    As Wandavision comes to a close, still no sign of Mephisto.  So for now, the hype around SS#3 was a bit overblown?   He still might pop up later either here or somewhere in phase 4.  Just not to the extent the hype suggested, not yet.    By contrast, looks like Ultron could be returning to MCU real soon, if not already (in Wandavision, which is expected to set up phase 4).

    in the short term SS 3 will drop a bit no doubt - massive hype letdown on WandaVision, but its been undervalued for a long time so definitely not down to 2020 levels.

    Good time to buy IMHO imagine what the pricing will be if Mephisto plays a major role in the MCU or is revealed in Dr Strange.

    #1 & #4 have classic covers, but no major first apps and #3 has one of the best villain first app covers in the Silver Age

    spec sales like this make no sense to me

    Mephisto hasn’t seen 1 second of screen time in the MCU

    Thanos carried a storyline over multiple MCU movies and I can get an Iron Man 55 in the same 7.5 grade for $725 (at least that is what current FMV is)

    now I know Thanos isn’t on the cover or IM 55 and that SS 3 is a bit older of a book and maybe SS is harder to get in that grade being a square-bound book but come on now, who is the bigger bad

    I continue to wonder how much of this is market manipulation

    Lots of Mephisto easter eggs in WandaVision apparently - SS 3 has been really undervalued for a long time and not many higher grade copies available for sale online in the main sites.

    That being said though, this does seem like an extreme outlier sale.

    By all means, like what you like and collect what you collect.

    The fact that you can point out some DC work that has good art, and some Marvel work that you consider "mediocre," doesn't really have much bearing on my broader point, that from a storytelling standpoint Silver Age DC material is for the most part not just bad -- it's colossally, almost unimaginably and unforgivably bad.

    Gil Kane / Nick Cardy / Infantino / Kubert / Adams weren't quality artists ?

    Regardless of your take on the storytelling quality, there are still major characters that came out of Silver Age DC - the only difference is that they haven't gotten the same exposure on the big screen as Marvel.

    I'm currently tracking a Mycomicshop auction for Hawkman #4 CGC 7.5 (white pages) with less than 2 days to go. It's at $810 right now which I think is slightly above what CGC's were going per grade level (about $100 per grade level) before the news. So, I was thinking this one would end around $750. However, a July 4 eBay sale of a CGC 7.5 went for $995 and another eBay sale of a CGC 8.5 went for $1910 just three days ago, so this one might go higher. Glad to see Zatanna getting some love!

    DC Silver Age Keys have definitely not gotten much love compared to Marvel in the past 3 years - wonder when this will change

    I’m still waiting for ASM 14 to catch/surpass ASM 3.

    Sure 3 is an “earlier” issue, but GG has more overall importance in the Marvel Universe.

    14 has closed the gap in recent years - maybe this will be the year it surpasses 3.

    3 isnt just older, it has a much lower supply (2298 vs 3861) though definitely agree that green goblin is the more significant character + early app Hulk bonus.

    I sold off all xmen 1, giant size, ff 1 2 3 5 48 etc. I think there is going to be a surge alright but not the same direction you guys are talking about.

    Even if they would happen to go up I don't think it will be as much as other investment opportunities. Some of these I will pick up again in the future xmen 1, giant size ( even though story is a bore) ff5 and 49. FF 1 2 3 even 48. I like silver surfer but he's not on cover and find story boring. 49 is better for me. I have no interest in these as far as having in my collection.

    other comic investments or different asset classes entirely ?

    These newsies are taking off, huh? Been going through my collection during the virus slow down. I have a surprising amount of them sprinkled throughout the collection.

    found the opposite with my 80s / 90s collection - probably 1 out of 10 newsies and most not in NM shape.

    wondering how this trend will play out; i've been combing sales sites for certain high grade keys and they are nowhere to be found.

    CGC's competitor posted a census (population report) for the first time yesterday.

    They did about three years of grading without specifying Direct / Newsstand, but you can isolate the most recent 3 years where there are separate Direct / Newsstand counts...

    I'm still evaluating, but generally (using 500 different comics with 45,000 total submissions), they have graded:

    1979 = 60% Newsstand (consistent for ASM #194, Iron Man #128)

    1980 = 50% Newsstand (New Teen Titans #2 is 60% Newsstand, Savage She-Hulk #1 is 40% Newsstand)

    1981 = 40% Newsstand (Avengers Annual #10 is 20% Newsstand, Daredevil #168 is 60% Newsstand)

    1982 = 25% Newsstand (Wolverine Limited #1 is 25% NS, Hulk #271 is 55% NS, GI Joe #1 is 45% NS)

    1983 = 40% Newsstand (New Mutants #1 is 20% NS, ASM #238 is 40% NS, Thor #337 is 70% NS)

    1984 = 30% Newsstand (ASM #252 is 70% NS, Secret Wars 8 is 20% NS, Teen TItans #44 is 25% NS)

    1985 = 15% Newsstand (Web of Spider-Man #1 is 10% NS, ASM #265 is 35% NS)

    1986 = 21% Newsstand (X-Factor #5 is 13% NS, X-Factor #6 is 21% NS, Punisher #1 is 30% NS)

    1987 = 24% Newsstand (X-Men #221 is 15% NS, ASM #289 is 40% NS, Batman #404 is 5% NS)

    1988 = 20% Newsstand (ASM #300 is 33% NS, Wolverine #1 is 14% NS, Hulk #340 is 19% NS)

    1989 = 16% Newsstand (X-Men #244 is 13% NS, ASM #316 is 21% NS, Wolverine #10 is 21% NS)

    1990 = 19% Newsstand (X-Men #266 is 22% NS, NM #87 is 19% NS)

    1991 = 14% Newsstand (NM #98 is 24% NS, Infinity Gauntlet #1 is 9% NS)

    1992 = 22% Newsstand (ASM #361 is 40%, Spawn #1 is 9%)

    1993 = 12% Newsstand (Batman Adventures #12 is 16%, Venom Lethal Protector #1 is 11%, Spawn #9 is 4% NS)

    1994 = 11% Newsstand

    1995 = 15% Newsstand

    1996 - 2000 = not enough data (collectively, they are 10% NS, and Deadpool #1 (1997) is also 10% NS)

    after 2000 = not specified by either grading company (unless there is also a price difference)

    I believe that these are actually "too high" as far as estimates go, because CGC's competitor offers the Newsstand label and CGC does not.  So, we should expect direct editions to be submitted "equally" (at whatever ratio) between the two companies, but we should expect newsstand editions to be submitted "much more often" to the one company that will make the notation on the label.  It might be fair to cut these Newsstand rate estimates, maybe even half of what is shown, except Spawn #9 because CGC recognizes Spawn #9 Newsstand (6% at CGC).

    Higher grades for newsstand appear to be 9.2+ and they are significantly less populated than 9.0 and below for newsstand (relative to direct editions at the same grades).

    All this is based on just a few hours of data crunching, so things may be much different/clearer if someone is reading this post long after May 1, 2020.

    wow that is awesome data and pretty much in line with the limited research I've done.

    Do you have a link to the (assuming) CBCS page ?

    I found a few very noticeable differences in supply and 1 or 2 screaming buys for CA keys.

  9. Just researched a bunch of Copper Age keys comparing the supply of Newsstands to Direct on Ebay listings and also looking at the CGC census.

    The higher end was Amazing Spider-Man 361 first Carnage with 35% Newsstands listings (35 out of 100 listings checked) and a census of 15,000.

    On the lower end was Batman 404 (2,299 census) first Modern Catwoman and Wolverine (1987) 1 (15,436) with 6% to 10% Newsstand listings.

    The average was around 20% Newsstand listings.

    Definitely seems like a noticeable supply difference.

    Sub-Mariner 1 selling well today and past few days.

    Seems to trend up every year as I remember it doing so August of 2018.

    Suby has always been a solid book and solid seller though I believe all the web rumors about him being introduced in Black Panther 2 as the main antagonist is giving it its new "spec drive"

    I just bought a copy myself (not on the bayl seeing as how I've wanted this book for years but never picked one up...

    Figure it's now or never because once there's an official announcement this issue would be beyond what I would want to spend.

    dont forget Xmen 6 - early Magneto / Brotherhood & Submariner Kirby cover 1964

    Sony’s Kraven Movie May Include Spider-Man, Will Adapt Last Hunt Story

    https://screenrant.com/sony-kraven-movie-spider-man-last-hunt/

    Richard Wenk, writer of Sony's Kraven the Hunter movie, has revealed he's currently working on the --script - and that the film could even feature Spider-Man. It seems Sony intends to draw upon the famous Kraven's Last Hunt comic book arc.

    this one has steadily gained lately it seems.
