  1. Ah, but there still is some blood in his mouth... I don't think this is a case of self-censorship, but rather just a (hastily made) artistic choice. It seems that all of the many covers that Charlton reused were recolored, generally with little regard for the original color scheme. The reprints are usually brighter and more garish; the originals seem subdued and sometimes a bit murky by comparison. On this reprint I miss the eerie green glow around the hanging lantern, but I don't miss the blood spots so much. Still, I'm leaning toward the original here, where in some cases I actually prefer the more garish reprinted covers.
  2. Battle was the only Atlas war title to survive the "implosion" of late '57, though I'm pretty sure it just ran on unused inventory stories from that point until early '59. Kirby came along to give the series a shot in the arm starting with issue 64, but the title must not have performed to expectations, as it was cancelled with issue 70. I suppose Stan and Jack couldn't ignore the success of DC's war stable, though, and got back into action with Sgt. Fury in '63, this time purely in the Mighty Marvel mode. Edit: I just remembered that Marines in Battle and Navy Combat both lasted into 1958 (post-implosion), presumably to burn off inventory stories which were particular to those branches of service.
  3. Thanks for the Allen Bellman interview/splash gallery link, as he was completely off my radar. His style was a bit crude, but it has an energetic quality not unlike early Krigstein in spots. I dug out my copy of Crypt of Shadows 11, which reprints the story "Vampire Brats," a nice little 4-pager drawn by Bellman. Anyway, this thread is good stuff, keep it up!
  4. Three of these I know appeared in the squarebound books Jon referred to (He mentions 6 issues, but I only remember 5). The publishing history of those books is a tale in itself. The series was originally titled Overstreet's Advanced Collector, then switched to Overstreet's Golden Age Quarterly for issue 2; the remainder were titled Gold & Silver, Overstreet's Comic Book Quarterly. #1 contains the 'Wow, What a Magazine!' article, apparently a reprint. #3 has a piece by Jon on the ultra-obscure Famous Comics from '34-'35 #4 has the Space Western article. #5 has the Clock article, plus the Short-Lived Titles piece focusing on Whirlwind Comics. I don't have #2, that may be where the Miracle article appeared. Hope this helps.
  5. Ah, good one! But there is another Fawcett/Charlton romance title that fits the bill: Sweethearts
  6. One more: Girls' Love Stories The early publishing history of Casper, the Friendly Ghost is a bit convoluted, so I don't know if you're counting that one or not. Several DC war titles (plus eventual DC acquisition, G.I. Combat) are close, but no cigar. Another honorable mention might be Fightin' Marines, which had an early two-year hiatus (after the St. John run), but proved to be one of Charlton's, uh, warhorses.
  7. Here are a few: Superman Tomahawk House of Mystery Strange Adventures Tarzan Tom and Jerry Kid Colt, Outlaw was on hiatus for about a year-and-a-half, so I suppose it's disqualified. Deserves an honorable mention, though.
