    Cool Immonen cover! ^^

Its truly is an amazing cover. Wade Von Grawbadger did a great job inking Immonen's pencil.

here is a detail photo along with my other Immonen's companion  splash page from All New X-Men issue 9 page 17 which appear to be the Marvel Zombies, but in the story, its an illusion.

You want a Wolverine page - easy

Wolverine in costume? 1/2 of above

Wolverine claws out - not hard, but only about 1/10 of above

Wolverine claws out by your favorite artist/run? (choose your flavor) 1/100 of above

Wolverine claws out by your favorite artist without a garbage panel or 2?  there might be only 5 that exist.

    Wolverine cover I wanted - J. Lee, Wolverine 27 - $41, 825 (Heritage 2012)

    Wolverine cover I got - S. Immonen, All New X-Men 16 variant - $2000+ (Fanfare Comic Art 2016)

    Total saving = $39,000+

It just seemed cheap to me in light of the KJG cover that sold at Heritage for $10K+, given that it's done on multiple boards (IIRC).  Upon further consideration, though, I think it's probably in the range of fair value - $20-25K is probably the right range IMO.  As such, I'm still not blown away that a Modern cover fetched this much - not like this was just your single character, run-of-the-mill regular sized cover.

The image size is on a single piece of board measuring 27.5 x 20.25.

I don't know how big the piece is underneath the frame.

Wasn't that the ginormous Civil War II piece that was literally used for 8 covers? I'm not saying that it's not impressive that someone spent $20K for a piece of Modern OA, but, it's not like we're talking about a one cover done on an 11x17" board, right? I mean, a single Kim Jung Gi cover sold at Heritage for more than $10K last year. When I first heard about the $20K sale a while back, my first reaction was, "TOO CHEAP!!!" :whatthe:

    Hey Gene,

Why do you think that the  KJG's CWII piece is "too cheap" can you elaborate

    Thanks

Awesome! Hope you see something you like!

Here's something else about that guy I just mentioned. He showed me yet another piece recently. It was a Kim Jung Gi Marvel cover that he bought for $20K. It's a gorgeous cover, but...$20K!

He's not on CAF, doesn't read these boards, doesn't even know any other collectors. That may change, but for now, he's on his own, with only the podcast as his window into the hobby. He's like an alien to me, but I guess there are guys like him out there.

Believe me, my intention when I when to the Kim Jung Gi's  signing at Center Stage Gallery last summer wasn't to buy the biggest and the baddest KJG drawing I can find. On the contrary, I had a budget in mind, I was looking for a modest piece. I started out by getting a KJG hardcover sketch book like everybody else. I remember there wasn't any published pieces beside the Marvel's Civil War II cover and some Spy Games interior pages, a french hardcover comic. Everything else, was sketches from his book. I did put a down payment on a piece (picture below) that evening and was happy with my purchase. That all changed, once I got home and started watching  KJG on YouTube. I clicked on "Civil War II Covers Come to Life with Artist Kim Jung Gi!" I was in wonder and in amazement that the Marvel CW II piece a the gallery is on the Marvel Entertainment channel on YouTube.  Soon after, re-watching the YouTube clip a couple of times, that high price tag for the CW II on the gallery wall doesn't seem that high to me anymore. The context of that piece had changed. I started to see the value. This took place on the heel of the 2016 San Diego Comic Con. I realized I have to act quickly if I ever have a chance to acquired the piece. Two days later, I when back to the gallery and upgraded my original purchase to the Marvel CW II piece. I when onto my summer vacation, and I was fully content with my decision.  Six weeks later, I when to pick up the artwork and had a chat with Tina, the gallery owner, she stated that KJG and his team was at another convention and was approached by Stan Lee which he inquired about the Marvel CW II piece. I later confirmed that statement that Tina made at CTN eXpo that fall with KGJ's team.

Plus, I think KJG is a unique animal and is not wholly comparable to other modern comic artists. I know a couple of big vintage guys who have strong examples of his work, and I know the piece at Heritage was sold out of a major vintage BSD's collection. I recall one of his pieces did pretty well at a Christie's European auction within the past couple of years as well. Lots of transcendent appeal with that guy's work I think, not just limited to guys who collect modern OA. 2c

That piece is on YouTube's Marvel Entertainment Channel as a behind-the-scene featurette to celebrate Marvel's Civil War II  summer event.

below is a link to a conversation with Kim Jung Gi at CTN

  7. I just got this from Tyler Kirkham. I talked to him for quite sometime at Long Beach Comic Con last Sunday. He said he worked at Top Cow for 7 years.

He also said he worked with Michael Turner and was influenced by him. I can see that on this piece. I just like the vortex and circular motion of this piece.
