  1. Secrets Behind The Comics #nn (Famous Enterprises Inc., 1947) CGC FN 6.0 White pages.

Stan Lee was only in his mid-twenties when he wrote this book, yet as it proclaims, "He has been in complete charge of more comic magazines than any other living editor." This book was advertised in Timely comics upon its publication. It has a two-color paper cover, and it's actually not a comic, though it is hand-lettered in true comic style. Smilin' Stan's text is primarily illustrated by Golden Age great, Ken Bald. The book has tons of interesting features including a profile on Syd Shores (with four pages of his Blonde Phantom reproduced); Mike Sekowsky, Basil Wolverton, Al Jaffee, and Martin Goodman are profiled as well. There is also a detailed description of how Captain America was created, accompanied by several images.

Just last year, Heritage recorded a sale of $7,800 or nearly 4x guide for a CGC 9.0 copy! Well, no worries about that because here is a mid-grade affordable copy!!! Prices are kinda all over the place for this book. For those who know what it is, bidding can take it to multiples of Guide. Sometimes one can be lucky to find one for less because many people don't recognize the significance. 2023 OSPG 6.0 value is $444.00.

It is a really cool piece of comic book history.

    $500.00

I could use a better picture....  :baiting:

Such an awesome title covered by the two best artists from DC's golden age!  O'Mealia and then Flanagan!  Where is Double Action 3?

    :cloud9: (worship)

There are rumors of a Triple Action! But don't think that one has much substance to it.

  3. I am honored to let everyone know of this new graphic novel for which I authored the introduction. This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart on several levels. My grandfather was Rabbi David Max Eichhorn, who as a U.S. Army Chaplain helped liberate Dachau Concentration Camp in April 1945 and then performed services for the survivors. And I represent whistleblowers in my day job. So, when I was asked by the writer Raphael Medoff to contribute to this historic work, I jumped at the opportunity. Dean Motter is the artist.

Copies can be purchased here: https://www.amazon.com/Whistleblowers-Fought-Expose-Holocaust-America/dp/1506737609 (FYI, I make no money on the book).

Raphael and I were interviewed by Fanboy Factor and the video can be watched here:

And if you are interested in watching us live, we will be appearing virtually on Monday, April 15, 2024, at noon EST. Registration is FREE:

    Mark,

Thanks for stopping by. I always enjoy what you have to say. But I assume you must be fairly busy these days. Keep fighting the good fights!

Just slightly! ;) Using the boards to help keep my sanity, which is not often enough! :hi:

The rabbi in question is David Max Eichhorn. He was with the Corps command and came in a day after the 45th - presumably to witness what was discovered and help out as best he could. His story is a very compelling one. He gave the first post-liberation Jewish service at Dachau and also led prayers in Nuremburg on its capture. His grandson is Esquirecomics aka Mark Zaid who has done a wonderful job of preserving his grandfather's legacy.

For those interested, here's a link to a good article on Mark's grandfather.

    Thanks for the kind words.

For those interested in my grandfather's story, particularly his time at Dachau (including amazing video of his service for the survivors), you can check out this detailed Twitter thread I created for the 75th anniversary:
