I keep thinking about 1) all the rumors about Kang in the next phase and 2) Carol's role in Avengers #200 as mother of Marcus Immortus. Kang is also the easiest way to keep the classic big gun Marvel names around in some capacity in a next phase headlined by different characters/actors. (They can be used "out of time" as needed and played by actors who aren't necessarily tied so closely to these characters' movie brands.)

Strictly from a "follow the story" perspective, do I need to see CM before Endgame? Time is tight for me the next couple weeks; if I can catch it after Endgame at a second-run theater that would be easier for me. But I think Infinity War would have been hard to follow at the outset had I not seen Thor 3 first; don't want to be in that spot.

Carol Danvers is tied to the Infinity Stones. That may play a part in Endgame. And while I think Endgame will be more Stark and Rogers story,  Carol and Scott Lang will be the two x-factors that weren’t part of the last battle that help turn the tide. Plus, all the Avengers in Endgame are not only fighting to save the universe, but each have lost something personal, whether it’s family or friends. For Endgame to have the most resonance, it’d be good to know what Carol Danvers has lost. Conclusion: I’d make time and see Captain Marvel before Endgame. Plus, that mid credits scene isn’t guaranteed to be in Endgame.

  2. Yeah, I’m holding on to my remaining high grade copy (sold my 9.0 a couple months ago, couldn’t pass on the price). Carol Danvers will be around a long time, and Disney and Marvel are just getting started with her. Not only will her importance be realized when she’s positioned as the leader of the Avengers after Endgame, but I think her sequels might be similar to Captain America’s movies in that they’ll be mini-Avengers movies, only growing her popularity. But unlike Cap America, I think we’ll also get new details of Carol’s life in upcoming movies, leaving her room to grow and develop. Now, they just need to do the same with her comic book version.

  3. Man some of you guys trying to give your review of Captain Marvel on this page sound like a handful of grumpy 40 year old white dudes. And I bet I’m not far off. Captain Marvel was awesome. I’ve seen it twice this weekend and it even improved the second time. Normal folks I’ve spoken to have really liked it. My friends and family loved it. I feel CM had more heart than typical MCU films. The found lost friendship between Carol and Maria, the comraderie between Carol and Fury, and the unexpected charm of Talos the  Skrull were all really strong. The Guardians films had heart but in a push button cartoon kind of way. In this film, Carol was a blank slate ( just like in so many of her Marvel Comics stories), so her supporting cast mates were important in drawing out the emotion for the film. Especially her best friend Maria. But we’re not given everything. I liked how the filmmakers didn’t let it ALL come rushing back to Carol. Some reviewers online complained that by the end of the film, Carol was still kind of an enigma to them. I think that was the point. Marvel Studios shouldn’t want to give away all Carol’s secrets in one sitting. In the comics, Carol Danvers had several periods where she “disappeared for a while” and in some cases, couldn’t remember what happened. She doesn’t have a continuous continuity like her other Marvel counterparts. While this may have been a weakness in her comics character, I think the filmmakers of Captain Marvel have embraced that amnesiac legacy of Carol and made it part of her character, a strength so to speak. I think in future films, we’ll get more pieces of who Carol Danvers is. Who was Mar-Vell really? Is there more to Carol’s past than just being a former Air Force pilot? What’s she been doing out in space ( just like the comics!)? I, for one, can’t wait to find out what the MCU has in store for her. In the meantime, bring on Endgame.

Rotten Tomatoes has their audience score up and this movie has a dismal 34% liked it score.  I guess Rotten Tomatoes didn't purge the bad reviews this movie was getting before the movie was even out?  Watch Rotten Tomatoes tweak this review process some more to appease the big studios.

It's getting bot reviewed by the trolls, and just review bombed in general by them, as expected. Captain Marvel is a solid movie. Ignore the trolls unless you subscribe to their poison.

Question for the people who have seen it--without being specific as to what the Skrulls morph into, do we get much good Skrull morphing CGI?

It's okay, it's what you might have seen in the trailer. It's not like a memorable thing like the T-1000 morphing In Terminator 2 or anything. It's the Skrulls themselves that are cool and Talos was awesome.

From the various reviews it sounds like as a 'villain' the Skrulls really went over strongly. That is so cool after all these decades of these characters being in TV and film limbo. I wonder if this can later on lead to the Super Skrull?

I think the implications of the way Skrulls are portrayed in Captain Marvel could lead to the Super-Skrull introduced in a future MCU film, and not necessarily as a villain.

  7. I loved Captain Marvel, and not saying that just because I'm a fan and am heavily invested in CGC graded copies of her comics and some original art. The packed theater applauded. The six people I brought with me, kids and adults, loved it. My nephew now prefers Captain Marvel over Spider-Man, he said. And Skrulls rock.

I'm still looking forward to seeing this film, though I'm still not entirely sure why they went with Brie Larson. She doesn't strike me as a very strong Ms/Captain Marvel. Maybe after seeing the movie, I'll have a better understanding as to why.

My theory (and I have a lot) is that with Captain Marvel being so overpowered, Marvel wants to juxtapose that with strong emotional vulnerability for Carol Danvers, and Brie Larson does that very well. She won an Oscar for it.

So what's Marvel's plan if the public doesn't love CM like they did Iron Man?

She's their transition plan for the next phase.

    :boo:

Whether the general public loves Carol Danvers or not, she's here to stay. My theory for future Captain Marvel films is that they will be like the Captain America sequels and be mini-Avengers movies with heavy amounts of SHIELD and Nick Fury. I think in addition to showcasing Carol Danvers life, they will also introduce other characters i.e.  I wouldn't be shocked if Logan makes his debut in a future Captain Marvel movie given her comics history with the X-Men and Alpha Flight.

So pretty much exactly what they are doing in the movies with Captain Marvel.

My biggest issue with this Captain Marvel character in the MCU is we have 10 years of movie history and now at the eleventh hour "the most powerful hero in the world" is just dropped on us.  I hated that in the comics (for example when the Sentry character was introduced in the New Avengers), and I hate that in these upcoming movies.

If you really look at what these Marvel movies do, they're always setting up for the future, for the next movie. It makes sense then, that in Endgame, while the past Avengers will be the main focus (particularly I think the current leaders in Tony Stark and Steve Rogers), it's important they also include the future leadership in Carol Danvers. As Endgame will be an ending of sorts for this chapter of Avengers, it's important to have that past and future coming together. One or both of the Iron Man Cap duo is going away, but at the end, we'll have seen the future in Carol's character. The filmmakers will ensure, contrary to fanboy fears, that Endgame is not the Captain Marvel show, but an Avengers movie.

pretty sure this is the textbook definition of "hype," isn't it? or are we all on board that since she has a major film coming out she's automatically now as popular as wolverine, or more so?

News flash: it's all about the MCU movies. And the MCU is featuring Carol Danvers as a flagship character of those movies and she'll help headline that universe for the next decade. She's a big deal. Plus, check the CGC census and you'll see there are only 7 copies listed at 9.6. MSH 13 kind of a rare book in high grade.

I was always impressed by issue #6 and it's probably my favorite of the series. In some ways it reminds me of "The City on the Edge of Forever" from the original Star Trek series.

Yes! "Worlds Without End!" is also my favorite Surfer story, and maybe my favorite Marvel Comic story ever. I first discovered it in the Fantasy Masterpieces reprints, and now have my own VF+ copy below. Great Stan Lee story that touches on global destruction and time travel. Would love to have a Signature Series copy.

I have no idea. I didn't dream mine would go that high for a character first appearance with no powers, only appearing in 5 panels!

Some people believe the movie will be huge.

A 1st appearance is a 1st appearance. Disney/Marvel is pushing for Carol Danvers to be the next flagship character for the MCU. If they're successful with that, the character will transcend her movie (whether it's big or not) into culture icon status. Powers or not, I think it's Carol who's important here, which is why MSH 13 is the book to have.

My MSH 13 CGC 9.6 is on the ComicLink November 2018 Featured Auction and is doing very well, so I've exited the club except for my coverless reading copy.

Omg! I'm tracking that! Past $12k already! Go MSH 13!

If I had 30K to spend on a comic book I would absolutely go for a mid grade AF 15. FF 48 and ST 110 are great books to own but you can purchase any silver age book when you have that much available to spend. There are so many attractive possibilities...

Yeah, I agree. Why waste time with Doc Strange or Norrin Radd when you could own a decent copy of AF 15, the most important Marvel Comic ever? You could also consider taking some of that disposable cash/credit and invest in Carol Danvers i.e. a really nice copy of MSH 13. Looks like she might be the MCU's Superman going forward. With the company's name in her title, Disney/Marvel ain't messing around with Captain Marvel.

  16. While I love the Surfer as much as anybody, I think Silver Surfer is overrated imo as a character for Marvel films, and it’s the films that drive the market price now. While he could be a guest star in a future FF movie perhaps, I don’t think he’ll ever get his own movie. He’s just not human enough (and therefore a risk for audiences to connect with) for Marvel to risk pouring millions into a solo MCU film. I also think it’ll be a while before you see the Galactus story as it’s been done and Kevin Feige doesn’t seem to like repetition in Marvel movies which is why we may never a MCU Dark Phoenix saga. Dr Strange, on the other hand, is just getting started in the MCU. That being said, I think FF 48 has more potential for relative growth at this point, has a better cover, and has always been a fan favorite collector’s item. I just wouldn’t expect a skyrocket in value.

That copy was definitely not super high grade judging from photo. Looked like a F- to me, maybe even VG+. I sold a 7.0 the other day for about $300. I think enthusiasm might be down a bit on Warlock since GOTG3 got cancelled. Time to buy?

Could be but people are willing to bet $25 - $30 to see if they mention it in the movie and it becomes a $150 book in a slab.

From the trailer and from some rumors, Captain Marvel's powers may be similar to her Binary powers. I think it will be some kind of combo of Binary powers and the Quantum Realm (perhaps even the Uni-power). But anyway, maybe that's what accounts for the Binary interest.
