  1. Some creators feel as if their signature is some how worth more on the secondary market when slabbed by CGC. As a result, they feel they are owed a cut of whatever that additional value is so they charge more for it. Thus, if you get a book signed by JSC it's $20/book. But if you're getting it slabbed by CGC, it's $30/book for no logical reason whatsoever. To me, it's ridiculous that CGC even acknowledges and supports this sort of behavior. At SDCC last year, I had a facilitator help me get the ASM covers. He picked up the books, had them signed, and walked back to the CGC table. CGC asked for a slip of paper indicating that I had paid the "CGC rate". Not having one, they walked my facilitator back to JSC's booth where I had to pay the $10 difference per book and was given the slip saying everything was good to go. What had changed between my books in the time I had left JSC's booth, went to CGC, and came back that would warrant the extra $10? What did JSC do in that time, that somehow made my books "worth more"? Absolutely nothing. It's a scam if we're honest. And as a result, I have no intention of buying another signed book by JSC.
  2. Like it did with Black Panther when it boosted theater counts, it could attempt to do this again. But we shall see if it will bother since both are Disney properties now. I forget who mentioned it here in this thread, but I feel like earlier someone theorized that it was actually in Disney's best interest that Avatar remain the #1 grossing film in order to increase/maintain interest in the franchise for when the sequels come out.
  3. If it's like SDCC last year, he'll have some virgin cover variants along with a cover E. Gotta make as much money as he can. It's $30 if you are submitting to CGC. $20 if you're not.
  4. Told myself I would let fate decide whether or not I purchased this set. If I woke up before they went on sale, I'd get a copy. But now I'm seeing $115 for the set of 4. Too rich for my blood. Good luck to whoever's getting them.
  5. Don't even get me started on the old fogies from 2009. "Back in my day we had to walk to the comic book store in the snow!" And then there are those upstarts from 2017. What a buncha smart-gluteous-maximus'.
  6. I like Brie as a person, she's got this friendly, bubbly personality that plays well on the press tour. But I think everything you said is an exaggeration. She is by no means "of vital importance" to the franchise. They didn't NEED her movie to be a worldwide success. It's not like the very fabric of the MCU was riding on the success or failure of her movie. They HOPED her movie would be a worldwide success. What they NEEDED was for Endgame to be a worldwide success, because if it was an absolute failure, then 10 years of quality filmmaking would have all been for naught. I assume she'll take a lead role in whatever the next phase of movies, largely because they've pushed her real hard in the comics. Whereas DC has Wonder Woman at the forefront of their Big 3, Marvel doesn't really have a female lead with the same established history or popularity. All this stuff about her bearing the namesake of the company or this or that, it's all pomp and circumstance. I really hope her next movie is better than her origin. I hope that her character is fleshed out. I'm not being down on Captain Marvel, I just think it's better to temper one's expectations on the promise of the character.
  7. I actually like this homage cover. I have no interest in the Black Cat series itself, but as far as artwork to pay homage to, this was a good choice.
  8. Here's the stand I was referring to. There's a way to request UV protection, but it's not showing up in the "Material Type" drop down. https://cgagrading.com/OnlineStore/AcrylicDisplayCaseStandforCGCGradedComicBooks.html Here's the wall mount variety, which does offer UV protection acrylic. https://cgagrading.com/OnlineStore/AcrylicDisplayCaseWallHangerforCGCGradedComicBooks.html There's also this frame as well: https://www.amazon.com/Economy-Graded-Comic-Resistant-Acrylic/dp/B01MYOHHQ6/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=graded+comic+book+frame&qid=1557457004&s=home-garden&sr=1-3 For sturdier wall mounts, I think your local art supply store (for me that's the chain Michael's) will have a variety of solutions to put your mind at ease.
  9. The thicker case provides a sense of security. I also think they tend to be sturdier as a result which means I can feel a littler more secure when handling the books. For example, I get nervous just handling minor keys in mylites at cons that in my head I think 'what would happen if someone was less thoughtful'. I mean, sure, there's that shaking syndrome where books get shaken up in slabs, or you could drop it and crack the case (and more), but those will be an issue no matter what protection you choose to use. All things being equal, I don't have to worry about someone looking at a slabbed book, whereas a part of me worries that someone might be gripping the sides of the mylite/topholder too tight causing a slight crease. The chances are small, but I'd still prefer the more secure option.
  10. Actually, I assumed there had to be some sort of archive department that is used for historical references, whether they be used in comic stories, or as material for MCU writers/producers/directors. I can't imagine comic writers having to know the full breadth of knowledge of a characters background without there being someone in the background assisting with that. I can't help but think back to one of the Tom King Batman issues where he flashes back to moments between Bruce and Selina and in some instances practically uses the same words verbatim. I mean, maybe he remembered those moments from his own collection and referred back to digital copies. Or maybe someone helped him.
  11. I forget in which thread it was, but there was a user who has a CGC stand that is UV protected. There are similar UV protected frames that can be mounted as well.
  12. Now I remember why I barely passed chemistry.
  13. Absolutely not. The final authority SHOULD be the publisher.
  14. This is the thing that surprised me the most. I remember enjoying his artwork on his short run on Spider-Man, but can't say i've enjoyed his work beyond that. His fame as a creator seems more to do with luck and timing. That he left to co-create Image at a time when other big names of the era were as well had less to do with artistic talent, and more to do with being in "a boys club" of creators who all left Marvel around the same time. I mean, that should have no impact on who he might be as a collector (to which I don't know if he's a serious collector or not), but it does diminish the opinion I have of his words somewhat. To a greater extent was the large number of respondents to his tweet who also seemed to fail to understand the benefits of CGC slabbing. I'm sorry, but I have no intention of opening my copy of Fantastic Four #48. On the contrary, I want to protect it as best I can, and a slab will do a better job than mylite2's and a top-loader. If I want to read it, there are a multitude of reprints available. I just marvel at the confidence of some of the people that responded treating slabbing as some sort of farce.
  15. The only common thing about "common sense", is that it's uncommon. Define...lynchpin...
  16. I've heard it's a gorgeous land. Having seen what they could do with TokyoSea and Cars Land, I have to believe it's an extremely immersive experience. And by the looks of it, the animatronics now are nearly seamless. Is Flight of Passage basically a next gen Soarin' California/World? (That is, a giant IMAX screen with seats that move to simulate flight?) So they are doing a decent job monetizing the franchise then. I guess I just wondered what it would be like for a film that is 15 years old and whether kids who weren't born when the film first came out are as enamored by the characters the way we are with comic book heroes.
  17. You're right. Even in the short time I've been on the boards, I've seen a fair share of less discussed topics get pushed off the front page. And considering the boards have been around for 15+ years (??) i'm sure a lot of stuff's been brought up on numerous occasions. Apologies if it gets brought up a lot. It was just the first time that I've seen a creator so publicly come out against slabbing that it seemed interesting.
  18. Right off the bat, this isn't another one of SWAMI's threads, so I'm gonna apologize in advance for anyone that got their hopes up. But the subject title seemed fitting and I'm not exactly opposed to a little bit of satire. (Though, if my post is the serious one, and his is the comedic one...then what's the opposite of satire?) That all being said, I saw this tweet from Larsen. More surprising to me was the large number of respondents who agreed and took his side on the discussion. I think it just goes to show how much of a niche following there really is for CGC graded books, even amongst comic collectors. I realize this board will obviously veer on the other end of the spectrum, but i'm curious to know peoples thoughts on both creator opinions as well as the opinions of other non-CGC collectors. The primary excuse that books are meant to be read seems to fall flat in this day and age where many books can be read digitally.
  19. I feel like that last half billion is gonna be really tough to get.
  20. Well, that photo explains why Hemsworth looked so dour in that scene. He'd been working out intensely for months and the crew was there BBQ'ing on the side.
  21. What do you mean? Spider-Man never takes the helm of anything. As a hero, he always has the most potential, we just never see that in the comics. That's why there are issues of future characters that allude to Spider-Man being the best hero of them all, or Cap saying it at one point to boost his spirit. But the Spider-Man we, the readers see, is always a little unsure and rarely in a position of command. Wouldn't it make the most sense logically for Sam to take over? I mean...he's Captain America.
  22. CGC doesn't deal with COA's. If he wants, he can request creator submission forms. In that scenario, he does the blank cover sketch, fills out the creator submission form, and then sends the book/form directly to CGC for grading/encapsulation. This way, his customers will be able to get their blank covers in a yellow CGC label.
  23. I just got sick of the cyclical nature of the story. Find a good place to live. Bad humans come to destroy it. Rinse and repeat. That and the realization that the show could go on forever because there's no end in sight for the zombie apocalypse and i just realized that it wasn't my cup of tea anymore.
  24. I'm confused by the Tyrion/Targaryen rumors. Tyrion shares the same mother with Cersei right since she died giving birth to him and that's why Cersei hates him. Is he not Tywin's son?
