  1. The obvious answer would be that he needed the cash, and the mega-keys were easier to move and for more money. But I'll bet he wishes he had hung on to a few more big ticket books.
  2. I can't imagine that that staining could be removed without some kind of chemical cleaning, which means it should have a PLOD. Is there some kind of chemical cleaning being done now that CGC isn't able to detect? That's a concern. Still, it sounds like the deal only "almost" happened because the seller was not well informed about the book's potential at auction.
  3. Wasn't that speculation on his part? I don't think the family ever told him that other comics had been taken to the dump.
  4. I miss the days when I could enjoy the interiors of comics; I used to read every comic that I bought, including high-grade Golden-Age comics. That was back when they were much less expensive. Breaking comics out of slabs is an expensive proposition these days unless you're certain that the book was graded very strictly and would get at least the same grade on a re-submission. That's without mentioning the risk of damaging a comic. Even though I've always tried to be extremely careful, I have caused wear and tear on books before. It doesn't take much—an errant sneeze or slip of the hand will do it.
  5. Someone told me that if I brighten up my comics by re-coloring the covers with magic markers, then I'll be entitled to those new new purple labels, so I might just do that.
  6. To each his own. I have a number of pedigree books that pre-date the new pedigree label, and I have no intention of re-holdering any of them. I couldn't care less what color paper was used for the label.
  7. To me, all bound volumes are trash. I don't know why anyone would pay a dollar for a bound volume of comics let alone $5,500. This is the first time I've seen such an odd assortment of comics bound together.
  8. How many points does CGC take off if the pages are stuck together? Asking for a friend.
  9. I've been meaning go get one of those newfangled rotary phones, but I'm too attached to my old crank phone.
  10. Large Claw with yellow skin to small Claw with green skin.
  11. Creep with fangs drooling blood to creep with fangs drooling saliva.
  12. Woman frightened of a creep to couple frightened of a creep.
  13. Let's see a picture! (It was the equivalent of $110 USD? Are you outside the US?)
  14. It only sold for that price because it's a single-highest-graded Four-Color, so the price doesn't mean anything with respect to the value of funny animal books in general or even other copies of this issue. Are you still collecting. Lou? I noticed that I never see you post any recent purchases.
  15. Late 1930s Everett cover to early 1950s Everett cover.
  16. Yes, but you could just cut it closer to the first numeral 1, right?
  17. Ziff-Davis Amazing Stories to Ziff-Davis Amazing Adventures.
  18. OK! I'm glad to know that it wasn't cut off by a recent restorer.
  19. I'm curious where it came from. Who cut it off of a cover? Was somebody doing major restoration on an Action one by adding pieces and figured he could cut the original "No. 1" off and just add that much more to the restored book? Are restorers going to be cutting up Action 1 covers now to be shared between multiple coverless copies so that each restored copy has part of an Action 1 cover because somebody decided that doing that is more profitable?
  20. Hmmm . . . the first person who came to mind with that description was Jeff Meyer, but I have no idea whether that's who you're talking about.
