Both your achievements are great - that's a lot of books! I tried for an ASM run of 100-200 in CGC 9.4 and made the mistake of leaving 121 and 129 to the end. My thinking was, I could get 20 books for the price of either, so went for volume first. Then both books went barmy and I ended up not getting 121. Then I sold the lot. Point being, always buy the expensive key first. Then pick the others off later. But once the key goes so far,  many of us will be unable to get it. As a completist, I had every Spidey. Every one. But I couldn't cope now with all these artificially priced variants going for thousands. Sooner or later, money becomes a barrier to most but the very wealthy. I couldn't start again now unless I won the lottery. It may be a reason that the hobby is waning. Who could afford the ASM 1-700 run now?

Be happy you've got #2 upwards. Some great books there, and they will one day be on the out of reach list too.

    Thanks for your comments!

I get what you’re saying about picking up the big books first but I never thought that I would even approach where my collection is now.

I started out around 25 years ago by buying cheap originals above issue 160 and Marvel Tales and Masterworks reprints of the rest.

Then, I bought a real nice #50 (my all- time favourite comic book) for $100, by far the most I ever spent on a book to that point.

Then, around six or seven years ago I stumbled onto a beautiful 129 that I couldn’t pass up for $540. It wasn’t even on my radar but it was sooo nice and the price was “right”.

    To be continued...

  2. Last night I posted in the ASM collecting thread that I completed a run from #2 to 441. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to purchase an original #1 so I’m wondering how the community feels about the Golden Records reprint as a substitute. What about the Marvel Milestones edition which also reprints the original ads? I look forward to some thoughts and opinions.

  3. Regardless of the value of his debut issue, DD is a personal favourite of mine.  I loved Gene Colan and Romita’s short run was magnificent. DD's rogues gallery was pretty inept but Stan wrote some great stories around them. The concept of Mike Murdock was ridiculous but, again, Stan made him an enjoyable lark.

I have a nostalgic collection of issues 1-60 plus Marvel Masterworks reprints extending to issue 132, the Frank Miller Omnibus, and the Born Again TPB.

  4. I received issues 4 and 12 this week so I  now have a run of issues 2 to 441.

The Marvel Milestones reprint of ASM 1 will probably have to suffice as a filler for a while but I may pursue the Golden Records reprint sometime soon. I only have two graded books in the collection (6 is a 6.5 and 8 is a 5.5) but a slabbed 7ish GRR would look pretty darn good.

Unfortunately, the Milestones reprint of AF 15 will be the closest I ever get to that book.

  5. I’ve placed two orders with them. One for a few of the DC 80 pg giant reprints that came out around the beginning of the century. That was quite a few years ago.  The other was for several Daredevils between #s 40 and 60 during a 60% off sale. Both transactions were cheap and the books were graded accurately.

Having said that, their prices are almost always beyond ridiculous so I rarely check what they try to pass off as a website.
