Yes, I think I'd give some props to the DC books too. Some real funny stories. I think most issues of Real Screen, etc. have at least one story by Sheldon Mayer.

First appearance of Archie's Jalopy--which amazingly enough changed very little over the next 30 years.
Great covers!
Now who changed more in appearance after just a few years, Archie, the Peanuts gang, or Mike Doonesbury?

This one has a really fun Penguin story.
We just got a nice 248 with a wonderful globe-spanning story. No scan yet.

Wolverine would be as well if they hadn't relaunched the title. Although I'm sure they'll revert to the old numbering at some point (not sure if that should disqualify it from my list or not).
Those are the kinds of things that drive your friendly neighborhood back issue website crazy. How to list all the recent volumes and renumberings and dual-numberings.
Here's a non-DC book that recently joined the 150 club, which some may find surprising: Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog.I had no idea.

P.S.--is it some kind of karma thing that Percy Pig et al must die (be cancelled) to create a metaphorical spot for Uncle Scrooge #1?

for a total of 927 DC Romances out of 5,816 total Romance comics or 16%. (Thanks to Dan Stevenson Romance Comic Index for the information).
Where does one find the Dan Stevenson information? Michaelle Nolan is always referencing his work but I'm not sure where to really find the "master list," if it's available.
I know the romance list is on matt-thorn.com.
As for the titles making it to issue 150, poor Lois Lane, so close! Ditto for Warlord.
Great to have this thread back. The info on Gangbusters was terrific and I found the connection the artist felt with horses to be fascinating.

Just found this little beauty on ebay. Wish I could bid on it.
I'm with you, incredible page.

I was very happy to finally find this one. It's #23--which is hard to tell since it's got some of another book's back cover stuck to it
Super!

GI Combat 154
Wow, you guys are reminding me that most of the G.I. Combats I'm missing must be the 52-pagers. Those covers are great and unfortunately a lot of them don't look very familiar...
Well, something to hunt for.

We've talked about it on the Yahoo Big-5 list, but that cover reminds me that I just love the war stories in the snow. Especially Haunted Tank ones.

Hey guys,
New fella here. Just found this list, and I'm jumping in to say hi
Shep!
When I saw the screen name I knew it had to be someone from the Yahoo Big Five list. Glad to see you over here. You'll find a lot of action on these boards. Also, you'll find that even though a lot of the people are most interested in superhero stuff, there's a great appreciation for all comics here. Ie, you can post Kubert war art or high grade Big Five comics on regular threads and people will appreciate it.
Best,
Marc

Congratulations!! I'm happy that your quest is now complete. Kudos to Scott (FFB) and Harley for being able to find the last elusive comic!
I think Scott (especially) and Harley deserve to share a special Eisner award for services to collecting!
Congratulations to Ian.

Star Spangled War Stories 152:
*Note the similarities with US 205.
Kanigher, for one, was quoted as saying that he expected his audience to turn over every three or four years so he would often reuse themes and such. Not that it has to do with this cover per se, but that was the first thing I thought of when I saw your comment.

Great cover - one of the best of the run. Looks very HG.
I agree, that's really great. Thanks for sharing--it's nice to see it large size instead of Gerber size.
Btw, I believe Mark got his Wonder Woman 20 back.

There are several neat in-house ads in the issue. Still odd to me to advertise "Blood and Guts" and Horror titles in a Romance book . Is this the correct audience ? Anyway, here are the ads.
I always note things like that too. To me it seems to happen more in romance comics than in others. I don't know if we see gruesome horror ads in "kid's comics" (ie, funny animal, etc.) but it seems that it's more common to see ads for a Tommygun toy or "boys' comics" in a romance comic. Other ads that strike me as funny are ones for adult type things like arch support inserts or bookkeeping courses.
Btw, thanks for that I.N.D.U.C.K.S. link. Didn't know about that site. Of course I'm so Barks-focused the rest of the Disneys are a bit blurry to me.

That's the basics. I'm interested in hearing the details.
Nice memory! I figured there was a little more to the deal "cough" than just the inventory transfer.
And this is circa?

So while we're waiting, how about some quick background? So Gerry Ross was offering some kind of big package deal, along with advice? Was this advertised in CBG and Overstreet, kind of like the Koch and/or Dolgoff big package deals?
I, too, am looking forward to hearing how it turned out!

Nice job on the the D's, Scrooge!
Great writeups. You find something of interest to say about even the pedestrian issues.

I've never read Tillie, but Tessie (as well as most of the other Timely titles) is pretty good. The real problem with My Friend Irma (and later My Girl Pearl) is that the only joke is that Irma is amazingly stupid. And it's repeated over and over and over and...you get the idea. The other Timely titles are much more readable.
Thanks, I will endeavor to keep Tillie and Tessie separate in my mind! The Tillie was just very uninspired. I generally like teen-type stuff. (And we are absolutely nuts about Katy Keene over here.)

This title featured some of Dan DeCarlo's best work, but was virtually unreadable
Speaking of unreadable, I took a look at a Tillie the Toiler (FC 176) on Friday and found it tough going. Am I off base or are they lame? Is Tessie the Typist better? I always think of those two in the same group.
Best,

Yow, what a post, what a thread! Thanks for sharing.

I'm not a big fan of Biro as an artist, but I do think he has an fairly unusual knack of telling an entire story in a single image, like this cover to CDNP. It doesn't hurt either that I love the coloring!
I was struck by that cover in particular too. I always get a kick out of the CDNP covers--busy and fun. You'll get something like the arriving cops saying "We've got the xxx gang now!" while the one gang of crooks are saying, "Look out!" and the other gang is saying "Haha!" as they set a runaway flaming car towards the first gang.
As for the Bozo, I am amazed to see it on the thread already as it was only sent on Thursday. Kudos to Scrooge, as always.
As a child in the 70s my local tv station either had its own Bozo show or knock-off clown. I'm not sure if I was ever in the audience or not but the one thing that really stuck with me was a part every show where the selected child would try to win great prizes by tossing a ball into a bucket. The first one could be dropped straight down then the buckets went out in a line. Pretty easy to win at least four or five prizes no matter how poorly coordinated the child was. Looow budget.
The Bozo comics are fun and if Bozo ultimately gives us Krusty the Clown, all the more power to him.

Henry Darpis didn't turn up on any Yahoo! nor Google search
A rip off of Alvin Karpis?
I've read a thing or two make me doubt the accuracy of many of these "true" crime stories. Do you know anyone that's tried to look these up? Anyone?
I've had the same experience. Sometimes they appear real but you'd think there would be easily findable records online and there aren't. Like you, I have my doubts about a lot of them. I spent some time in January Googling a few "true criminals" with no success.

Surprisingly this is the first Dell we run across. It is surprising because 1) Dell is the third most frequent publisher this month and 2) I am only missing the Bozo to have all the Dells I need.
I love this thread and am happy to give you our copy of that Bozo if you want it. Since you'll be displaying these all at once I'm not sure what kind of minimum eye appeal you want. Ours has a good spine and relatively flat cover but does have three pieces out of the cover. Both right-hand corners and one annoying one near the spine. Anyway, PM me with a mailing address if you want it.
I agree with AdamStrange that your posts are well-worth saving. The other day I saw a flier for a new company that will take your blog and put it into a hardcover book. The first thing I thought of was this project. Not that it's necessarily a candidate for that treatment but just that it deserves some sort of permanence in your collection.
Back to happily lurking week after week,
Marc
Archie--The First Year: Cover Gallery
in Golden Age Comic Books
Posted
Well, Archie changed dramatically in the first couple of issues of Pep--going from a 12 year old (or so) to a mid teenager. After that he was pretty consistent for several years. So, I would have to go with Peanuts as my answer
When did the buck-teeth stop?
OT: Did you ever see the Yale Doonesbury cartoons? Unbelievable difference in the art. Did Trudeau just get good fast or is there some mystery ghost?
