I don't think so, no. Adding any sort of identifying mark would affect the grade, unless they were low grade to begin with, in which case you could possibly identify them based on their specific defects anyway.

The closest you'd get would be the certification number if they were slabbed, but again, if someone stole them they'd be cracked out anyway.

I was thinking of  a watermark, or invisible ink of some sort...seems with the value of books these days, and the tech available to us, someone would have invented something!

  2. Curious if anyone has heard of a way to identify comics of value with some sort of Watermark or a comics related "VIN" number, similar to what is used for cars?  I have a bunch of the early Marvel first appearance books, all raw (not that it would matter much if they were cracked out of a CGC case), that I always think it would suck if someone swiped them...they would all be pretty much untraceable securities if they were taken from me.  Thought maybe someone has devised a method to identify valuable books, without harming or devaluing them?

  3. I'm wondering if the comic companies continued printing with the current paper stock, but also sold a lower priced newsprint option, if people would consider buying?  I find that my eyes get fatigued much faster reading my newer format comics.  I would definitely consider buying newsprint paper copies myself, but would others would like the idea?

  4. I am going by memory, but I recall an issue of Super Villain Team up where someone had just killed Namor's woman, and in the last panel,  was a perfectly rendered enraged Namor that was about to be unleashed on the person responsible.  The very next issue, the exact opposite was on the splash page...Namor in a very poorly rendered version of an instant later.  What a letdown.  If I can find the 2 pics, I'll load them up here, and let everyone else down too.

    From wiki:

The creature, called Swamp Thing, was originally conceived as Alec Holland mutating into a vegetable-like creature, a "muck-encrusted mockery of a man". However, under writer Alan Moore, Swamp Thing was reinvented as an elemental entity created upon the death of Alec Holland, having somehow absorbed Holland's memory and personality into itself. He is described as "a plant that thought it was Alec Holland, a plant that was trying its level best to be Alec Holland"[6] with the result that he suffered a temporary identity crisis as he tried to surrender to his plant side after the discovery that he could never be human 'again'

After reading the above, that sounds very familiar...I must have read some of those stories way back when.  In HOS 92 vs the Swamp Thing series...didn't they change the character's name or origin in some way?  Or am I thinking of Man Thing here?  I'm just trying to recall if the HOS 92 story segued right into Swamp Thing #1?  Time to buy some old Swamp Thing books, and get caught up!

Nice. What kind of stuff do you collect?

Been collecting a long time, and as a result I have most everything I wanted (within reason...still would like a Cap America #1, but that's likely not going to happen)...so these days, I just try to improve on the copies I already have, or buy newer stuff. off the rack at my LCS.  I have full runs of FF, DD, Conan, Captain America (and TOS with Cap),  Captain Marvel (Silver age).  My brother recently gave me all of his early Hulks, up to about #200 or so, so I'm thinking of filling in his Tales to Astonish gaps.

If he happens to have some silver age that you're not interested in, let me know...I definitely don't want to poach!
