  1. This image is the very first time that Byrne and Rubinstein were commissioned to draw a Phantom Stranger. How do I know? They told me when they were doing it --in 1980. It remains one of my favorites.
  2. Any information on what happened? I wonder if this is just a “one off” or the first sign of price exhaustion.
  3. Ever commission an artist who has never done the character you wanted before? Any that really pleased you? Any dogs you’d like to share? Any interesting stories to go with them? A fairly high number of mine fall within that category; not too many requests for the Phantom Stranger. So, I’ll save mine for later.
  4. He will definitely negotiate. Even the Donnelly’s will negotiate. But, Albert does know the market and what is likely to have strong demand.
  5. But that’s a direct negotiation, not a % off posted prices open for any offers, like Anthony does. I have gotten price reductions as well—in direct negotiations.
  6. Maybe not the sellers. It is certainly something that has reached this potential buyer.
  7. Given the unemployment statistics, a fair number of them may have other needs.
  8. He’s also a pretty tough negotiator.
  9. I don’t recall Albert ever having a sale.
  10. I guess those spurs have a purpose after all.
  11. If you look at those bid prices, I don’t think he will have difficulty getting paid.
  12. My world is an oyster, but I always liked clams (particularly the hairy ones).
  13. If you are trying to sell,, this is the wrong board. That would be in marketplace.
  14. Businesses of any size will refer it to their legal department. If you must send a lawyer’s letter it should be written in a way that isn’t even close to fire and brimstone, with no implicit threats of legal action unless you can back it up. I deal with this all the time; I am a lawyer. And by the way, size isn’t relevant. If anything, small has the advantage because the response is likely to be handled by a junior attorney who is told to make the problem go away instead of a meat eater who thinks he can “prove himself” by being tough. Of course, you can still run into an a- hole who tries to be tough in any event. The profession has two many of them.
  15. That is the general rule with all services donations (with mileage on your car).
  16. A lawyer’s letter will provoke a lawyer’s letter, and that is a fight you cannot win. Netflix has a lot of firepower. I am sure, they will know their is no copyright violation from which serious damages can flow and the balance of the claim is marginal. Play nice. As my father likes to say, you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
  17. This one came as part of a "package" of Phantom Stranger artwork about 3-4 years ago, and based on the other pieces' values, the price was close to $0. The pencils are by Joe Station, the inks by Marc Buckingham and it is from Dr. Fate, 2nd Series. I really liked this little run of stories with the Stranger (I have others, like the cover to issue 19, by Sean McManus) since it is so rare for the Stranger to be in a posiiton of giving joy for a change. The half splash isn't too shabby either.
  18. Other than the broker earns a commission, and a higher price rarely generates a major increase in the commission, assuming the broker even makes the sale during the exclusivity period?
  19. Let me suggest an edit to this topic: purchased within the last 5 or so years, up to $300 more or less, and published. Otherwise, people can trot out things they bought ages ago which would no longer qualify as inexpensive. Sketches don’t really belong in the same category.
  20. I wouldn’t expect that. Just a softening of prices for lesser material and cheaper commissions. When someone has a piece that they think they can get $20k for in normal times, they don’t have incentive to dump product unless they are desperate. But, a lot of the cheaper stuff has a lower upside, and artists still need income.
