What doesn't sell will be burnt six hours after Mr Rae dies. The works include paintings by David Boyd, the brother of famous Australian painter Arthur, a Conan Brothers drawing by Frank Frazetta and hundreds more original pieces. He even has original Avengers, Black Panther and Spider-Man drawings, not the comics but the actual artwork."
  4. Been feeling something similar. Still collect new art that wows me. But have bern drifting back into nostalgia acquisitions lately. Onecreason for this is that I want to understand the story and context of the art that I own. So, I was buying new comics to follow their stories. That way, I’d understand the context of the art and wasn’t just buying it purely on aesthetics. But I found I just didn’t want to keep buying all those new comics and was only really reading a few of them. So I started Looking for nostalgia pieces again. Comics pages from comics I already own and remember.
  5. There was a JIM/Thor 125 page up on eBay a couple of months ago, featuring some nice action by Hercules. FWIW, to Gene's point, it was priced in the $3000-$3500 range and I don't think it sold. Now, maybe that was a bargain, but that's what happened.
  6. Welp, I tried this on another piece I was interested in. The seller refused to give me a price, so I made an offer. I thought it was within the fair range based upon HA prices for similar pieces, and he just got angry and said it was way too low and would not counter. Now, maybe it was too low - but not crazily so. And then he sold the piece to someone else without even giving me a price at which he would sell it, despite me asking politely for it twice. BTW, this wasn't a "make an offer" or "NFS on CAF type of thing. He said he had other pages of the same type (as the one he put up in the failed eBay auction), and sent me scans. I assumed he was saying they were for sale. I find it offputting that if you don't make an initial offer in their unknown target range that you would be treated like that. Why not just say what you would be willing to accept for the page? Worst that happens is that I say no. Then, we can both move on. As for going into debt, it's not really that. You are paying the piece off in installments, with no interest. But, instead of it being at a Delaer or art rep while you pay it off, you get it right away.
  7. It still has to be affordable. With favorable financing, it was.
  8. I don’t have unlimited funds. So, the offer would have allowed me to bid on something way outside of my usual price range. So, yes. That’s why a private offer doesn’t work here.
  9. Only on the initial bid. Otherwise it will only bid you up incrementally.
  10. A) I don’t know what the reserve is for certain; B) Even if I bid over the reserve as the max bid, it only goes up incrementally over the next highest bid. eBay only bid you up enough to get the high bidder. C) Why would I bid up my own bid? I still want to buy the piece for less than my max, if possible. It’s not my job to Game the system to help the seller
  11. I couldn’t. I was taking advantage of Paypal’s 24 month same as cash financing option for sales on eBay when I made my bid. That option expired right after the auction ended. Plus, making a side deal wouldn’t have qualified for the payment option in any case.
  12. I am somewhat amused, and also frustrated, with the seller of a particular comic art page on eBay. The page has been listed 4 or 5 times, and has generated really nice bids, but has never met the reserve. What happens is that the initial bid on the item is well below the reserve. And any subsequent bids - even if they are in excess of the reserve - never get there unless there are enough incremental bid increases. I think I bid in excess of the reserve as my max bid on it in one instance, but didn't win the page because I only exceeded the next highest bid incrementally, due to eBay's auction tool. In any case, the owner is leaving a lot of money on the table by putting the reserve so high. Moreover, after 4 or 5 tries at this, with the page NEVER meeting the reserve price, you'd think the seller would have figured out that he's overpricing it. But, nope. If you don't want to sell it for less than a price that nobody is willing to pay, then why keep listing it?
  13. Not how it works. If they were willing to pay the amount it sold for, they’d have bid that amount, or higher.
  14. Is it just me, or is there a TON of high quality pages on eBay right now? Way more than usual. And new stuff. Not the same old stuff that's been sitting around in some cases for years.
  15. Looks like it didn't sell, and the starting required by was $18,000. It got no offers.
  16. Just noticed that FIFTEEN PAGES, including the title Splash page, from Hulk #180 are in this auction. https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/herb-trimpe-and-jack-abel-incredible-hulk-180-lot-of-15-pages-original-art-marv/p/7209-106001.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515
  17. The Frazetta may also be driving eyeballs to this auction, so some folks may be unloading stuff now to get the most bang for their timing buck
  18. Here's a 2003 article about how Rowena was shocked and upset that Saddam had her paintings. https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xpm-2003-04-19-0304190102-story.html
  19. I am looking at this HA coming up and it seems pretty obvious that something is up. There are a ton of stellar OA pieces coming out of the woodwork all of a sudden. Are big hitters and dealers basically putting up collateral to make a play for the Frazetta? Or is there a cascading effect where the collateral itself is so desirable, that its bringing other stuff out.
  20. I believe this one was owned by Saddam Hussein. No. Not kidding. 😂
  21. For high value items, maybe use a fine art specialty shipper? e.g. (example only, not an endorsement) https://fineartshippers.com/services/insurance/
  22. I think even Da Vinci roughed out his paintings in charcoal before painting them.
