I wanted to run a theory by the group.  We know that most of the DCUs came from 20-packs, 10-packs, 2-packs, Best of '94/'95 and Superman/Batman/Robin/Green Lantern/Flash Collector Sets.  Recently, I have been asking some eBay sellers if they were the original owners and if so, do they remember how they got the book.  I asked one seller about the "secret origin" of the Detective #690 DCU that he had for sale.  Verbatim: " Any idea where this Detective Comics #690 came from?"  This was included in 12 comic straight run/lot of Detective from #681-#692.  All the other comics had the direct sales barcode.

His response was "I can tell you I subscribed to Detective Comics, so that's where they came from."

Does anyone think that by late 1995, DC was sometimes sending DC Universe copies out to direct mail subscribers?  Maybe this could account for some low print run/hard-to-find issues?

I can confirm. I was 7 years old and got Batman and Robin Adventure subscribed. I still have the #1 in that series, preserved in exactly the way a 7 year old would (horrendously). It is a DC Logo variant. When I find it I will attach. i have been trying to figure out just how rare it is lately.
