I'm not sure what the print run numbers are on the Director's cut vs the standard cover (87,991 was supposedly the print numbers but not entirely sure if that includes all 3 variants or just the standard cover) but based on the cgc census, I'm pretty sure its safe to say that the director's cut is much lower in comparison. At one point, there were those who suggested that the Wizard World LA variant was limited to around 500 copies but since then, that number has been considered a bit too low. I'd image at the very most, the WWLA copies must be a couple of thousand or less but that's just a guess. As far as newsstand copies, I've only seen direct editions.

I have been opportunistically piling up 9.8's w/  5 standard covers and one WWLA. I frankly had been ignoring the Director's cuts but maybe I shouldn't have been.  :)

Can't believe a Director's copy sold for $400.00 on the gpa (not that someone couldn't "pump" the price) but Its possible. Far fewer of the director's cut on the census than the original cover so the sale would make sense. Never understood why it always under performed when compared to the regular counterpart for that same reason.

What is the story behind the Director's Cut anyway?   $400 is crazy, they usually sell for much less that the regular issue.

Also I haven't heard of any newsstand copies of this issue.   Pretty sure they exist though.  Ever seen any?

  3. Good question.

I think a big piece of the equation is demand for both the underlying issue and also demand for the newsstand variation.  General awareness that there is a newsstand also comes into play.

The Spider-Man Noir #1 newsstand is a good example of a hard to find newsstand ( from 2009) that simply has EXTREMELY low awareness and is not well documented. Even when appropriately described as a newsstand on Ebay the premium over the past year or so has been maybe 5-10% if that.

They’ll nearly always recognize them if there is something else different as well. Newsstand with different paper stock (like many Spawns). Newsstand with different cover price from the direct edition (that 9 cent FF book, the various 99 cent late 90s Marvels, several mid 90s Image titles, etc).

But it’s not automatic on random issues where the only difference is the bar code box.

OK.  I know there are several differences on the  UPC,   (says "Marvel Super Heroes" instead of "Direct Edition", and there are different UPC codes, Direct Edition version doesn't include US/CAN after the price) but not aware of any other difference such as the actual price.

Going back to this one.  60 total are in CGC census.       Looks like (328K) of the standard issue were printed .

    1:1000 puts this one at:

328  Base max assumption:   328 total issues as part of retailer incentive
    -  x   minus number of thousands of copies not part of a 1K copy lot
+ x  additional copies provided outside of the retailer incentive
