there was a comment in one of the Deadline articles months ago that sounded like it was coming from someone with insider knowledge and had something to do with the structure of the deal that basically guaranteed this would be released theatrically. wasn't paying enough attention to remember exactly what was written.

Fox The much-delayed former Fox/Marvel The New Mutants is not going to Disney+ or Hulu, and remains on track for a theatrical release, now set for Aug. 28 this year. The pic’s history of release dates include April 13, 2018; Feb. 22, 2019; Aug. 2, 2019; and previously April 3 of this year. How old is New Mutants? Old Fox first dropped a trailer for the Josh Boone-directed movie at CinemaCon 2017. Even though there were rumors that New Mutants would head to Hulu pre Fox merger, Disney has remained committed to the pic’s theatrical release.

more actual #'s Andy Wong/AP Chinese authorities will allow further leisure venues, including cinemas, to gradually re-open now that the coronavirus pandemic has largely been controlled in the country, the top administrative body said on Friday. This comes after movie theaters were shuttered nationwide in January, ultimately dealing a $2.5B+ loss to the box office in just the first quarter. -

X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX directed by Simon Kinberg (11/2/18)
paperheart replied to Bosco685's topic in The Movie Forum
this never gets old The Biggest Box Office Bombs Of 2019: #1 Story Arc Deadline’s annual film revenue tournaments have celebrated the triumphs of each year’s most profitable films. For a third year in a row, we decided to look at the ones that amounted to a big swing and a miss. Here are the movies our experts said posted the worst losses of 2019. THE FILM X-Men: Dark Phoenix 20th Century Studios/Disney Total Loss: $133M 20th Century Fox As the writer and producer and creative spine of recent X-Men movies, Simon Kinberg was finally entrusted to direct his own movie after backstopping others, including Josh Trank in Fantastic Four. X-Men star Jennifer Lawrence lobbied for Kinberg. What went wrong? Some believe the eye of the studio wasn’t on a first-time director as much as would have been the case if Fox wasn’t being inhaled by Disney. Dark Phoenix was originally conceived as two films, but the studio had second thoughts. Ultimately, test audiences thumbed down endings where Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) died. And they wanted a bigger climatic ending where the heroes battle (versus the intimate finale that was released). Dark Phoenix was never intended to a be summer film, but an offseason release before Captain Marvel became Marvel’s first female superhero in a stand-alone film. There were multiple release date changes — early November became February 14 and finally June 7. The last-minute release date change occurred two days after Fox dropped the second trailer, which listed Dark Phoenix’s release date as Feb. 14, which not only confused fans, but sent a message that the movie was damaged goods. It also didn’t help that staff promoting the movie was being laid off. Kinberg fell on the sword for a film that got a CinemaScore of B- but a dreadful Rotten Tomatoes score of 23%; both were the lowest scores ever for the franchise. The future of X-Men is now in the hands of MCU boss Kevin Feige. Production cost here ballooned to $200 million, with the lowest worldwide gross ever for an X-Men film at $252.M. The end result here is a $133M loss.- 1,322 replies

on profitability, yes. even then, it was far from obvious that Lion King, with $200MM greater BO, would have lower profitability than Frozen 2. Anna & Elsa did not get the residuals that Favreau did. -
