  1. I see the failure of new newsstand sales as a separate topic from the collection of back-issue newsstands. Sellers will manipulate all they can in every market; no surprise there. The publishers have been doing that with variant covers in a successful manner. The market will decide value overall regardless of the craftiness of salesmen. I like that newsstand books were never intended to be collectibles by their makers. The failure of the newsstand comic books may actually speed up the interest in them (value to a lesser extent;) now that they are a relic of our culture. I'm of course biased as I personally find the saga of newsstand comics fascinating, and therefore have purchased many examples. I doubt I will ever see a windfall profit from selling any of my books, my kids might, lol.
  2. Ditto Here DC. It was becoming a B&N weekly ritual. Every other week I would drive twice as far to get to the nearest BAM. If I was out of town I would check out the nearest B&N for what they might have (brought my own bags/boards of course.) Some locations stocked very little. One store I visited only had 2 copies of Nightwing so I bought them. My home store had everything but Nightwing. Newsstand interest/awareness seems to be slowly growing. I'll be interested in them regardless but I would love to see more interest as a whole. I collected Marvel/DC newsstand books as an adolescent/teen in the 90's unknowingly by getting all my new books at the grocery store. I only realized years later why some of my books looked different than the others. ( I was ticked off when I thought someone had ripped off the hologram from my Sensational Spiderman #0 before I bought it) Maybe it's a nostalgia thing for me.
  3. Kirk, Thank you for amassing and documenting your Pedigree level collection of DC Newsstands. This is something I could see myself falling into. But since you already did it, I don't have to! Are you expanding into more DC titles, Marvel, Image perhaps?
  4. I'll 4th that sentiment. I posted similar question in PGM section for my Spectacular Spiderman 1. It's the opposite issue as the OP as the book looks like a 9.8 but was graded 9.6. FYI, it was graded in 2007. I looked at photos of the same issue in 9.8 slabs on eBay right now and some actually look worse than my 9.6, with color breaking spine tics. I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing this. All the more reason to look very closely before buying slabbed books. I'm not cheerleading for any other companies either, the worst looking slabbed SpecSpidey 1 9.8 i found on eBay, with multiple color breaking spine tics, was a cbcs slab. And pgx is well known to overgrade.
  5. Update: I found 3 other CGC 9.8's on eBay, with the same lower left spot of black ink missing at corner. It didn't bring those down to a 9.6. I'll hold off the wall of pictures to show them unless someone wants to see. I added a better closeup of the upper right corner. It is kind of draped over the inner pages, not folded. I will digress. Thank you all once again.
  6. Thanks for all the replies! If that bottom left corner is all it takes to go from 9.8 to 9.6 then that’s inconsistent with the vast majority of other CGC books I’ve inspected. It’s actually just missing a spot of ink, there’s no fold/crease. Appears to be made that way; no visible cause of damage. Someone mentioned the upper right corner; that’s not folded; it’s the Mylar pulling it down slightly because it overhangs the interior pages. I’m not going to get it regraded; I’ll be content believing I have the best 9.6 book out there. ? better than at least one of the 9.8’s anyways. If this book for some reason shoots up in value I’ll be seriously tempted to push my luck.
  7. A perhaps strange request, but please here me out. I bought this already slabbed a 9.6 about a year ago. I thought the centering was great (Comics Code box not cut off,) liked that it had white pages. Now I've looked this book over (through the slab anyway) and I cannot find any defects I typically see in a 9.6. I have other CGC graded books in 9.8 and 9.6 and can see a difference; this book looks like the 9.8's. There is actually a 9.8 CGC on eBay right now that appears to have small color breaking spine tics on the black portion of the cover. I put circles on these 2 pics of the 9.8 book. If I were to crack/resub and get a 9.8, this book's value essentially doubles from $100 to $200+, based on what I've seen. So I appeal to you, the experts. Am I crazy? Is there an explanation in the graders' notes?
  8. Divad, I hope you are serious, I’ll call BAM and B&N just for the possibility of DC newsstands coming back. Mr highgrade, I cherry picked these and even with that effort the range of grades is 9.2-9.8. Most are 9.4-9.6. I felt a sense of accomplishment every time I found one in 9.8 that hadn’t been mishandled by the bookstore employees already. I passed on most books for condition issues. BAM seemed to handle them the better than B&N. Many I believe could get bumps from pressing as the ticks or other typical newsstand rack damage is non-color breaking. I haven’t submitted any of these newer books. If (when ) the values start to climb for these it may be worth getting some keys graded.
  9. Glad I could help! I may have gotten a little obsessive about the DC Rebirth Newsstands. At the time I was frustrated at how many issues I couldn't find. Looking back on it I think I did OK. I have a collection of Marvel 2011-13 Newsstands too...
  10. I was getting DC Newsstand books regularly throughout 2017 through B&N and BAM up until DC cut them off I have both Batman and Superman newsstand editions up to issue 29. Both were the 2nd issues published for the month of October. I have some of the other titles, none going past last half of October 2017. So I'm thinking that was the cutoff. Below is the most recent DC newsstands I could get. Aquaman 26 9/17 Action 985 10/17 Batgirl 13 9/17 Detective 960 9/17 Hal Jordan Green Lantern CORPS 24 9/17 Green Lantern 25 8/17 Green Arrow 29 last half 10/17 Flash 28 10/17 Harley Quinn 25 10/17 Justice League 27 10/17 Nightwing 26 10/17 Justice League of America 12 10/17 Suicide Squad 23 10/17 Super Sons 7 (1/month) 10/17 Trinity 11 (1/month) 9/17 Wonder Woman 28 10/17
  11. The dust shadow on the back is real. I tried to capture it in the back cover closeup. Even an 8.5 is fantastic; I only spent $5 on this book; assuming it was a decent mid-grade silver age Marvel. Imagine my elation once I pulled it out of the scuffed up sleeve to see how nice it really is! Thank again, guys! I've never sold any of my comics (nor have i really tried.) I did however just start to get interested in grading/slabbing. I like displaying the slabbed books as art; just looks cool to me to line up the favorites and know they are protected well, and see them whenever I walk into the room. I haven't submitted any to CGC yet, I've only bought CGC books already slabbed. I have digital copies, including this one, so reading it is not a big deal. The monetary value does matter for insurance purposes and perhaps a unique inheritance for the kids if they get into comics. So here's a question: If not going the the full graded/slabbed (expensive) route, what's out there nowadays to give maximum protection for display purposes?
  12. more pics! Thanks again for the detailed explanations, you guys are great. There is a little crushing on the bottom left corner going on. Do you think it could press out significantly? Also I noticed a slight (looks like a fingernail drag mark) dent at top edge in my latest cover photo, that could also use a press. I'd be totally stoked with a 9.0! Happy with 8.5.
  13. Thanks! So that curved line near his left arm is actually from the plastic. I'm going to get a better naked cover pic later today. The plastic makes it look bad, I totally see what you are looking at. I just don't trust putting it in the scanner without plastic sleeve.
  14. PGM Silver Surfer 6 1st time submission I stumbled upon this gem at a local convention, then after checking it out at home realized its actually pretty nice, perhaps slab-worthy. I'm very curious as to what you guys think; I am very new to grading. Note: what looks like defects on mostly the black part on first scan, those are from the plastic sleeve.
